Usually, the infamous sultan of shock radio gets slagged by the press. He's been roasted, toasted and reviled for his many supposed violations of good taste, political correctness and common decency. He's been ripped as a profane, sexist, racially insensitive jerk of the airwaves. But now Stern finds himself in unfamiliar territory.

He actually has been getting some good reviews for his new TV venture, "The Howard Stern Interview," a Cavett was a challenge Howard Stern has tackled a wide assortment of guests on his celebrity interview show, which airs on cable's Entertainment Television. He's chatted up Joan Rivers, James Brown and Donald Trump. But his toughest guest? Dick Cavett. "Dick was my biggest challenge," Stern said. "Dick is so frigging boring that when he gets in front of you, you start to get dizzy.

Your eyes start to flutter all of a sudden and then you feel the REM sleep coming on. "This was a tough task, but I accomplished making Dick Cavett interesting." "I was expecting everyone to give me negative reviews," Stern acknowledged. But, no, Howie's somewhat more subdued if still bodacious cable TV persona has actually found a few fans among the media jackals. Howard Rosenberg, the Los Angeles Times' Pulitzer Prize-winning TV critic, said "The Howard Stern Interview" has "yielded more information than what's available from traditional talk shows. There may not be a better half-hour on television." Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker concluded that "Stern's blunt style breathes some life into the tired TV talk-show format." And even an addled Detroit sofa spud named Captain Video proclaimed that 'The Howard Stern Interview' is pretty fabulous television." Pretty fabulous Forgive me, for I have grinned.

Guests challenged Not that Stern, a shameless and tireless self-promoter, wouldn't appreciate a few more favorable reviews. But he knows that won't be easy to achieve. "It's hard to come out in favor of a scumbag like myself," he said. "But sometimes you have to if the show is good." So far on the manic microphone hog has grilled an ecelectic mix of guests including Joan Rivers, Donald Trump, Garry Shandling, Suzanne about the gory particulars of her cosmetic surgery or the crummy sex life she had with her late husband. Stern did.

And you'll never catch Arsenio or even Letterman goofing around with James Brown quite the way Stern did. "James was a little hard to understand," Stern said. "He speaks in the familiar jive talk. So I brought in a black interpreter to interpret some of the words he was saying. It was very fascinating." And, yes, the Godfather of Soul got into the self-deprecating swing of things, Stern said.

"As a matter of fact, James Brown had a great time with that show. He thought it was wild, and everybody had a good time with it." Fine and vulgar Many people don't think the words "good time" and Howard Stern belong in the same sentence. And the Federal Commuinications Commission is even less amused. In December, the FCC imposed a $600,000 fine on Infinity Broadcasting Co. of New York, the company that beams Stern's popular morning radio show over stations in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago and other cities.

The FCC found that Stern, who frequently and sophomorically discusses bodily functions and sex organs on the air, had violated its decency standards. "I don't think anything I do is vulgar," Stern said. "And I think that the radio show is very honest and open. We have some frank discussions about sex. But I still don't know what is so bad about talking about sex.

Everybody's so hung up with sex. I mean, it's something that we all do." Besides, asserted Stern, neither Infinity nor the radio stations that carry his show will ever pay any fines. "Everybody knows that this is an absolute joke with the FCC," he said, "and Vega, Dick Cavett and James Brown. He asks about their sex lives, he gets in their face, he pesters them. Why would a celebrity bother with such a hassle? Maybe because they're bored with the banal similarity of interviews with Letterman, Leno and Hall, Stern said.

"I think what you find (on those shows) is that it's the same and it's the same dull format. Nobody asks any real questions, any blunt questions." Certainly, you wouldn't expect Jay Leno to start badgering Joan Rivers that unfortunately this has come about because of the religious yahoos in our country who pressure some people." You can't say Howard Stern isn't an equal opportunity offender. He harpoons everyone with his yakety-yak sarcasm, including himself.
