The victory was only the third in 12 games for the Yankees and moved them within a game of Toronto. Boston 5, Seattle 3: Roger Clemens (8-6) struck out six and held Seattle to four hits in six innings in his return from a groin injury as the host Red Sox ended the Mariners' six-game winning streak.

Bob Zupcic and Mike Greenwell had two-run doubles and Andre Dawson doubled in another run as the Red Sox had 10 hits half of them doubles. Seattle centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr. tied the American League career record for consecutive errorless chances by an outfielder by catching three fly balls. He has gone 541 chances since his last error, tying the record set by Milwaukee's Darryl Hamilton earlier this season. St.

Louis' Curt Flood set the major league record in 1967 with 568. Mariners third baseman Edgar Martinez, last year's AL batting champion, has begun a 20-day rehabilitation assignment at Jacksonville of the Double-A Southern League. He is recovering from a pulled left hamstring. California 2, Cleveland 1: Chad Curtis and Tim Salmon homered within a span of three pitches in the sixth inning for the visiting Angels. Chuck Finley (11-6) won for the sixth time in seven decisions.

Chicago 4, Milwaukee 3: Lance Johnson tripled and scored the winning run for the visiting White Sox on Ron Karkovice's suicide bunt in the ninth. The bunt got by third baseman B.J. Surhoff, who retrieved the ball too late to get Karkovice- as Johnson scored easily. In the eighth, the benches emptied after White Sox first base coach Doug Mansolino started walking angrily toward the Brewers' dugout, where Milwaukee manager Phil Garner came out to greet him. Mansolino had to be restrained and was ejected.

The incident came after Cal Eldred hit Robin Ventura with a pitch in the sixth and Chicago reliever Jeff Schwarz hit Milwaukee's John Jaha in the seventh. Ventura was hit on the elbow and left the game. White Sox first baseman Frank Thomas was scratched from the lineup because of a twisted knee. Giants 4, Mets 2 three in 7 innings. Jack Morris (5-10) gave up six runs and 10 hits in seven innings.

He struck out nine and walked two. Mike Macfarlane followed a two-out walk to Joyner in the first with his 12th homer. Joyner reached on a one-out walk in the third, stole second and scored on Chris Gwynn's two-out single. Brian McRae, who later homered, led off the fifth with a triple and scored on Joyner's single. Braves 3, Pirates 2 PITTSBURGH ATLANTA abrhbi abrhbi Foley 2b 3 0 3 0 Nixon cf 3 111 Knudsen, Gohr might trade places soon By John Lowe Free Press Sports Writer ARLINGTON, Texas Right-handed reliever Kurt Knudsen could be sent to the minor league any day. He senses as much. "I'm looking over my shoulder to see if I'm still going to be here," Knudsen said. "I can see why maybe I might be sent down.

"It would not be a shock if I get sent down. Because we're in a pennant race, if you don't perform, you don't belong." Knudsen gave up two home runs to lose Thursday's game, and has allowed nine homers in his last innings. Some American League starters haven't given up nine homers all season. Knudsen said the homers he gave up Thursday were the only two poor pitches he made in a 50-pitch outing. General manager Jerry Walker said of Knudsen: "He's making some good pitches, and then coming back with a next pitch that's very hitable because it's up in the strike zone or over the middle part of the plate.

He's not getting away with it." Right-hander Greg Gohr could be called up from Triple-A Toledo to replace Knudsen. Although Gohr is a starter, the Tigers wouldn't mind using him in relief for one- or two-inning stints. The Tigers are happy the way Gohr has improved his curveball and change-up at Toledo. LEFT IN: Rob Deer played Friday night because a left-hander Kenny Rogers was starting. Manager Sparky Anderson told Deer he's benching him against righthanders.

"I'm disappointed, because I don't feel like a platoon player," said Deer, who went l-for-5 in Friday's 9-6 loss. "Sparky knows how I feel. I respect him more than any manager I've ever played for. Things like that happen in this game. "I feel I should be an everyday player, but I'm not going to let a selfish thing take away from what we're trying to do here." Deer is hitting .219 and has not driven in a run for more than two weeks.

He said he has been trying to slow down his swing. MORE CONFIDENCE: Left-hander Buddy Groom retired the only batter he faced Thursday night. But it was a big out. The appearance was his first in the majors in his home area. Groom is from suburban Dallas, and he had 17 family members at the game.

Groom has begun making a contribution in long relief. "Last year, I was struggling mentally and with my mechanics, and I felt I couldn't get anyone out," Groom said. "That's all different this year. It's because of experience." Texas tees off on Tigers again, 9-6 TIGERS, from Page IB In that case, it will be next year. The Tigers don't play the Rangers again until next season.

