But "The Hero" does have some friends. The National Association for Better Broadcasting, a Los Angeles-based group known until last August as the National Association for Better Radio and Television, has hailed the show as good family entertainment and says it should be given a chance to gain followers. NABB decided to mount a "Save 'The campaign. NBC was asked to give the show a chance to build followers; the sponsors were asked to hang on. Total Increases In Effect BY BETTELOU PETERSON Free Press TV-Radie Writer Another Halloween has come and gone in Peanuts Land and no Great Pumpkin appeared over the most sincere pumpkin patch ever to appear on TV. Peanuts and the pumpkin were in the third TV special to star the kids from the comic pages and "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" was a delightful half-hour Thursday night. REAIXY, THOUGH, the star of the show wasn't Linus, no matter how sincere he is about the Great Pumpkin. It was Snoopy, the imaginative beagle, as the World War I flying ace tangling with German guns, fleeing across no-man's land and enjoying a medley of World War I songs fendered by Schroeder on the toy piano. As usual, the Peanuts characters were captured with all their charm by the anima-ters in a completely delightful show.

It's turning into a nice holiday TV custom. ANNOUNCEMENTS kept calling Tony Bennett, "the singer's singer" as if it had to be explained why he had an hour on TV. Those who watched the show Wednesday on ABC-TV know now, if they didn't before. Of coure, it had to be at 10 p.m., so the old folks, you know, 30 and up, could grab the channel selector ana opt for melody. Tony hasn't made the teen scene and the rest of us can be grateful for it.

He sings. Just sings. Songs with words and music, richly embroidered by accompaniment, not overwhelmed by it. He isn't the handsomest of guys but Tony sings with his heart and soul and the beauty of the moments he creates comes from inside in honesty and sincerity. It was a handsome) program that surrounded him, not unexpected from Dwight Hemion and Gary Smith, a Friday WJR-760 WCAR-II30 WCHB-1440 CKLW-800 WXYZ-1 270 WJBK-1500 WWJ-950 WKNR-I3I0 CBE-ISS0 WJLB-1400 OTHER AREA STATIONS WQTE-560 WTAK-1090 WBRB-1430 CKWW-580 WEXL-1340 WPON-1460 MORNING 8 A.M.
