That document the academy said also will make some recommendations regarding the future of saccharin The panel had been asked to examine both the risks and benefits of the sugar sub stitute but it said it could find studies that permit objective assessment of the asserted health benefits of saccharin It conceded that between 50 and 70 million people use the substance and many rely on it for help in dieting A of private physicians believe saccharin is for their diabetic patients for patients being treated for weight problems and for patients with other the panel said But it said what people generally believe doesn't constitute scientific evidence and study that meets the current criteria for an adequate clinical trial has been conducted explicitly to examine the effectiveness of saccharin in the control of weight or blood sugar levels studies on the use of non nutritive sweeteners to manage obesity and those pertaining to diabetes were considered by the committee to be inadequate to either prove or disprove the alleged benefits of saccharin And finally the panel noted the most conclusive studies show that saccharin most often causes cancer in the bladders of male rats and especially those males born to females who were exposed through their lifetimes and pregnancies Sadat oils Arab League Says It Buy Egypt BAGHDAD Iraq (AP) Leaders of 20 Arab nations sent a delegation to Cairo Saturday in a last ditch bid to talk Anwar Sadat out of making a separate peace with Israel but the Egyptian president responded with a swift and angry rebuff The four man delegation carried with it an implicit offer of massive Arab financial aid if Egypt abandons its go it alone peace drive But Sadat declared to the Egyptian Parliament the millions in the world will not buy the will of Egypt!" The reconciliation mission dispatched by the Arab summit meeting here was headed by Lebanese Prime Minister Salim el Hoss Sadat went before the Parliament in Cairo a short time after word reached the Egyptian capital that the Hoss group was headed there coming to this rostrum" he told the legislators were informed by foreign news agencies that those meeting in Baghdad had sent a delegation which was already on its way They did not ask permission They shall not meet with me or any Egyptian official" Sadat told a news conference later however that he would be willing to meet with Arab heads of state they choose to come to Egypt they are welcome and am ready to sit with them and discuss The official Iraqi news agency said delegation' carried a message from President Hassan al Bakr of Iraq chairman of the Arab League summit saying that if Sadat agreed to return to the Arab fold summit conference promises to guarantee the steadfastness of Egypt and its That was a clear reference to an Iraqi proposal at the conference that the Arab countries give Egypt up to $5 billion to draw Sadat away from his growing dependence on the West for bolstering his sagging economy The delegation was instructed to deliver the message report on the results of the summit so far and receive the Egyptian leader's reply before returning to Baghdad But they were met by only a junior official at Cairo airport were driven to a Cairo hotel and were expected to return to Bagh dad later Saturday With Hoss were Syrian Information Minister Ahmed Iskandar Irqi Baath Party official Tariq Aziz and oreign Minister Ahmed al Suedy of the United Arab Emirates Hoss and Suedy represent governments with relatively moderate positions on Egypt's peace moves But Syrian and Iraq are leading hard line states in the opposition to the US sponsored Egyptian Israeli negotiations Egypt was the only member of the 21 nation Arab League not represented at the summit which was called by Iraq specifically to reach a united Arab stand against the bilateral peace But it appeared the participants in the Baghdad meeting probably would not reach a concensus on how to react to the impending peace treaty Palestine Liberation Organization spokesman Yasser Abed Rabbou told reporters after Sadat's snub of the delegation that illusions some people had about Sadat were short lived This means we should return to the summit and lake a resolute stand against the Egyptian regime We must decide on military and political confrontation from a united The hard line states and the PLO want to isolate Sadat politically and economically but the con servative governments led by Saudi Arabia have resisted (the conservatives) argue that isolating Sadat will merely push him closer to Israel" said one summit delegate who declined to be identified Iraq Syria Algeria and the PLO are pressing for sanctions against Sadat on the grounds that he has already sold out the Arab cause by agreeing to a separate peace treaty with Israel refused to consult with other Arab leaders and has spoken for the Palestinians without authority Conference sources reported the summit has approved an $11 billion fund to beef up Arab military capability for the confronation with Israel in the event Egypt abandons the southern front with the Jewish state Crucial to the hard campaign is to win over King Hussein from his neutral stance tjbe
