Chuck Noll and Bill Walsh, the most dominant coaches in Super Bowl history, and Walter Payton, who rushed for more yards than any player in the NFL, are the newest members of pro football's Hall of Fame. Noll, who won four Super Bowls, and Walsh, who won three, were elected Saturday along with Payton. Giant dies: Wrestler Andre the Giant dead at 46.

6C The announcement was made in Los Angeles. They will be joined in the Class of 1993 by Dan Fouts, one of just three passers to throw for more than 40,000 yards, and guard Larry Little, one of the premier offensive linemen of his time. The five were chosen by a 34-member media panel from a group of 15 finalists, and will be inducted July 31 in Canton, Ohio. Payton had 10 seasons of 1,000 yards or more rushing for the Chicago Bears and finished his career with 16,726 yards. He had 77 games with more than 100 yards rushing and scored 110 rushing touchdowns.

He was elected in his first year of eligibility. With all his records, Payton didn't think his election was a sure thing. "You don't expect anything except death and taxes," he said. "It's always good to get recognition. "I played a kids' game and got paid for it.

I tried to play the way I was taught and I owe a debt of gratitude to the coaches I played for in high school, in college and with the Bears. You are an extension of these people." Noll and Walsh took over struggling franchises and turned them into powerhouses, winning every Super Bowl they reached. Pittsburgh had never won an NFL title when Noll took over the team in 1969. The Steelers were 1-13 in his first season but by 1975 they had become champions. He took Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl championships in six seasons and remains the only coach to win four titles.

If Noll's Steelers were the team of the '70s, then Walsh's 49ers were the team of the '80s. San Francisco was 2-14 in 1978, then hired the 47-year-old Walsh, who had never before been a head coach in the pros. In just three seasons, he took the 49ers to the first of three Super Bowl championships. Walsh's teams won six NFC West championships and Super Bowls in 1982, '85 and '89. Fouts played 15 seasons for San Diego, completing 3,297 passes for 43,040 yards, joining Hall of Famers Fran Tarkenton and Johnny Unitas as the only quarterbacks to throw for more than 40,000 yards.

He led the NFL in passing four straight years 1979-82 and played in six Pro Bowls. Little was a fixture at right guard for the Miami Dolphins during the '70s and was a member of the undefeated 1973 Super Bowl champions. A superb pass blocker, he becomes just the third guard in the Hall of Fame, following Gene Upshaw and John Hannah. Little learned of his election in Las Vegas. "I'm very happy, ecstatic," he said.

"I'm ready to go out this hotel window. I am almost at a loss for words." Dick Stanfel, a guard with the Lions' championship teams of the early 1950s, failed to win election, although he was one of seven finalists. He was the single candidate in the special seniors category. The Lions traded Stanfel to the Redskins in 1956. In his seven-year HOUGHTON, Mich.

Jason Wright started an eight-goal outburst with a power-play goal in the first period Saturday afternoon as Michigan Tech pounded Minnesota, 10-2, in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Wright's goal at 13:29 broke a 2-2 tie for the Huskies, who are 11-10-3 in the WCHA and 11-12-3 overall. Jason Hanchuk at 17:27 and Randy Stevens at 19:07 also added first-period goals for the Huskies. Tech's John Young had a goal and four assists, and Brent Peterson scored twice and assisted on two others. Justin Peca also had two goals.

Minnesota is 10-19-6 and 9-8-5. Friday CCHA (At) Michigan State 6, Bowling Green 2: Anson Carter scored two goals and Bryan Smolinski had a goal and three assists. Brian Holzinger opened the scoring for Bowling Green (12-17 overall, 7-14 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) at 8:24 of the first period. Carter followed for Michigan State (15-9-1, 10-6-1) with goals at 12:32 and 18:47. Bart Vanstaal-duinen scored at 15:57 and Wes McCau-ley at 19:08 to end the period 4-1.

Bowling Green's Jeff Wells had eight saves in the first period. He was replaced by Will Clarke, who made 12 saves. (At) Michigan 8, Illinois-Chicago 1: Cam Stewart had two goals and three BSSlStS Illinois-Chicago (7-14-2, 5-11-2) didn't score until Chris MacDonald's goal at 12:31 of the third period. Pat Neaton opened the scoring for U-M (18-4-3, 14-4-2) with a power-play goal at 10:52 of the first period. Sam Stiver followed with a goal at 16:49.

Stewart scored his goals in the second period, at 2:56 and 12:22. Teammates Kevin Hilton, Mike Stone and Ron Sacka scored at 6:06, 15:57 and 19:52, respectively, to end the period 7-0. At 19, Seles still has an Olive Oyl physique none of the rippling muscles of Martina Navratilova, none of the athletic grace of Graf.

But in a sport in which mental toughness is perhaps more important than physical strength, Seles is in a class of her own. The difference between her and the rest of the women in tennis can be measured not just in the rankings or money, or even in match records and championships. Sure, she is No. 1, has $7.2 million in tournament earnings and eight Grand Slam titles. But the real difference is in her attitude, her willingness to work on her game and her ability to improve.

