Monday April 111 994 AlabamaNation The Doth ax Eagle 3 A By JENNIER BOWLES Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES Political ad man Ben Goddard has gone to bat for some of the top Demo cratic leaders including President Carter and the Rev Jesse Jackson But he ready to play ball when it came to President health care plan a strong supporter of Bill Clinton but that mean going to agree with every proposal that he Goddard said Goddard whose previous ads starred talking cows and a rampaging elephant is the creator of and a fictional but allegedly average American couple who form the cornerstone of a $10 million adver tising assault on the Clinton plan In a series of seven homespun TV commercials Harry and Louise lambaste the proposal while sitting around the kitchen table or lounging on the couch very effective said Sheny Bebitch Jeffe a political analyst at Claremont Graduate School the same kind of strategy of get ting people involved with characters like the Choice The ads have been effective enough to get under the skin Both he and Hillaiy Rodham Clinton have lashed out at the commercials in speeches across the country The first couple even went a step further last month playing and in a video spoof shown at the 109th Gridiron Club dinner in Washington DC put on by journal ists for the political elite The spoof ended with the tag line for by the Coalition to Scare Your Pants The spoof got a big laugh at the din ner But the real ads are serious busi ness to Goddard who spent months researching the topic after he and his tiny Malibu advertising agency were hired by the Health Insurance Associ ation of America early last year The Health Insurance Association knew about Goddard from his suc cessful battle against Proposition 166 a health reform measure supported by the California Medical Association is rare to find people quite as talented as said Chip Kahn executive vice president of the Washington DC based association a coalition of 236 insurance compa nies lot of ad people listen to researchers They get an idea and run with it Ben is not like Goddard 51 graduated from the University of Idaho in 1966 with a degree in political science and com munications Ten years later he helped create and coordinate adver tising in the Western states for Carter during his presidential campaign Health care plan targeted by ads President Clinton and first lady Hillary have been targeted i 9u GOP candidates for Alabama governor not scared of ob By JANIS MAGIN Associated Press Writer HOMEWOOD ormer Gov ob last minute entry into the Republican gubernatorial pri mary change the campaign strategies for most of the other six candidates But state Sen Ann Bedsole won dered how GOP voters would receive the former Demo crat who served as governor from 1979 83 and was defeated in two Democratic primaries after that a cute funny man who not sure really remembers real well what happened when he was Mrs Bedsole said Sat urday after James addressed a rally of the Republicans just said something about all these liberal Republican sena the Mobile senator said have a Republican senator when he was James had hinted in the past few months he would seek the gov office for a fourth time but waited until riday to qualify as a Republican candidate Up to that point polls showed that the prima ry would be a battle between Mrs Bedsole and Montgomery busi nessman Winton Blount Blount who greeted James with an arm around the shoulder at Sat a cute funny man who I'm not sure really remembers real well what happened when he was governor He just said something about all these liberal Repub lican senators IV? did have a Republican senator when he was Sen Ann Bedsole discussing ob James going to be a very interesting and exciting race good for the state of Montgomery minister Mickey Kirkland agreed saying James would attract more Democrats to the Republican primary But Kirk land said James a wealthy busi nessman from Magnolia Springs would not influence his campaign not going to change my strategy at said Kirkland pas tor of the Lighthouse Baptist Church just another million aire entering the race and still the millionaires versus the com One fifth of Alabama Legislature leaving voluntarily By The Associated Press BIRMINGHAM At least 30 of the 140 seats in the Alabama Legis lature will have new occupants next year because many members have decided not to run for re election a 21 percent turnover rate When qualifying ended riday at the Democratic and Republican party headquarters in Birmingham 22 House seats and eight Senate seats did not have incumbents cratic Party Chairman Bill Blount of Montgomery since this will be the first election using districts resulting from the 1990 census time you go through reapportionment you get a lot of new he said Also he said of these guys were elected at a very young age and are ready to do something To some extent the turnover in some legislative seats may not bring political newcomers to Montgomery In Jefferson Senate ham Lowell Barron of yffe and Michael igures of Mobile are virtu ally assured of re election because they have no primary opposition and no Republican opponents awaiting them in the Nov 8 general election Similarly on the Republican side Sens John Amari of Center Point and Jabo Waggoner of Vestavia Hills face a smooth primary ride with no Democrats looming in the fall Like some of their counterparts in the Senate at least 19 incumbent House Democrats and nine Repub licans have neither primary oppo nents nor major party foes plan ning to face them in November Democrats with an apparently ea electoral ride include veterans John Rogers George Perdue and Lewis Spratt Jr of Birmingham and Jade Ven able of Tallassee On the GOP side those now in the opposition free ranks indude Mike Hill of Columbiana Howard Sanderford and Jim Haney of Huntsville and Walter Peruy Jr of Daphne rally said the former gov ernor would not influence his cam paign which he has already been running statewide with personal appearances and television adver tisements welcome him into the Repub lican Blount said glad he made up his mind I think mon Luggage Repair WILLIAMS SHOE SHOP 204 Newton 793 7323 Algebra 677 6334 seeking another four year term In the Senate six Democrats and two Republicans are leaving their posts In the House 16 Democrats are leaving voluntarily and two more are assured of being voted out because redistricting put them in dis tricts with other incumbents our House Republicans are moving on Some of the departing incum bents are running for other offices such as Sen Ann Bedsole Mobile for governor and Sen Jim Smith Huntsville for a judgeship but others such as Sen Crum oshee Andalusia and Sen Butch Ellis Columbiana are retiring rather than run in dramati cally redesigned districts The high turnover in the Legisla ture surprise state Demo District 19 the two Democratic pri mary candidates are veteran state Reps Bobbie McDowell of Besse mer and EB McClain of Brighton The GOP did not field a candidate Similarly the Democrats did not field a candidate for Senate District 17 where the Republican field includes longtime Rep Jack Biddle of Gardendale Sen Mac Parsons Hueytown decided to vacate District 17 and run for agriculture commissioner after reapportionment made the district predominantly Republican Sen Jeff Underwood Home wood decided to run for a House seat after reapportionment made District 19 predominantly black Seven of the incumbent Democrats in the Senate including Sundra Escott Russell of Birming CELLULARONE Only One Reaches Clear Across America (Without Battery) $1 ggoo COUNTIES THROUGHOUT ALABAMA AND GEORGIA Motorola Tote Phone HOME RATED SERVICE PROVIDED IN OVER Motorola PT550 lip Phone Motorola Ultra Slim Portable $ggoo $5 Receive your calls automatically In over 500 cities Including Atlantal While quantities last Limited time otter New Cellular One service activation required with qualified rate plans Some restrictions apply Dothan 677 2355 3763 A Ross Clark Circle CELLULARONE COCA COLA LAVORS 6 pack 20 Oz 289 MILLER HIGH LIE LIGHT 6 pack 12 oz cans 265 MILLER GENUINE DRAT GENUINE DRAT LIGHT OR LITE 12 pack 12 oz cans 693 KEEBLER PRETZELS soz 99 Springtime Values fetSllSr BIG Savings in Even Aisle!
