That's all that stood between the Michigan Wolverines and the collapse of this whole big dream of theirs. Bit by bit and piece by piece, it had been slipping away a premature center snap, a third down sacking of quarterback Dennis Franklin, a missed extra point after the" only touchdown of the day. It was a little bit like watching the Penobscot Building being razed brick by brick. But the Wolverines, third ranked in the nation and unbeaten all season, simply wouldn't stand for a tie football game. WITH ALMOST frightening determination, they burst four big plays on the startled Purdue Boilermakers and grabbed a share of the Big Ten title Saturday with a 9-6 victory on Mike Lantry's 30-yard field goal with a mere one minute remaining in the game.

Senior captain Randy Logan, the wolfman, got it going with sideline interception of Purdue quarterback Gary Danielson's pass to Dan Roman, turning the ball over to the U-M offense with just more than three minutes to play. Victory No. 10 of the year, victory No. 7 of the Big Ten season, at least a share of the Big Ten title (the third in four years) and, with Ohio the last obstacle left, possible second straight trip to the Rose Bovl. For Purdue, obviously well-prepared for this game against highly ranked U-M, it was the second straight year of near-miss.

Last yf.ar it was a Dana Coin's kick from the 25-yard line with 26 seconds left that beat them. This time, it spelled the end to the Boilermakers' dreams of sharing a Big Ten title and slipping out to Pasadena for the holidays. They're now 5-2 in the conference, eliminated from everything. "I knew without looking at it that I had a good kick." said Lantry, trying to reconstruct the winning field goal in his mind. "It felt good on my foot.

When 1 looked up I could see it was through. "That got me out of the doghouse, I guess." he grinned, recalling the missed extra point after the Wolverines hjtf scored a touchdown on an 11-yard Franklin to tight end Paul Seal pass in the third quarter. He dropped back, couldn't find a receiver and run for dear life 19 yards up the middle to the Purdue 41 yard line. Now the adrenalin was flowing. Tailback Chuck Heater's (urn. What it wis was scary. Scary and exciting. Just like a year ago, the Michigan football team was pushed to the limit by Purdue before winning on a last-minute field goal and again it makes you wonder about the way football is played around here. In fact, it's almost like we're seeing a taped replay of the 1971 season. For two straight seasons, Michigan rolled over everyone in sight through the first nine weeks, winning by scores of 56-0, 61-7 and 13-7 one year and 41-7, 42-0 and 31-0 the next year.

And, for two straight seasons the Wolverines ran into Purdue and had to huff before they could pull the game out. So you have to wonder: 1 Are we being fooled by Michigan playing so many soft teams early in the year? 2 Or is this a team that does what it must to win? It is probably a little of each. We probably have become deluded by the way the Wolverines run over patsies. We probably expect too much when the Wolverines run up against a team with the talent of Purdue. But let's never lose sight of the fact that the important thing Is not how you play the game but whether you win or lose and so far you have to be impressed with the results Bo Schem-bechler has been getting around here.

Even though he may try men's souls with his conservative approach to the game of football, he has been a master in the games played in the Michigan Stadium. The 9-6 squaker over Purdue was Bo's 22nd straight victory at home and not even Woody Hayes can make such a statement. The problem is the point Bo still must prove is that his brand of football can win all t've games, and coming up now is another test in Columbus, and, possibly, the ultimate test in Pasadena. Boilermakers Were Daring Bo hasn't made it all the way. But, for this season, you have ft say so far, so good.

Purdue was the best team the Wolverines have faced this season. That was evident right from the start, the way the Boilermakers came out with such abandon and starting moving the ball around on the Wolverines. Purdue was passing on first down. The Boilermakers were, hitting dangerous sideline passes. They were running Otis Armstrong on some smart delays and, in general, paying little regard to Michigan's reputation.

The Wolverines just couldn't seem to get going. It got as frustrating as last year's game in West Lafayette, or the Ohio State game here, which the Wolverines squeezed out, 10-7, or the Rose Bowl game, which they lost to Stanford, 13-12. They just didn't seem able to adapt to the conditions. With just 33,001 fans the smallest crowd MSU has played before in three years liberally sprinkled around grey old Memorial Stadium, the Minnesota Golden Gophers upset the error-prone Spartans, 14-10.

Michigan State gave up the ball twice on fumbles and once on a pass interception all on consecutive possessions in the third quarter and the Gophers turned those mistakes into 11 points. NEITHER team got its touchdown by what might be called conventional methods. Michigan State struck first, taking the opening kickoff and marching to the Minnesota 11 before David B. Brown fumbled into the end zone and tackle Joe DeLamielleure recovered for a Spartan six-pointer. Minnesota's only TD came in the third period when defensive end Steve Neils intercepted a pitchout in the MSU backfield and ran it 36 yards to paydirt.

Minnesota's other points came on 41 and 48 yard field goals by Steve Goldberg and a two-point conversion by fullback John King. Michigan State got a 25-yard field goal and an extra point from their little Dutch boy, Dirk Klrjt. Bowls Fill Up Fast A 6 p.m. deadline for Invitations imposed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association -r- passed Saturday, and the country's major football bowls began to fill up in a hurry. Here's the picture: chance to win at Minneapolis he's now lost here all eight times he's brought the Spartans and he admitted afterwards he was a little disappointed.

"When we got by Purdue and Ohio State I kinda thought we might finish up 4-0," he conceded. "But we just didn't execute on offense, Once again, the defense played well enough to win kept trying to punch it out and couldn t. Schembechlcr changed his tactics at the start of the second half. He had to. His ways weren't working.

So his team came out and threw an end-around at Purdue. It didn't work, but it was an admission by Bo that his other strategy wasn't working either. In two plays, quarterback Denny Franklin put the Wolverines In business. He hit Bo Rather for a 20-yard gain in a tough third-down situation and then, in another touchy third-down spot, he lofted a long one to Clint Haslerig which carried 52 yards. It didn't exactly prove that Michigan has a passing game because after Franklin's 1 1-yard strike to Paul Seal for the touchdown, the Wolverines had- trouble when they tried to go back to the air.

UM Got the Big Break However, the point is that these Wolverines had it when they needed it maybe not a whole lot, but enough, and don't overlook the fact they were up against a very good football team. Even though Purdue's record is no better than 5-5 for the season, the Boilermakers are as dangerous as most teams around today. They have an awful lot of talent. When it got near the end and the Wolverines needed a break, they got it when Randy Logan picked off Gary Daniclson's pass to give Michigan the ball on its own 42 and set the Wolverines in motion to drive back for the winning TD. So they were favored by 13'2 points and won by three, but they made the plays when they had to.

There was Logan's interception, then a great run by Franklin for 19 yards and another brilliant effort of 22 yards by Chuck Heater. But at the same' time Michigan State was managing just eight first downs, five during that first period touchdown drive and three in the final quarter. In between, they went over 44 minutes without a first down. "After our first drive and score, the bubble seemed to burst," a long-faced Daugherty said in the almost silent Spartan dressing room.
