Hoc. Sunday. Nov. 19, 1950 DETROIT FREE RE 8 8 Mr. Benny, I Must Admit, Kept 'Em Awake 45 Minutes r.r That doesn't sound like much of a framework for 45 minutes of television but it hung together remarkably well.

Mr. Benny's character has now been so well established that you anticipate the cigarette vending machine, and the pay phone in the living room, the laundromat he operates out back. Mr. Benny has become in millions of homes a sort of eccentric uncle whose curiosities are eagerly awaited by the rest of the family when he comes to dinner. MR.

BENNY'S writers, a very shrewd bunch, know all about this anticipatory glee they hold the gag back as long as possible, then Mr. B. says: "WELL!" And the joint explodes. I'm not altogether happy about these attempts to reconcile a radio format with television but I must admit that, if I were in Benny's shoes, I'd do the same. BY JOHN CROSBY NEW YORK Jack Benny' television debut, about which I'm awfully late in commenting due to circumstances completely sort of a cross between what Mr.

Benny has been doing on the radio these many years and what he does annually at the Paramount. In short, it was an exploitation of the Benny radio character, a personal appearance, and sort of an exhibition of Benny's very real ability to hold the center of the stage. IT OPENED with a sight gag Benny's violin case flailing about the inside of a bus as he attempts to get off and got under way with Benny himself in front of a curtain discussing his niggardliness. As a concession to television, the bulk of the show was set In a living room, where Mr. B.

displayed his stinginess successively to Rochester, Mr. Kitzel and to his guest, Dinah Shore. within my control, was a personal triumph for Benny but not much or a triumph for television. Benny carried the 45-minute program on his own capable shoulders without the assistance of Mary Livington, Dennis Day or Phil Harris his formidable radio team. He did have the help of Rochester, rather minor assistance from Don Wilson, and a leg-up from his old friend Mr.

Kitzel Just how he managed to get through 45 minutes with such scant clothing is beyond my comprehension. But he did. The show was Crosby 1 1 -1 til -4 is 1 tfif BY BILLY ROSE NEW YORK One of the actors I recently interviewed for my television show was a young fellow named Bill Ferguson I'd seen In the "South Pacific" chorus. Show Business Isn't Too Tough, I Hear hour later the three of them came into the chop house looking for me, and the next morning I was on the stage of the Shubert. "CUTE STORY," I said.

"There's more to it," said Bill. "A columnist heard about what happened and wrote it up, and as a result I got a couple of television nibbles. Then the nicest thing of all happened. "One night Margaret Truman came backstage, and after congratulating Pinza and Mary Martin she asked for the Bill Ferguson she had read about. You see, we went to the same high school in Independence, and broke into singing together in the Baptist Church." "Did your wife get to meet the President's daughter?" "Not that evening," said the youngster, "but she did a few days later when Miss Truman came around to our apartment to see the new baby." "IT'S BEEN NICE talking to you," I said, "but I'm afraid I can't use you on next week's show I'm looking for someone to play a sad, miserable little man." "Still with the show?" "No, I left it a few months ago to try my luck at television." "Show business is a tough racket," I oracled.

"I haven't found it so," said Bill. "Matter of fact, ever since I got to town it's been one good break after another. Incidentally, your friend, Dick Rodgers, was responsible for the first one." and dancing, so we tried out for the show together. Only one of us, however, got picked Evelyn." "Doesn't sound like too good a beginning." "It wasn't," said Bill, "but we figured there wasn't any point moping about it the important thing was not to be separated. So when the show went up to New Haven to break in, I went along with it and, as luck would have it, I landed a job as waiter in Casey's Chop House.

"IT WAS THE best thing that could have happened," the youngster went on, "because a couple of days before the opening who should come in and plunk himself down at one of my tables but Mr. Rodgers. "He recognized me, and when he quizzed me about what I was doing in a waiter's get-up, I told him I had taken the job so as to be near my wife." "The story seemed to tickle him, and when he went back to the theater I understand he held up a rehearsal to repeat it to Oscar Hammerstein and Josh Logan, the director. An "WHAT DID RICHARD do for you?" I asked. "Well," said the youngster, "it started Roue when Mr.

Rodgers and Mr. Hammerstein were holding auditions for the chorus and bit parts in 'South Pacific' My wife her stage name is Evelyn Colby also does some singing Comic Benny: First, then explosions li MiLwl i 4111 Ksrst FOR TV TONIGHT TELEVISION SERVICE ft CALL elevisson TRIYATE LIFE II HENRY VIII" Ml Highlights of the Week KAY-BEE APPLIANCE CO. 19139 Umoi Dl 1-2500 Billie Burke in "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment."
