BY DAVID MCKAY Free Press Staff Writer Gordon Guyer, the Kalamazoo farm boy who rose to be interim president of Michigan State University, is the state's new agriculture chief. Agriculture commissioners Wednesday unanimously picked Guyer to succeed Bill Schuette, who called the PhD entomologist an outstanding choice. Guyer, who headed the state Department of Natural Resources for two years, retired twice from MSU, the the Governor's Office. I think I can do some positive things there." Schuette announced in January that he would return to a Midland law firm to explore a run for the state Senate. Guyer is to take over the directorship Feb.

28. Seven others had applied. But Commissioner Don Nugent said Guyer was approached by a commissioner to seek the job. The Associated Press contributed to fhis report. state's top center for agricultural teaching and research.

"I didn't accept the responsibility without a lot of thought," said Guyer, 67. "I would say, in a bit of a humorous vein, that this is my longest retirement going on five months." Guyer served as interim president at Michigan State for a year after John DiBiaggio left to become the president of Tufts University in Boston. He left that job on Oct. 1, when M. Peter McPherson took over the school's top job.

He said he is as excited about heading the Agriculture Department as he has been about any previous job. Agriculture, the state's second-largest industry, "is the glue that holds this state together," he said. "This is probably the most exciting time in Michigan agriculture," he said, because of farming's importance to the state's economy, environment and trade.
