Girl, 10, mauled, killed by pack of up to 20 dogs PAOLI, Ind. (AP) A 10-yearold girl was fatally mauled by a pack of up to 20 dogs while she was riding a bicycle to her grandmother's house, police said. The mangled body of Marilyn Thacker was found Wednesday near the home of Clifford Bird in a wooded area of rural Orange County, sheriff's dispatcher Ruby Copeland said.

The girl was mauled by the pack as she rode past the Bird home, said Copeland, who is the victim's cousin. "IT'S ALL rather shocking," she said. "Mr. Bird had this large group of dogs. Some people said they didn't like children.

When the Birds were away, the dogs would advance on a child." Copeland said the girl was with her own dog and was not known to be afraid of animals. Orange County Prosecutor Arthur Dillard said he expects to file some criminal charge against Bird. "The thing that's upsetting is that the owner was apparently not in control of his dogs at the time," the prosecutor said, adding, "Those dogs were hungry." THE CHILD'S grandmother, Maggie Thacker, said everyone in the area knew about Bird's dogs but didn't think they were killers. She said the child had to pass the Bird home as she rode from her parents' house to the grandmother's house about a mile away on a two-lane, blacktop county road. Thacker said she was worried about possible charges against the Birds.

"I've known them all my life," she said. "They're good neighbors." Bird could Jackson car crash kills ex-wife of Ted Nugent Associated Press Sandra Nugent, 33, the former wife of rock singer Ted Nugent, died early Thursday at Foote Hospital West in Jackson after the car she was driving hit a tree at a Jackson intersection. Mrs. Nugent lived in Horton, near Jackson. She was divorced from Ted Nugent.

Police said Mrs. Nugent was driving south on a city street when she failed to stop at a stop sign. Her car went over a curb and struck a tree about 10 feet from the southwest corner of the intersection.
