48 DETROIT FREE PRESSTHURSDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1993 ast-food outlets become targets Man is charged in double slaying Because most fast-food restaurants do not keep large amounts of money on hand, robberies usually net at most a couple hundred dollars, a police official said. Drive-throughs hit by robberies, shooting death ETROIT Richard Brown, 20, of Detroit was charged Wednesday in the stabbing deaths of two faster getaway and minimize the chance of being identified," said Bob Trojanowicz, professor of criminal justice at Michigan State University. Unless the recent flurry of thefts continues, the open drive-through windows and their hours of operation will stay the same, operators say. "It's easier to pass the food and a lot more friendly," said Kim Ohlemacher of the Michigan Restaurant for 52 Arby's restaurants in the state. Walk-up customers are not served at drive-through windows, he said.

The new window replaced a system in which orders were delivered on trays while the window remained shut. The old system gave restaurants a fortress-like appearance, operators said. But the open-style windows can look enticing to robbers. "They can remain more anonymous, make a chael Evans said Wednesday. Restaurant owners and police say thefts at drive-through windows are infrequent.

"It hasn't been a problem," said Death Notices Today's Alphabetical Listing By Dennis niemiec Free Press Staff Writer For fast-food restaurants, drive-through windows can mean convenience, speedy service and megapro-fits. Recently, they also have become windows of criminal opportunity in a string of armed robberies and the shooting death of Burger King manager Cassandra Dice. Dice, 48, was killed Tuesday night by a gunman who walked up to the window at her Dearborn Heights restaurant and reached through it during a robbery attempt. An accomplice drove the gunman away, police said. A suspect in the shooting was arrested Wednesday and was expected to appear in court this morning, police said.

Similar robberies have occurred over the past two months at fast-food restaurants in Dearborn Heights, Warren and Detroit, according to police. Police say the robberies may be by the same men. But restaurant operators say such robberies won't change the way fast-food business is done. Tuesday. Brown is expected to be arraigned today in 36th District Court on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of mutilating, defacing or removing a body. Police said Allen caught Brown removing and inappropriately handling the body of a 52-year-old woman. The two argued, then Brown retrieved a hunting knife from the upstairs apartment he shared with Allen and Kruger and killed them, police said. Security or SSI beneficiary or to PROCTOR DOROTHY T.

at Hidden Springs S3 father of Suzanne, Sherry Beloved wife of the late Carl; dear mother of Carole (John) Mevis; BY WYLIE GtRDES Free Press Staff Writer Fonderalla Lampin refused to let age slow her down. The retired vocal music teacher, a resident of Troy for more than 40 years, was a faithful follower of her racehorses well into her 80s. Mrs. Lampin died Tuesday at her Troy home. She was 86.

At the time of her death, she owned five standardbred racehorses, which compete at Hazel Park, Northville and Jackson tracks and at county fairs throughout Michigan. Mrs. Lampin, the former Fonderalla Hollinger, took over husband Paul Lampin's horse racing operation when he died in 1981, said her daughter, Margaret Panek. At one time, she had as many as 10 horses. "She was in the horse racing business, but she wouldn't bet.

Her father had lost their home" in Evansville, by gambling, "so she would never bet," Panek said. Don Currier, who trained Mrs. Lampin's horses, said she traveled hundreds of miles by herself to see them race. "She was very loyal. She was like a Southern lady at the Kentucky Derby.

She was all class," Currier said. Two of her top current horses are Hustle Laurel and Laurel's Beauty, Currier said. Mrs. Lampin taught music in the Royal Oak schools for 45 years and was an organist who accompanied various church choirs, her daughter said. "She was very active, very high strung, very demanding.

She was a perfectionist. Everything had to be just right. She would not sit at home and do nothing. We had to call each other to make appointments to meet because she was so busy," her daughter said. Mrs.

Lampin was a member of the Michigan Education Association, the Troy Humanities Club, the Troy Bridge Club, the Michigan Harness Horseman's Association and the U.S. Trotting Association. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Lampin is survived by six grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m.
