THEFT Lawn mower belonging to Nadine Gable, 618 Albert, taken between Beech co-founder Olive Ann Beech dies chewing about it. She wanted it done," Paul Woods, retired First National Bank in Wichita president once said of her.

Born in Waverly, Olive Ann Mellor started her aviation career almost by accident. She was looking for a job in 1924 and found work as a secretarybookkeeper at Travel Air Manufacturing a new airplane company started in Wichita by Walter Beech and Lloyd Stearman. Clyde Cessna later joined the effort. Stearman and Cessna eventually split off to form companies that became Boeing and Cessna Aircraft Co. She was so unknowledgeable about airplanes she had someone draw her a skeleton of a plane and label the parts so she could use the proper terms when writing letters for the company.

"We had lots of fun with my she said. The Beeches married in 1930, a year after Travel Air merged into -Wright, a huge conglomerate. By 1932, Walter Beech tired of working for the company that had taken over his. He and his wife founded Beech Aircraft with some of the proceeds from the sale of Travel Air. Started at the bottom of the economic depression, it took a few years for Beech Aircraft to flourish.

But in 1937 the company introduced its Model 18, which soared in popularity and was produced for 33 years. When Walter Beech took ill in 1940 and was hospitalized for almost a year, Olive Ann Beech guided the company through wartime production expansion, including arranging financing. One deal was a $50 million loan from a syndicate of 36 banks. Many observers credited her with overseeing the business side of the company while her husband filled his role as a rambunctious barnstorming pilot turned entrepreneur, salesman and aviation promoter. FROM PAGE 1 Cup of coffee a week is cheap, backers say would probably be the targets of cuts.

The increase the board wants, along with a one-mill property tax increase being implemented by the state would cost about 21 cents more a week for the owner of a $50,000 house. "That's a cup of coffee," Jones said. "I think our kids are worth it." For a year, it would mean an increase. of about $11 in property taxes. Last year's increase added almost 4 mills to the district's tax levy.

at the start of this year. That was about 40 mills less that the previous year. But only a 0.94 increase would be needed in January to double the local option. That's because the almost 4 mills will continue to raise: taxes for the last six months of this year. Jones said she understands that people are concerned about taxes being raised.

But the increase won't. be significant, she said. "And, if our schools are enriched it benefits all who own property," she said. But Jones' greatest fear isn't that people will not vote for the increase. It's that they won't vote.

"If people are not voting, they're. voting for the negative," she said. So the group will urge people to vote, she said.
