on Q. I 7 4 11 BY STUART GRIFFIN Special to the Free Press TOKYO Japanese television audiences recently viewed in detail China's atomic experiments in a 34-minute propaganda documentary in color and with music and a Chinese sound tract. It marked the first showing of a film entitled "The Victory of Chairman Mao" 'outside China in a non-communist country, shown ironically in the capital of the only nation to be devastated by nuclear holocaust. The film details China's first three tests, of October 16, 1864-, May 14, 1965, and May 9, 1966, all occuring, like the two that followed, in the wilderness of distant Sin-kiang Province. The film depicts the entire course of the tests, starting with site construction and scientific preparation, and ending with twin scenes of jubilation.

Red Chinese infantrymen in gas masks and white glareproof uniforms, and carrying rifles with fixed bayonets, charge over atomized rubble. In Peking, near-hysterical Chinese mass in Heavenly Peace Square, reading and discussing wall-paper extras in which, the government announced each test success. The film has not yet been ma- They scoffed at shots of soldiers in foB battle dress charging Into the contaminated wasteland (purportedly, though the announcer is lent) immediately after the blast clears. They broke into open laughter at the shots of test-animals guinea pigs, dogs, fowl, scathed from twisted containers, and especially at the just laid egg the camera zooms in to spy in the midst of the ruins. They shook viewing shots plants restoring growing to full their heads of withered to life, then flower, as if untouched by the blast, show ing no ill after effects.

They expressed doubts over the shots of trucks, brick buildings and concrete dugouts caught at the very moment of nuclear destruction, disintegrating before the camera lenses. They found the film highly successful, but from a propaganda point of view, not a scientific one. OBVIOUS QUESTIONS remain unanswered. How far away are the massed and waiting Red Chinese infantrymen and the expectant technicians from the epicenter, the experimental animals, and buildings targeted for obliterations? Were cameras and sensitive instruments buried anywhere near the epicenter, and to what effect in test recordings? How powerful were the telephoto lenses used for the alleged closeups of the blast effects, especially those at the time of blast? Experts saw the film as demonstrating that each blast was successful bigger, more efficient, and with greater yield than the preceding blast. rolling red-t'llows and dirty gray clouds of the first and second tests.
