Howard Duff and Ida Lu-pino, stars of the CBS series, are hoping to use the segment as the pilot film for a projected series dealing with a young singing star. Wayne, son of John Wayne, the actor, has his first feature film, "The Young Land," going into release this summer. Disk Jockey Who Wfis College Professor Is Reconl Star Too BY MYRA MacPH ERSON Five Pna Staff Writ PAUL WINTER is best known as a rather quiet WXYZ disk jockey who broadcasts good music Monday and Friday from 10 to 12 p.m. and Sunday 10 to 3 p.m. But behind this calm front is a fertile and slightly off-beat mind at work.

If there's a subject he can't poke fun at, Paul doesn't know it. mm i WINTER Grandma's Boy Harry Lauter, star of ABC-TV' Tales of the Texas Rangers, learned riding and shooting from his 65-year-old grandmother. since 1951 and now has a record of his own, Paul hasn't the slightest idea how a beginner should go about getting songs published andor recorded. 'Fraid I'd be very little help," he said. "Never thought about it before. Wouldn't have recorded this album if a Tale professor friend hadn't had a friend who had a friend looking for satirical material to record." PAUL, SCRIBBLES down song and poem ideas any time, any place. He wrote the bulk of his album material in three weeks.

Some songs and poems date back to his student days as a University of Michigan philosophy major when he doodled oik class notes. A couple of the songs are from a musical-comedy he wrote a few years ago that never went anywhere. Thirty-five year old Paul is an easy going intellectual. After he got his master's degree in philosophy he forged on for a doctorate but never finished his thesis. He taught philosophy at Michigan but gave it up because he thought: "I'd be a lousy philosopher. I found it too easy to make fun of philosophical notions." When I started with WXYZ in 1952 I had an early morning comedy-music show as "Lonesome Luke." I did all the voices. -I LIKE acting, but I think the field is too demanding.

I wouldn't be satisfied acting in something I didn't approve of." One of Winter's pet dislikes are Tennessee Williams plays. He makes fun of them in his album. Before coming to WXYZ Paul also worked for an educational radio station where he played chamber music and "gave readings of high brow short stories." He said he'd still like to get somewhere with a musical-comedy but isn't pushing himself real hard. He plans to do more records. But asked what, he shrugs his shoulders, grins wide and says, "you've got me." About after work hobbies, Paul said: "I used to putter around with silver smithing and wood working but not anymore.

Fisher, Gobel Back Next Year HOLLYWOOD There is a strong possibility that the George Gobel and Eddie Fisher shows on NBC-TV will return to the same Tuesday evening period on the network next fall but at the rate of one a month rather than the weekly alternations of this season. If the plans work out as expected, Gobel and Fisher will each oo 12 shows. The comedian will appear on Fisher's show as a guest star six times, and the singer will reciprocate the same number of visits. These alternating guest star spots will be much shorter than the current ones.

Gobel will revise his program format for less emphasis on guest stars and production numbers and a greater concentration on the unadorned humor that characterized him in the past. Bendix Won't Visit Fisher Eddie Fisher had a guest appearance by William Bendix all set until his sponsor heard about it. The sponsor, a washing machine manufacturer, didn't want the competition to get a plug. The half-hour program will be presented on Thursday evenings.
