MIDLAND Six male guards must take typing lessons as part of a $60,000 settlement won by four county jail matrons in a sex discrimination case. The matrons said they do the same work as males but get less pay, training and clothing allowances. The settlement, approved by Midland County commissioners, provides back wages for the matrons, mandates equal pay and requires male officers to complete a typing course.

Trial set in rape case EAST LANSING Seven male students have been ordered to stand trial in the alleged gang rape of a Michigan State University coed. District Judge Daniel Tschirhart released the men on personal bonds. They are accused of raping the woman in an MSU dormitory last November. On Sept. 29, Ingham County Circuit Judge James Giddings overturned Tschirhart's earlier dismissal of all charges as an abuse of discretion.

Giddings ordered the men to face third-degree criminal sexual conduct charges. 3 men charged in slaying DETROIT Three men have been charged with murder in the slaying of a police officer's father during the holdup of a west side bar Saturday night. Jack Graham, 69, was killed and his wife, Anna, 65, knocked to the floor at the Blue Bar, 5651 Livernois. They are parents of Officer Philip Graham of the 6th (McGraw) Precinct. Robert Johnson, 30, David Stewart III, 31, and Michael Stanton, 29, also face other charges, including armed robbery and using a firearm while committing a felony.

Deputies said they found the greenhouse when they went to the Lincoln Township home of Peter Pantazopeulos, 30, about an unrelated complaint. LANSING The House Agriculture Committee on Wednesday approved legislation to let the state Agriculture Department condemn and destroy 370 PCB-contaminated silos.

The state would have to reimburse farmers an estimated $5.5 million. The silos were built in the 1940s through 1960s and coated with a sealant that had PCBs, suspected carcinogens. LANSING State Attorney General Frank Kelley asked Ingham County Circuit Court on Wednesday to close a Mt. Clemens X-ray clinic for allegedly failing to meet state safety and licensing requirements. Kelley said Diagnostic Radiology Services failed to correct potentially dangerous conditions.
