DETROIT FREE APRIL 23, 1983 7A -T1 ft TT -1 I JL JL I J. I JLZ JL! Scouts ot 011 tracii 01 uca souinoaw By TERRY FOSTER Free Press Sports Writer 4 Mi a -t -x throw fastballs and come back with some breaking stuff the second time around." In a 24-1 victory over Warren last week, Karasinski struck out nine hitters and scattered four hits. KARASINSKI SAYS he won't turn professional out of high school. "I'm going to college. I want to get the education first," he said.

Utica is ranked in the top 10 of the MacombEast baseball polls. However, Chapoton is quick to point out that his team lost a lot of offensive punch from last year namely Dave Nash, Rod Brunelle and Jim Nowalski. Leading players this season include first baseman Ed Colinas, a 6-foot-3 senior who hit .385 last year. Also in the infield are second baseman Mike Schefka and shortstop Mike Pribula and third baseman Jeff Farrington. Utica won last year's Macomb Athletic Conference title even though Karasinski was out most of the season with a broken ankle.

He missed the rest of the high school season. fieiuer-first baseman; he batted .385 last year in limited action. Hard-throwing southpaws like Karasinski are at a premium in the baseball market. Against L'Anse Creuse, his fastball was clocked around 85 miles an hour. "The most exciting thing about him is that he is a left-hander who throws hard," said coach Chapoton.

"Everybody wants a couple of left-handers these days." "He has a good fastball and quick breaking curve," said Bob Kowaleski, who scouts Michigan for the Philadelphia Phillies. "It is difficult to say now if he can make it in the major leagues. He has to do a lot of improving and he knows that. But I'd say he is one of the top left-handed prospects in the state." TWO DAYS after his perfect game, Karasinski was relaxing in his living room with his parents (Frank and Delores) and friend Jeff Baker. They were watching the Tigers' Milt Wilcox come within an out of a perfect game.

That brought memories of a game when Karasinski, then 15, had two outs in the last inning and gave up a bloop single over second base. He wasn't about to let the same thing happen against L'Anse Creuse. Thoughts of a no-hitter crossed his mind in the third inning. Until then, the Lancers hadn't even been able to hit a foul ball, tit Dave Karasinski has an unspectacular pitching record for Utica High School the senior has won just five of 11 career decisions. Yet a dozen or so college and professional baseball scouts watch his every move and the number is expected to rise as the season progresses.

Karasinski's record is deceiving. Utica Coach Paul Chapoton is certain he will be successful as a Division I college pitcher and is a major league prospect. Scouts from the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and University of Michigan seem to agree. They have been following him since he was a sophomore. His support from teammates wasn't much to speak of that year, and Karasinski went 0-5.

But he showed signs of being a good pitcher, giving up just three runs a game. His stock grew further two weeks ago when he pitched a perfect game against L'Anse Creuse. He fanned 20 of 21 batters in the 13-0 decision. His bid to strike out every L'Anse Creuse hitter was spoiled when the next to last batter in the seventh inning bunted. "Yeah, I was upset.

Who bunts with one out in the seventh, trailing 13-0?" he asked. "I picked the ball up, bobbled it a couple of times and threw him out at first by a fraction of a second. On the last batter, I threw the ball harder than I did the entire game." KARASINSKI IS telling the story in the upper balcony of the Utica gym. Downstairs, it's the last hour of gym class and the other students give Karasinski a good ribbing about being interviewed by a reporter. He takes it in stride.

Karasinski (5-foot-ll, 180 pounds) has blond hair, deep blue eyes and a muscular build from his two years on Utica's varsity swim team. It is the upper body and leg strength that makes his fastball so potent, he says. He is also a quality left Free Press Photo bv WILLIAM ARCHIE Utica High pitcher Dave Karasinski throws a fastball. "I just wanted to go out and throw strikes," he said. "I felt really strong from the start and I just wanted to see how my control was. They (L'Anse Creuse) were chasing after my pitches and I didn't really have to throw in the strike zone." Junior Jeff Pocious ended up catching Karasinski after senior Pat Parslow cut his foot in an accident. "Jeff did a good job," Karasinski said. "I told him my game plan before the game and I only had to shake him off a few times.
