"I wanted to feel I'm actually living alive.

I wanted to lead a very challenging life that would give me satisfaction, so that I can feel" he lowers his voice into a whisper "I am alive!" Enoki doesn't describe himself as a former campus radical, but rather as a radical bureaucrat. To be sure, he is as much a product of elite Japan as any other high-ranking public servant. He was an undergraduate at the University of Tokyo, Japan's Harvard. Then he entered the even more rari-fied University of Tokyo law school, which begets almost all of the nation's top bureaucrats and politicians. Enoki is so wrapped up in politics and history that he even tells important personal stories against historical backdrops.

"For example, I wed my wife in Cairo more than 25 years ago more than 20 years ago," he corrects himself with a laugh. "My wife is very sensitive about that. And we had our first son just before the 1973 war between Arabs and Israelis." Seven years later, he was posted to the United States for the first time, as a delegate at the United Nations in New York. Enoki says he is heartened that for Villager for 24-month closed-en Red Carpet leases purchased in th One of the lest teans to lease 21531 Min Great Lakes Region for the period 992-293. In Detroit, Enoki says his role is to provide Tokyo policymakers with an accurate picture of business and to represent Japan and the local Japanese community to Americans. "From Washington, everything is politicized.

Any information from the field area of manufacturing should be different from a political city. And I wish to be a good spokesman spokesmon for Japan," says the politically savvy consul general. The consulate, which serves Michigan and Ohio, has a staff of three from Japan. Next spring, Enoki says, an official from Japan's Ministry of Transportation will join the office in Detroit. The new official's role will be to make it easier for the Big Three to export cars to Japan.

American companies, have long complained that car exports to Japan have been hampered by overly stringent safety and testing standards. In his five weeks in Detroit, Enoki has gradually become known among the state's business community. He is scheduled to meet Gov. John Engler next month. For now, the philosophical Enoki is concerned with mundane matters: choosing a permanent site for the Japanese consulate, somewhere in downtown Detroit.

Also at the top of his list is finding a house for himself, his wife Michiko "just like the name of the empress" and his son Shini-chiro, in their new hometown.
