THE TOWER KITCHEN Today's Program at Your Favorite Theater' RAINBO- UNITED DETROIT THEATERS 12 THE DETROIT FREE PRESS MONDAY, APRIL. 26, 1943 FLAMINGO-Crat'otindI pi 3460 THE PROBLEM CLINIC Strong Arm Teaching Produces Fear in Child BY DR. GEORGE W. CRANE CASE M-141: Janet 7 years old, is the niece of a physician friend of mine. "I promised my wife I would teach Janet to swim," this doctor explained.

He is an accomplished swimmer himself. "But the child absolutely refused to go where the water was over her knees. I coaxed her, and told her she could not swim in shallow water, but I couldn't persuade her differently. "Finally, I threatened her. Still she refused.

So I picked her up and tossed her out in the deep end of the pool. "She spluttered and yelled, but she learned to swim. Now my wife argues that I used the wrong psychology. What do you say to this positive treatment, Dr. Crane A jf 4 -m--- 9 i i afraid Delicious Meat Substitute Thursday, the Office of Price Administration removed blackeyed beans from the list of ration foods.

Like all of the dried legumes they are a vegetable alternate for meat. Use them to help stretch red coupons. Serve in cream soups, loaves and casserole dishes. Black-Eyed Beans Are Taken Off Ration List Children Like Talks on Ethics BY GLADYS BEVAXS DO YOU EVER have ethical discussions with your children? Not with the little ones, for you can't split hairs with little children. But more important still, their moral sense (in our complete meaning of the word) hasn't developed.

They are going through earlier social stages, and their yardstick is largely what their closest grownups approve or disapprove of, rather than of abstract right and wrong. So we wouldn't undertake this experiment with our small boys and girls but instead, with those from about 10 to 12 or 13. You can choose your own incidents for a discussion of this sort, but here is a suggestion for a hypothetical case you might describe: "Suppose you are standing at a crossroads, and a boy comes running and is plainly terrified. Suppose he passes you and turns to the left. "THEN SUPPOSE, in a minute or so, a big, burly, ugly-looking man comes running along with a stick in his hand.

"He gets to the crossroads and stops puzzled. Then he says to you, 'Did you see a boy pass here? Vhich way did he "What would vou answer, to the right or to ths left?" Try that on your children, and see what they answer. Ethical discussions are interesting to hold with children after their moral sense is developed. Often such talks will help to clarify their thoughts and actions, too. Answers to that hypothetical question will vary.

Some children will say, "I'd tell him 'to the left' because that was the way the boy did go." IN ANSWER to your question "U'hy would you?" that child might answer, "Because it's the truth, and it's wrong to tell a lie." Another child might say, "I'd tell him the boy turned to the right to put him off the trail." And when you ask why, that child might say, "Because it would save the boy, and if the man was wicked and wanted to harm some one, he wouldn't have any right to know the truth. I think it would be dumb to tell him which way the boy did really go." There's a fine point. There's such a thing as literal truth, an-1 there's such a thing as a justice which serves the truth of a situation; there might be a moral issue involved which is higher than literal truth. Try some ethical discussions with your children. You'll find yourself keenly interested in tneir point of view.

By this new reduction in points, OPA gives those of us who cook another opportunity to show that we have the courage to help make a success of food "rationing That we are determined to stretch our points with unrationed foods and use them in building healthful meals. Elack-eyed peas or beans are unfamiliar to many housewives. But, they won't be for long Not at 0 points a pound.

"Pansy-faced" with an oval of black around the eye, the bean is distinctive in appearance. You will have no trouble recognizing the variety when you go shopping for them in your market. Plis "WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME" With Allan Jones an Gloria Jean DIAGNOSIS: Many children will learn to swim by this dangerous "sink or swim" method of teaching them. But they may remain terrified of the water all the rest of their lives. In fact, a large number of swimmers never learn to like the water, and show their fright by arching their necks unduly. Janet was a shy little girl from a small town in the South.

She had come here for a short vacation. Although she was among relatives, she was away from her mother and her father. Her nervous tension was probably already somewhat above average owing to homesickness and fear of the strange city. On top of this, she was doubly shy regarding her big, athletic uncle. Her learning to swim had been his idea, for he believes that every child ought to be well equipped to meet the hazards of life.

Most of us would agree with the wisdom of this view. Insufficient Patience BEING A dominant type of man who doesn't believe in vacillating tactics, he grew irritated at her timidity. It would have Correct Use of Coloring Softens Face HAVE YOU a Hepburn face long, thin and angular, but somehow without the Hepburn air? You may find part of the answer in the way you use make-up. Make-up won't make you a Hepburn, but you can be improved. Many women make the mistake of emphasizing a jutting cheekbone unknowingly by rouging either along the cheekbone line or covering the hollow just below it.

In either case the effect is to play up the very feature that should be soft-pedaled. To soften those contours, try putting on rouge this way. Begin just below the pupil of your eye. Sweep out and up almost to the hairline, then back and down opposite the nostril and about an inch away from it. This makes a wide "wing" of color on your face.

Blend the edges until the rouge seems to melt into your natural skin tones. Now look. With no sharp diyiding line between cheekbone and cheek hollow, with color carried across both, your face has a new, softer look. OCR DRY CLEANING CONSERVES WOOL, SILK APPAREL. BHOSSY GLEANERS "Since 1861" Phone CO. 4500 4866 Woodward been far wiser if his wife had taken over the task of teaching Janet to swim. As a rule, men do not have the patience which women possess, so they are less likely to be as good teachers to young children. Men are more blunt and tactless.

They are more inclined to employ strong-arm methods. But these produce fear in children. And when we are emotionally unstrung, it is difficult for us to make good progress at learning complicated habits. The first requisites in teaching children to swim is to produce liking for the water. I was able to overcome my youngsters' normal fear of a ducking by encouraging them to hold their breath and see how long they could keep their faces under the surface.

At the start, they averaged only 12 to 15 seconds, for their fear caused their hearts to pound so rapidly they demanded frequent breaths. Forgot Fear of Water ON SUBSEQUENT attempts they were able to reach 30 seconds. Then I explained Hou-dini's secret, which I described in this column some time ago. By trying to follow this plan, they forgot their fear of the water. Within a quarter of an hour they had reached 70 seconds.

Moreover, they were relaxing in the water, instead of remaining tense. We made a game of this modified diving, and their vanity was being inflated. Whenever our pride is inflated with respect to a given object or situation, we usually like that object or situation. This basic law in psychology greatly helped in their learning to swim. Then I encouraged them to hold their breath and fall into the water, floating until they needed another breath.

It wasn't long until they were swimming, and they don't have that tense fear common to many swimmers. This necessary Awrey Store rationing may mean that sometimes especially in the afternoons you may not be able to get the particular variety of baked goods you wish.

It may also mean that you will find Awrey assortments not nearly as numerous or so complete as you are accustomed to seeing them in the past. Trying to keep the available supply of baked goods up somewhere near present demands is now our everyday problem confronted, as we are, by a scarcity of labor, a shortage of raw materials and severe rationing of shortenings and fats, canned fruits, spices, syrups and other essential materials.
