Chet Lemon followed with a hit to deep short, though, and Enos Cabell's single to right-center sent him to third. Tom Brookens made it 2-0 with a sharp single to left-center, moving Cabell to third. Trammell hit a liner to second baseman Julio Cruz, who juggled and dropped the ball.

Cabell scored on the error, but Cruz recovered in time for a force play on Brookens and the Tigers did no more damage. Dave Revering, who had two of the four Seattle hits through the first six innings, should have been retired leading off the seventh. But Brookens misjudged his foul pop for an error, and Revering stayed alive to. rip a double into the right field corner. When Lemon fumbled the ball Revering reached third.

Pitching coach Roger Craig went to the mound to talk with Petry, and the pitcher told him he was experiencing more of the lower back stiffness that has afflicted him in recent weeks. Larry Pashnick was summoned from the bullpen. Jim Essian chopped one toward third and Brookens charged, but the ball short-hopped off his glove for another error as Revering scored. Pashnick then walked Henderson on a full-count pitch and the runners were bunted ahead. When lefty Bruce Bochte came up to pinch-hit, manager Sparky Anderson called Pat Underwood into action.

Underwood struck out Bochte and retired pinch-hitter John Moses on a short fly ball to save the Tigers' lead. dm 3 yo 1 up, 4 furs: 3-JACK'S JEFF XI15 Looks to atone 6 MIDNIGHT 115 Look for late 2-NO NO LIZ Close filly Hill Judlce Cedeno Werre R. Perez Wade Thomas Mlnnock Lefty may be right for Tigers By BRIAN BRAGG Free Press Sports Writer SEATTLE The Tigers have' looked for a left-handed starter for the past two winters with no success. -The search is still on, but now the Tigers are focusing on their own staff. Reliever Dave Rucker, 25, will probably be given a start within a few days, according to pitching coach Roger Craig, although the competition for starting spots is keener now that the Tigers have decided to bring up two starters (Howard Bailey and Juan Ber-ienguer) from the minors.

The Tigers are no longer in contention in the AL East race, so manager Sparky Anderson and the rest of the brass are looking ahead, evaluating the existing talent and thinking of the winter trade market. "Roger and I have been kicking around the idea of starting Rucker," said Anderson. "I don't know just when, but we could use a fifth starter next Saturday after we get back home. Roger would like to see Rucker start so he could use his forkball. "I've watched him throw it on the side, and he's got a good one.

"But I'll be honest, I don't know where he fits starting, short relief or what. I don't know. I do know he's got a good arm. He'll have to show me the rest of it." Rucker, who has pitched exclusively in relief the past two years, is eager for start and a chance to use his forkball in the big leagues. "I'm really excited about a chance to start," Rucker said.

"Roger said he thinks I'd make a good one He said maybe I can be the left-handed starter Detroit has been looking for. Maybe the, left-hander has been right here under their noses all along." Morris nixes report Pitcher Jack Morris denied a published report Saturday suggesting he and his agent are asking the Tigers for a five-year contract worth $5.5 million. 1 "It's wrong," he declared. "We're not even talking about a five-year contract anymore," he said. "What we're asking for is a four-year contract plus a signing bonus." He also said the contract request does not add up to the $1.1 million a year reported in today's editions of the Detroit News. "I don't know where (the reporter) got that," he said. "It's bull--.

That's what it is, bull--. Stuff like that isn't going to help my situation any." Morris would not comment further on his contract demands, but his four-year salary request is believed to be in the neighborhood of $800,000 per year. Morris is having a sub-par season, with a 14-13 record and a 4.14 earned run average. Morris and the Tigers couldn't agree on a one-year pact following his 14-7 season in 1981, so they went to arbitration. Moss and Morris asked for $600,000 for this year and the Tigers offered $440,000.

The arbitrator chose the ball club's figure, but Morris still wound up with the highest salary of any player who lost an arbitration case. 5 Triplets called up The Tigers will call up five players from their Evansville farm club this week at the conclusion of the American Association season. Those moving to the parent club: Left-hander Howard Bailey, 24, the only surprise among the five recalls announced Saturday. Bailey had been told only a few days ago he would be reporting to the Tigers' instructional league camp at St. Petersburg on Sept.

15. He struggled earlier in the season, but has come on strong. Reliever Aurelio Lopez 33, the Tigers' top bullpenner in 1979-80 before losing effectiveness. Lopez was sent to the minors July 4, and has since compiled a 4-0 record with a 1.76 ERA for Evansville. He has allowed just 23 hits in 30 innings, with 10 walks and 29 strikeouts.

Right-handed starter Juan Beren-guer, 27, who has an 11-10 record and a 4.63 ERA. Berenguer has previously had stints with the Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals and New York Mets, compiling a disappointing 3-17 record and a 5.06 ERA. Right-handed reliever Larry Rothschild, 28, who has 10 saves for the Triplets to go with his 5-3 record and 3.67 ERA in 45 games. Rothschild was with the Tigers at the end of last season and did a good job (1.59 ERA in six games) during the unsuccessful pennant bid. Laga, 22, who slammed 34 home runs for the Triplets a club record.

Laga's batting average has slipped to .247 in recent weeks, but he still leads Evansville in RBIs with 88. Next spring Laga will be given the chance to earn the Tigers' starting first base job. Laga is a big, muscular slugger in the Jason Thompson mold a pull hitter who should be suited to Tiger Stadium's short right-field fence. lst-Clm. pace I TIMES :29 25, 59 25, 1:30 25, ST Arolana (Sattelberg) 5 Edgewood Byrd(TeTmln) 4 Scotch Bret (C.Smith) 3 Wldetrack (Gale) 9 Coal Tender (Muntz) 2 Rival Victor A.
