DETROIT FREE PRESS Wednesdav. July IS. '73 7-D Blume': The Ex You Love Could Be Your Own as "Bob Carol Ted Alice" and the under-appreciated "Alex in Wonderland," Mazursky has worked in partnership with Larry Tucker. "Blume in Love" marks his debut as a soloist producer- director-writer. He demonstrates a remarkable ear as well as a remarkable eye.

Most important, he demonstrates a range of reference uncommon to most of the minds behind our movies. It is Mazursky's range reference, extending as it does to the sociological, psychological, cinematic and literary spheres, that raises his work to must-see. status from now on, Miss Anspach. The actress who came to our attention in "Five Easy Pieces" demonstrates the fullness of her talent in "Blume." Her Nina Blume deserves to be remembered as the first radiantly appealing feminist ever created on screen. In smaller roles, Kristoffer son continues to demonstrate an easy amiability; Shelley Winters does a raucous comic turn as one of Segal's clients; and writer-director Mazursky indulges us with another of his hilarioys sketches ot a weirdo the weirdo for this occasion being Segal's law partner.

Disgusted, depressed, wildly jealous of Kristofferson and half-mad with unrequited love for Miss Anspach, Segal embarks upon a frenzied program of courtship. Whoever said that love is lovelier the second time around should also have noted that it requires roughly 10 times more imagination, tenacity and plain old energy. HERE George Segal surpasses even his own estimable record for performances characterized by both charm and intelligence. His job here is not particularly easy, either.

STUDIO NORTH Wood mii "Blume in Love" establishes Paul Mazursky as the most abundantly talented oddball at work in American cinema. It is a recklessly imagina-t i romance, replete with pointed observations about the follies peculiar to our times. But it is still generous enough of spirit to offer its terribly confused, terribly contemporary protagonists a good crack at happily-ever-after.

Set in Venice, Italy, and the Los Angeles area Mazursky knows and reviles so well, "Blume in Love" stars George Segal as a successful divorce lawyer with a consuming passion for Susan Anspach, a weir fare worker. This being a Mazursky picture, you may have already guessed that Segal's is no routine case of consuming passion. Miss Anspach is his ex-wife. THE FILM opens with Segal wandering around St. Mark's Square, alone and forlorn as he remembers the Venetian honeymoon he and Miss Anspach shared six years earlier.

Wherever he looks, he finds lovers, including satiric reincarnations of that gruesome twosome Luchino Visconti produced for his film version of "Death in Venice." As Segal remembers the details of his great love affair, Mazursky cuts away to California, where the relationship between the divorce lawyer and the welfare worker flourished and foundered. They meet at a farm workers' rally, marry soon afterward, live happily together for a while, even though he doesn't take her yoga classes seriously, and divorce when she catches him fresh out of their bed with his secretary. Thereupon Miss Anspach, a free spirit growing more free all the time, takes up residence with a happy-go-lucky, do-nothing musician played by Kris Kristofferson. ALL NEW SEXTET t. BABY SITTER 5.