Which might be just as well for the Tigers. During their current 5-17 stretch, the Tigers are 1-5 against Texas. They can't seem to stop the big bats that are helping the Rangers toward the top of the AL West. Friday night, Texas scored five in the third to break a 2-2 tie. Rafael Palmeiro doubled in the inning's first two runs on a hanging 0-2 breaking ball.

Then Gonzalez took over the major league home run lead with his second of the game, 25th of the season and 100th of his career. When Wells then hit Palmer with a 2-2 pitch, Palmer took a few steps toward the mound, but catcher Mickey Tettleton restrained him. Home-plate umpire Jim Evans warned both benches. Anderson then lifted Wells, but not, he said, bedause he hit Palmer. Then Palmer scored the seventh run against reliever Tom Bolton.

Bolton started blanking the Rangers, allowing the Tigers to come back. They got two unearned runs in the fourth off winner Kenny Rogers to make it 7-4. They went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position in the seventh, but scored two in the eighth to make it 7-6. Then Travis Fryman batted with the tying run on third and two out. He took strike three from ace reliever Tom Henke.

Then Texas scored two in the eighth off Mike Henneman. The Tigers dropped from a second-place tie Friday into sole possession of fourth. Although they remained 1V4 behind first-place Toronto, they have not been as low as fourth since the second week. During this 5-17 stretch, the Tigers have four quality starts. No starter is hot.

In the last six games, starters have averaged fewer than four innings. None has lasted six innings. The starters' ERA in those six games is 11.57. Free Press Wire Reports CHICAGO Jose Guzman insisted he wasn't trying to show off on the mound, contending his overpowering performance in an 8-2 victory Friday over the Colorado Rockies was just one of those things. "I wasn't trying to strike out every hitter, it just hap- -MMmn pened," Guzman said I ft ffTT7T I 1 after fanning a sea- 1 son-high 11.

Guzman (8-7), who twice previously struck out 12, allowed six hits and walked one in 8 innings. He entered the game 1-2 with a 5.22 ERA in his last five starts. Derrick May had a homer and four RBIs for the Cubs. He hit an RBI single in the first inning and a three-run homer in the fifth to break open a 3-1 game. The Cubs, held to four runs in their previous four games, also got homers from Sammy Sosa and Ryne Sandberg.

San Francisco 4, New York 2: Darren Lewis had two hits, drove in a run and played in his 267th consecutive game in the outfield without an error, breaking the major league record ot Don Demeter with Philadelphia and Detroit (1962-1965) Atlanta 3, Pittsburgh 2: Otis Nixon hit his first homer since June 30, 1992, and Mark Lemke drove in the winner with a fourth-inning single as the host Braves won their fifth in six games. Greg Maddux (9-8) got help from Mike Stanton's 24th save. San Diego 5, Philadelphia 3: Tony Gwynn hit a two-run homer to cap a five-run seventh inning night for the host Padres. The Phillies have lost six of eight. Cincinnati 4, Florida 0: Jose Rijo won for the first time since May 22 as the host Reds got to two games above .500 for the first time this season.

Rijo (7-5) ended a 10-game winless streak. Hal Morris went 4-for-5 for the Reds. Houston 7, St. Louis 6: Eric Anthony's tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning beat the host Cardinals. Anthony hit the first pitch by Lee Guetter-man (1-1) over the rightfield wall for his eighth homer, snapping a 4-4 tie.

Guetterman's throwing error on a pickoff attempt set up two more runs in the inning. Todd Zeile of the Cardinals extended his hitting streak to 14 games. The club wouldn't release details of the altercation, and Mitchell stayed in the trainer's room until the clubhouse was closed before the game. But one player, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "If I punched the manager, I'd be out of here." General manager Jim Bowden referred to it as an altercation, and said Johnson decided on the suspension and an undis-' closed fine Mitchell's third in three days. The Reds gave Mitchell permission to return home to San Diego last Thursday, four days before the Ail-Star break, for personal reasons.

His grandmother is ill. Mitchell couldn't play anyway because he has a pulled hamstring. But he was expected to attend a workout Wednesday. The club fined him $500 for missing that. He didn't show up for a game Thursday against the Marlins, either.

Johnson said Friday he'll be docked one day's pay roughly $20,000 for that. The club also imposed an undisclosed fine and the two-day suspension for the altercation. Mitchell went on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of the hamstring, so the suspension will begin when he's activated. BOSTON: Manager Butch Hobson signed a contract extension through next season. Hobson, 41, signed a two-year contract before last season.

Details of the contract weren't released, but Hobson said he got "a nice raise."
