From an artistic standpoint, Dan Petry's next-to-last exhibition outing Tuesday was a success. He made very few mistakes. From the practical view, however, his eight-inning, 101-pitch stint was just another loss for the young right-hander and for the Tigers, who fell to the New York Mets, 4-2. Petry is now 0-3 in spring play and the Tigers are 8-14. Petry's major mistake Tuesday was a hanging slider he threw to George Foster in the third inning.

The former Cincinnati slugger crashed it 380 feet through a strong crosswind, scoring teammate Bob Bailor ahead of him and putting the Mets ahead to stay. The Tigers' best offense was Mets center fielder Wilson, who dropped a two-out fly ball in the seventh, allowing the two Detroit runs to score. The Tigers haven't put an earned run on the board in 18 innings. Petry was quite pleased with his outing, despite the loss. He feels his arm has now gone through the customary spring training and is on its way back. "I felt strong again today," he said.

"I knew it would happen, because I blew it out the last two times and felt weak. I knew it would be coming back now. "I could've gone nine Innings today. I'm ready for the season now." BESIDES THE return of his strength, Petry was happy with his change of pace a pitch he has always needed in his repertoire. He threw the change often Tuesday, and he said the Mets got only one hit off it.

"It's at a peak right now, working good," he said. "It's sort of like a new weapon. If I'm just throwing the fastball and the slider, those are basically the same speed and the hitters can set for that speed and get the bat on the ban. "The change gives them something else to look for." Pitching coach Roger Craig noted that Petry "has worked really hard on the change this spring and is throwing it a lot more. He's a power pitcher, and, if he's just throwing fastballs and sliders that can take a toll about the seventh or eighth inning.

"His change is major league quality now, but I still, want it to get better." Petry will pitch again Saturday against the Boston Red Sox in his last exhibition turn. He is scheduled to pitch in Tiger Stadium April 8 against the Toronto Blue Jays in the second game of the regular season. Right fielder Chet Lemon pulled a muscle in his rib cage as he took extra batting practice Tuesday afternoon after leaving the exhibition game in the seventh inning. "I was hitting and I broke my bat," he explained.

"So Lance (Parrish). handed me one of his big ol' 35-ouncers and the first swing I took I pulled my cage. I waited about 10 minutes and then tried to swing again and it was still hurt." Lemon had the injury encased in ice, but he promised to be ready for the 1982 opener. "I haven't missed an opening day in six years, and I'll be darned if I'm going to miss one now," he said Manager Sparky Anderson said he has decided to bat shortstop Alan Trammell in the No. 8 position in the lineup, but he refused to explain his reasoning other than to say, "He can run." Anderson simply said: 'That's where I like him hitting." Trammell batted No.

UWS 3000 miles whicnew comes first Car slump kills PAL golf meet A Detroit golf institution, the annual Police Athletic League tournament ed and hosted by radio (WJR) personality J.P. McCarthy, has fallen victim to Detroit's auto industry slowdown. "We're a victim of the economy," said McCarthy. "We'll have a fund raiser for PAL, but it won't be a golf tournament." Although it was not generally known, the auto companies, led by Chrysler, had subsidized the appearances of most of the top names in the game since the tournament's inception in 1973. The players had "appearance" contracts with the companies.

Virtually all the top pro golfers had appeared at one time or another in the competition, usually held at Wabeek Country Club. In the last three years, however, the auto industry's ability to participate has declined sharply, according to McCarthy, and so, he said, "we're going to skip the tournament, probably for a year." "Without the support of the auto companies," he said, "the field we could attract on our own probably wouldn't attract a large enough crowd." The tournaments had raised about $1 million for Jhe PAL program, the money being lsecj- to support youth sports programs. Last year's golf competition was rained out, but the social and fundraising parts were held. On Monday, Anderson had said Dave Tobik would take the right-handed short relief job. Now Tobik's role is unclear. "I'm not going to get into how I'm going to use (Sosa)," Anderson said. "The ones that pitch the best will be the ones I use." Sosa's stats suggest he fits Anderson's primary criterion for a reliever: He throws strikes. In his last two seasons at Montreal, Sosa walked just 27 batters in 133 innings while striking out 76.

One of the best known names among several prospective Red Wing purchasers is Don Canham, the athletic director at the University of Michigan. "I'm active in two different groups" of investors seeking to buy the club, Canham said this past week. By BILL McGRAW Free Press Sports Writer Stan Aldridge says a radio report that he has bought the Red Wings is as "ridiculous" as a similar broadcast story three weeks ago. Radio station WOMC-FM aired what reporter Mark Andrews described as an exclusive story Tuesday, saying Aldridge had purchased the hockey club and that he wanted Don Cherry as coach. But Aldridge, who owns the Indian wood Golf Club in Lake Orion, emphatically denied the report, as did Lincoln Cavalieri, the Wing vice-president who is negotiating with prospective buyers.

Cherry, former coach In Boston and Colorado, said no one has iimiavti'U jinn, "I have not bought the Red Wings," Aldridge said. "I don't know how those stories get started." ALDRIDGE SAYS he has made a proposal to Cavalier! and owner Bruce Norris, who put the club publicly for sale March 9. "We're a long way away," Aldridge said Tuesday.

He declined to discuss the specifics of his offer. Aldridge said recently that the deal "Is not going to happen right away." Andrews, who also works as public address announcer in Joe Louis Arena for Red Wing games, said he received his information from a source who has been accurate in the past. "The pieces of the puzzle seemed to fit," Andrews said. "I thought I could go with the thing." Andrews said he did not talk with either Cavalieri or Aldridge before airing his report. The asking price for the Wings and two farm clubs apparently is $11., to $13 million.
