2E THE DETROIT NEWS SUNDAY, JANUARY 31, 1993. i i i Wolverines in dazzling rout MSU fashion, 11-1 Payton, Noll get to Hall Chet Lemon Monte Clark Wayne Fontes Mark Champion Ex-Tiger Lemon's in swing of things Chuck Noll and Bill Walsh, the most dominant coaches in Super Bowl history, and Walter Payton, who rushed for more yards than any player in the NFL, are the newest members of pro football's Hall of Fame. Giant dies: Wrestler Andre the Giant dead at 46. 6C Noll, who won four Super Bowls, and Walsh, who won three, were elected Saturday along with Payton. The announcement was made in Los Angeles.

They will be joined in the class of 1993 by Dan Fouts, one of just three passers to throw for more than 40,000 yards, and guard Larry Little, one of the premier offensive linemen of his time. The five were chosen by a 34-member media panel from a group of 15 finalists, and will be inducted July 31 in Canton, Ohio. Dick Stanfel, a guard with the Lions' championship teams of the early 1950s, failed to win election, although he was one of seven finalists. He was the single candidate in the special seniors category. More NFL Ron Kostelnik, 53, who played for the Green Bay Packers during their glory years in the 1960s under Coach Vince Lombardi, was killed when his car ran off 1-75 near Georgetown, late Friday night, officials said.

Kostelnik's wife, Peggy, sustained minor injuries in the wreck and was in stable but guarded condition at a hospital in Georgetown. Golf Robert Wrenn shaved three shots in the last six holes for his second straight 3-under-par 68, a 54-hole total of 202, and a one-stroke lead over Andrew Magee and David Frost after the third round of the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Ariz. Defending champion Arnold Palmer dropped a 10-foot birdie putt worth $50,000 on the ninth hole in the Senior Skins Game at Mauna Lani, Hawaii. Ray Floyd won a total of four skins worth $60,000, Jack Nicklaus dropped long birdie putts for two skins and $30,000, and Chi Chi Rodriguez birdied the seventh hole for $25,000. The back nine of the two-day, 18-hole, made-for-television event will be today (1:30 p.m., ABC-TV), with another $285,000 at stake.

Peter Senior shot a 5-under-par 67 and 203 total for a three-stroke lead over Peter O'Malley after three rounds of the Vines Classic in Perth, Australia. College football Trevor Pryce, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound linebacker from Winter Park, has By Bill Halls THE DETROIT NEWS Coach Red Berenson's Wolverines have scoring balance, solid defense, excellent goaltending and play the kind of team-oriented hockey it takes to win a national title. Michigan displayed all of its talents when it skated to a breezy 11-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory over arch-rival Michigan State before a record turnout of 18,275 at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night. It was the largest crowd to see a regular-season college hockey game in the United States. The previous record of 18,147 was set Nov.

28, when Michigan played Notre Dame at The Palace. "It's the best team I've had," Berenson said. "We're a step better than last year, even without (Denny) Felsner, because our defense is so strong and (goalie Steve) Shields is a year older." David Oliver, Dan Stiver and Mike Knuble each scored two goals for Michigan. Dave Roberts had a goal and five assists. Mark Ouimet, Pat Neaton, Kevin Hilton and Brian Wiseman had the other goals.

Cam Stewart had three assists, and David Harlock, Neaton and Hilton each got two. Even Wolverines goaltenders Shields and Chris Gordon were credited with assists. "We weren't sure if our team was ready to play," Berenson said. "There was so much emotion in our game on Friday and we lost three players. But the momentum built and it was just one of those games I could enjoy.

"Michigan State showed a lot of class. You don't like losing. But if we lost a game like that, I'd hope we handled it the same way." Michigan played without Ryan Sittler, Ron Sacka and Rick Willis, who were suspended for a game after being in a fight during an 8-1 victory Friday over Illinois-Chicago. Ouimet, Michigan's top center, was ejected late in the first period for Open: Courier for 2nd Aussie From page IE dazzled him with sizzling returns and groundstrokes. Edberg didn't seem stiff or slowed by the lower back spasms that nearly caused him to withdraw a week ago.

Rather, after recovering and improving with each match through the semis, Edberg simply couldn't handle the heat and Courier's blazing shots. Surface temperatures on the rubberized hard courts rose to 153 degrees during the match, while air temperatures outside the stadium were 104 degrees harsh conditions for Edberg, a native of Sweden, but perfect for Courier, a native of Florida. Starting out wearing a baseball cap as he hardly ever has, Edberg fell behind 4-1 after Courier broke him in the fourth game. At 5-2, Edberg got rid of his cap and Courier quickly grabbed three set points at 0-40 on strong returns and a netted volley by Edberg. spearing MSU's Bryan Smolinski.