Instead of being satisfied with her current dominance, Seles is intent on serving harder, learning how and when to approach the net, volleying to end points more quickly. She isn't a complete player yet. Actually, Clark went to Southern California and played 1 1 years in the NFL the last seven as an offensive linemen for Cleveland. Cut, trash burn Any day now, the Lions will announce Henry Bullough as their new defensive coordinator, replacing Woody Widenhofer. Although head Coach Wayne Fontes has interviewed others such as Wade Phillips and Vince Tobin Fontes' mind was made up long ago to hire Bullough. The rest was a smokescreen.

Incidentally, Bullough is considered an excellent coach. Wouldn't you love to have been in on the conversation between the Bills' Darryl Talley and Magic Johnson's bodyguard that led to the confrontation at the L.A. nightclub a week ago? The real question wasn't whether the bodyguard hit or flipped Talley, but whether it was a block or a charge. Does having Bill Clinton in the White House raise the value of the trading card for Steve Sax? The NFL had highlight videos playing on buses transporting media to news conferences all week. Tapes of Lions games were accompanied by the voice of Detroit play-by-play man Mark Champion.

Word is that CBS execs think Champion is a rising star on their radio network. Announcer outperforms team. Wow. Leigh Steinberg, agent of the NFL's star quarterbacks, says of the Lions' Andre Ware: "He thinks it's his team (next year)." Question of the week Is the Super Bowl overblown? O'Hara: "I'm not sure it warrants anything on the level of the 58-installment vigil on the Red Wings' supposed trade of Keith Primeau. But if there's anything that interests the masses more than the Super Bowl this week, I haven't seen it.

By the way, Keith Primeau's still with the Wings, isn't he?" Kupelian: "Depends on what you're looking for. If you're talking about a football game, sure. If you're talking about a celebration of athletic excellence, of Americana, of wholesome competition and bookmaking, naw. If this country can cope with 11 Inaugural Balls, surely it can survive one Super Bowl." Tour (taped). 8:30 p.m.

Detroit News wire services. Back to school: Outfielder healthy, thriving with new baseball camp. From Coast to Coast. Chet Lemon is flourishing. He has his health back, his enthusiasm for the game is intact and he's having a blast.

"For me, it's not about money," Lemon says. "I played in the majors Hong enough not to have to worry about that. I'm 37, 1 wanted to do something. I love working with kids. I've got a good rapport with them." A month ago, he launched the Chet Lemon School of Baseball after touching base with his friends and mentor.

"I was in California when the Ti- gers were out there last September," he says. "I told them what I was thinking about doing. I know Tram (Alan Trammell) had participated with a baseball school in San Diego. Larry (Herndon) had, too. I talked to Cecil (Fielder) about it and Skipper." The Skipper, of course, is Sparky Anderson, and the consensus was that Lemon who just 20 months ago was battling for his life had a project worth pursuing.

So he and his wife, Gigi, moved ahead and on Dec. 27, with Trammell, Fielder and Herndon on hand, greeted a sellout crowd of 130 kids for i the first Chet Lemon School of Ba9e-, ball, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The weekend sessions begin at $85 and range to $195 for the Businessman's Special, Friday through Sunday, of drills and instruction capped with a game. Nobody is excluded. Each weekend is tailored for specific needs.

There's one designed for; T-ball, another for women, still another for parents and children. The first week-long session is scheduled for March, to coincide with spring training. i Anderson, who is a board member, will make an appearance once Tigers arrive at spring training. 1 Lemon is living in suburban Orlando, near his camp facility, and he is too busy to think back to the blood riot in his stomach which nearly took his life. When he does, however, it is to dwell on the illness but to peak about what he and Gigi de- scribe as an incredible outpouring of love and support from his friends and ans in Detroit.

i "He was getting so many cards -and letters they were arriving in Gigi says. Lemon is under no restrictions. "I do everything with the kids," he says. fRun, hit, throw. Just like always." I Except some days, he runs harder and farther, like the day Fielder was (bashing home runs, should have seen Chet running down the balls," Gigi says, laughing.

"He hasn't run that far in a longtime." Those new skills are in the early stage, of development, but it is amazing enough that they are emerging even as she continues to win. And they can pay off at the one Grand Slam she hasn't won, Wimbledon, where Graf beat her in the final last Seles wasn't afraid to stay with her bigger serve against Graf even after double-faulting to start the match and missing on a lot of first serves in the first two sets. She could have played it safe, but safe doesn't help you get better and it doesn't even always help to win.

Rather, she stayed with itand produced four aces in the final set, the last one at 102 mph to save a break point at 4-2, 30-40. In that third set, Seles made an astonishing 79 percent of her first serves without letting up on her power, and that was an important factor in keeping Graf from attacking. For all that, Seles was disappointed with her four double-faults, a sign that she won't be content until she has mastered her serve.
