Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Ma-.

wn, this cold-war chiller in Technicolor and VistaVision is one sustained chase from i the Plaza in New York to Mt. Rushmore in South Da-i kota. Because Hitchcock is at heart a comedian, with the onmic's feeling for the contrast of the macabre, there are plenty of chuckles and some romance along with the mad pursuit. JAMES STEWART LEE REMICK BEN GAZZARA ARTHUR O'CONNELL rOISKD r.EYOXD her 17 years, young movie star of "Holiday for Lovers" and "Blue Denim" Carol Ljnley spent Thursday in Detroit. Four years ago, as ji mere youngster of 13, she was here in the stage play, "Anniversary Waltz." Of "Blue Denim," in which she also starred on Broadway for six months, Carol says, "I believe in realism if it is done in good taste." She doesn't think "Blue Denim's" story of a teen-age romance and its consequences could possibly hurt anyone. She has only been dating a year, has had dates with her movie costar Brandon de Wilde, but will not commit herself further on the subject.

Five feet five inches, weighing 120 pounds, Carol says that she has to watch her weight. In January she was graduated from high school. Her next picture will be "The Hound Dog Man," of which she says, "Don't think it's HEPBURII STonu QOQQQDQP outh Ses lDVENTUHC CAN NEVER BE SHOWN ON TV ilmi at lam fiHn.j wo Weaver 7 BROWNMURRAY HAMILTONBROOKS WEST directed by OTTO PREMiNGERi Columbia release miist'c by Duke Ellington 10:1 p.m $1.50. 2 7135 XZ TOURISTS VACATIONERS OR CALL WO 2-6911 FREE PRESS WANT ADS TODAY JWy SAT. 3 0 jj-ferA 8:30 ft o)Cz if ITT ITU C4U, EVE ARDEN KATHRYN GRANT and JOSEPH N.

BAR RAVEL AGENCY BUY AND SELL THROUGH aster ideal for the Madison Avenue hero abducted by agents of an unnamed foreign power who mistake him for a secret agent of the United States. As Hitchcock predicted to me In a phone interview a few weeks ago, the big surprise for fans is his transformation of Eva Marie Saint into a sleek, slinky espion-agent. In a drawing room on the 20th Century Limited, she and Grant have one of the most prolonged smooching matches in pictures.

According to the plot, the U.S. Central Intelligence has created a straw man named George Kaplan to harass Mason, the enemy's man. After he has been kidnaped. Grant is equally eager to find Kaplan and vindicate himself. THAT'S HOW Grant meets Miss Saint.

First she appears to be on his side, then she is revealed as Mason's mistress. You don't know WHAT to think, except that she and Grant are falling in love. Hitchcock has given the picture audience identification by filming at the United Nations, Chicago's Ambassador East and on the very slopes of Mt. Rushmore. One enormously effective sequence is filmed on a broad Indiana plain where everything is in tones of brown even to the suit Grant is wearing.

(That he has been and later is again wearing a grey suit is beside the point, as artistic license.) Photographically the movie is often brilliant, and always diverting. IN TIIE BEST Hitchcock tradition Leo G. Carroll is at once sardonic and sympathetic as a Central Intelligence chief who finally lets Grant in on the Kaplan hoax. Jessie Royce Landis has a society nitwit bit as Grant's bridge playing mother. (What are we coming to with Royce, the "Jo" of Jessie Bonstelle's "Little Women," playing Cary Grant's MOTHER?) On all counts, "North by Northwest" is Hitchcock's best picture in recent years.

As he told me, "The chase is an admirable form of preoccupation." Ol' Doc Hitchcock has just the prescription for keeping audiences preoccupied. Show Time ADAMS "North hr North 11:34 a.m.. 2:15. 4:44. 7:13.
