Student-Prepared Ads Make 'Collegian' Pay BY DOROTHY CLOCDMAX The Detroit Collegian, Wayne University's tri-weekly tabloid-sized newspaper, has the most unique and profitably efficient advertising department in the country. Florence Schurgin, business and advertising manager of the paper, is the only college girl in the country holding down such a job. Graduating this June, she is the first woman student to major in Advertising at Detroit's metropolitan university, and believes she will be the first such graduate to complete such a course. "I consider myself an experiment," quips the capable young newspaper woman, who makes student-prepared advertising bring top sales results to Detroit's stores.

This unusual advertising department functions under Florence's orders in an almost professional manner. Before the advertising manager of a store is contacted by one of the student space salesmen, a complete advertising brochure is drawn, up under her direction. Promotion ideas, ad layouts complete to merchandising, copy and art are included, as well as reasons for appealing to the 5,000 Wayne students. Fashion Board Is Selling Point THE COLLEGIAN'S greatest selling point is its merchandising angle which evolves around the Wayne Fashion Board a group of 12 attractive and fashion-conscious young women. The Board meets monthly to promote or ban certain styles on the campus.

Last fall, they successfully launched the baby blanket headgear which caused a shortage in the baby departments of stores. These 12 girls, Hortense Groves, Betty Jane McConnell, Barbara Handel, Carolyn Hegwood, Pat Heath, Diana Pollard, Jane Ann Clossen, Tisch Fiscus, Betty Ann Danto, Frances Von Roden and Ellen Woodworth, watch the fashion magazines and the shops for styles suitable to city-bred collegians. Each month buyers or stylists from the large department stores "sit in" at these clothes conferences. When fashion shows are held at the college, the girls act as models but differently. They choose the clothes themselves to be sure they're campus-correct! In this same way, the advertising copywriters selfcct the merchandise for the ads which will run in the Collegian.

And the excellent results from such personal contact are recorded on the profit sheet of the paper's ledger. Advertising has increased 300 per cent since 1941 when the new policy was inaugurated. 4E for Fashion Efficiency' BACK IN 1941, Milo Ryan, former journalism instructor-advisor to the paper, conceived the student-prepared ad idea. Harold Ahlgren, the new advisor who replaced Mr. Ryan, when he became Associate Professor of Journalism at University of Washington, is carrying on his work with the advertising department.

"'E for fashion Efficiency is our motto," stated Florence, looking up from her ad scheduling. "And we hope to develop our merchandising plan to the point where our advertising will support a daily newspaper at Wayne." Ranked in its newspaper class by the Associated Collegian Press as first in advertising, the Collegian rates third editorially, throughout the country. Ralph Dorazio, class of '44 history major, is their present editor, assisted by Norma Nikrant, managing editor. Awards for Promotion Ideas COLLEGE BUSINESS REVIEW has awarded four prizes to Florence and her competent staff (and her brother Art before her) for smart promotion ideas to build ad sales. Their next scheduled promotion is a fashion show to be held in May with cb-eds as models.

Of the talented Florence's bright future there is no question. At present, she is college correspondent for Mademoiselle magazine, and is considering the advantages of a New York career. In addition to her day and night duties at the paper, Florence serves on the college fashion board of a large Detroit department store. Florence Schurgin, business and advertising manager of Wayne Unversity's Detroit Collegian newspaper, discusses make-up problems with Ralph Dorazio, editor of the tri-weekly. 1.