The victory was the Wolverines' fifth straight and 19th of the season against four losses and three ties. They are 15-4-2 in the CCHA and trail first-place Miami by a point in the standings. Miami, which didn't play Saturday, is host to U-M on Saturday in Oxford, Ohio. Ouimet will miss the Ohio State game Friday in Columbus but will be eligible to play against Miami. The Spartans are 15-10-1 and 11-7-1 after the worst loss for a Ron Mason-coached team at MSU.

He has coached the team since 1980. "Losing in front of 18,000 people is no fun," Mason said. "I've had worse nights than this. Losing an NCAA championship is worse." Wisconsin beat MSU 13-3 in the 1978-79 season, when Amo Bessone was coach. Michigan defeated MSU, 9-0, on Feb.

drops Edberg title in row Edberg fought back, pushing Courier through four deuces before dropping the set as a backhand crosscourt return whizzed past the charging Edberg untouched. When Courier served in that first set and most of the second, he was equally punishing, giving up a mere two points in his first seven service games. The first sign that Courier's dominance would subside came when he served for the second set at 5-1. Edberg took a 40-0 advantage, but couldn't get the break as Courier produced six consecutive points. Edberg raised the level of his game in the third set.

Still serving to Courier's backhand, still attacking at the net, and taking advantage now of Courier's errors, Edberg took control and swept through the set as if he were completely fresh. They fought to 3-3 in the fourth set before Courier again asserted himself on returns, drilling several past Edberg to break him to 4-3. AS SEEN ON TV! Boxing WBA super middleweight champion Michael Nunn held on to his title with a unanimous 12-round decision over former champ Victor Cordoba in Memphis, Tenn. Nunn (39-1, 25 knockouts) took the title from Cordoba at Las Vegas in September on a 2-1 decision. Cordoba (18-5-2, 14 knockouts) complained about that decision, and the WBA ordered an immediate rematch. Former world welterweight champion Lloyd Honeyghan, 32, continued his comeback by stopping fellow Briton Mickey Hughes in the fifth round to win the Commonwealth light-middleweight title in London.

From Coast to Coast Chet Lemon is flourishing. He has his health back, his enthusiasm for the game is intact and he's having a blast. "For me, it's not about money," Lemon says. "I played in the majors long enough not to have to worry about that. I'm 37, 1 wanted to do something.

I love working with kids. I've got a good rapport with them." A month ago, he launched the Chet Lemon School of Baseball after touching base with his friends and mentor. "I was in California when the Tigers were out there last September," he says. "I told them what I was thinking about doing. I know Tram (Alan Trammell) had participated with a baseball school in San Diego.

Larry (Herndon) had, too. I talked to Cecil (Fielder) about it and Skipper." The Skipper, of course, is Sparky Anderson, and the consensus was that Lemon who just 20 months ago was battling for his life had a project worth pursuing. So he and his wife, Gigi, moved ahead and on Dec. 27, with Trammell, Fielder and Hemdon on hand, greeted a sellout crowd of 130 kids for the first Chet Lemon School of Baseball, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The weekend sessions begin at $85 and range to $195 for the Businessman's Special, Friday through Sunday, of drills and instruction capped with a game.

Nobody is excluded. Each weekend is tailored for specific needs. There's one designed for T-ball, another for women, still another for parents and children. The first week-long session is scheduled for March, to coincide with spring training. Anderson, who is a board member, will make an appearance once the Tigers arrive at spring training.

Lemon is living in suburban Orlando, near his camp facility, and he is too busy to think back to the blood clot in his stomach which nearly took his life. When he does, however, it is not to dwell on the illness but to speak about what he and Gigi describe as an incredible outpouring of love and support from his friends and fans in Detroit. "He was getting so many cards and letters they were arriving in crates," Gigi says. Lemon is under no restrictions. "I do everything with the kids," he says.

"Run, hit, throw. Just like always." Except some days, he runs harder and farther, like the day Fielder was bashing home runs. "You should have seen Chet running down the balls," Gigi says, laughing. "He hasn't run that far in a longtime." For information on Lemon's baseball school, call 1-800-967-4748 or 407-363-4748. Back to California Monte Clark is heading back into coaching in fine humor.

Cut, trash burn Any day now, the Lions will announce Henry Bullough as their new defensive coordinator, replacing Woody Widenhofer. Although head Coach Wayne Fontes has interviewed others such as Wade Phillips and Vince Tobin Fontes' mind was made up long ago to hire Bullough.

The rest was a smokescreen. Incidentally, Bullough is considered an excellent coach. Wouldn't you love to have been in on the conversation between the Bills' Darryl Talley and Magic Johnson's bodyguard that led to the confrontation at the L.A. nightclub a week ago? The real question wasn't whether the bodyguard hit or flipped Talley, but whether it was a block or a charge. Does having Bill Clinton in the White House raise the value of the trading card for Steve Sax? The NFL had highlight videos playing on buses transporting media to news conferences all week.
