As he later tells Warden, he would rather live like a human being than die like a gentleman. As the only American in the story, he's not exactly a noble example of unselfishness. Because of his imposture, Shears has no choice.

Geoffrey Home, as a young lieutenant, also goes along with Warden and a native guide. Drama mounts as both Nicholson and Warden overcome obstacles to accomplish their tasks. The "final curtain" belongs to Nicholson, the officer who wanted to survive with honor. In a last moment of horrified realization, he exclaims "What have I done?" before his death brings ironic justice. David Lean may win an Oscar for his undeniably skilled direction of a huge cast, performing admirably to the last man.

The madness of war has never been shown more graphically than in this Pierre Boule screenplay from his own novel, set and filmed on location in Ceylon. William Holden and Jack Hawkins costar with Guinness.

It is in effect a dissection of the military mind, in that its action is the product of the military mind at work. A mighty tragedy of cross-purposes drives the action te its highly dramatic climax. THE TONE is set by the manner in which the British Colonel Nicholson (Guinness) smartly marches his tattered troops into the compound where they will be Japanese prisoners of war. This is one of the movie's unforgettable sequences. Old-time Hollywood star Sessue Hayakawa returns to the screen as Colonel Saito, in command of the camp.

His is the supporting actor Oscar nomination. Looking on is Shears (Holden), American seaman who has posed as a Navy officer since his capture, and Maj. Clipton (James Donald), British army surgeon. Then begins an endurance contest, of body and spirit. Saito has been ordered to build a bridge over the nearby river, Kwai.

His life is at stake, since he must commit suicide if the bridge is not completed in a given time. Nicholson stands firm on the Geneva Convention that forbids the use of captured officers for manual labor. YVHEX SAITO at last frees Nicholson from torture by agreeing to his demand, it is only because the bridge must be built. Thereupon Nicholson proceeds like an officer and a gentleman to direct the building of the very best possible to the greater glory of the British army. Here the military mind becomes immersed in a project to the extent of forgetting its implications.

Here, too, it is amusing to eee how Nicholson, with lofty unconcern, virtually takes command away from Saito. Meanwhile Shears has escaped to the sea coast, barely with his life. There he is approachced by Major Warden (Hawkins), British Commando Jeader ordered to blow up the Kwai bridge. SHEARS WANTS no part of the expedition. Holden's SHOW TIME ADAMS "Raftirree 11 1:49.
