UP works to keep water in supply ARQUETTE Besieged by cold weather-related water problems, local communities are opening public showers, offering free water and establishing hot lines for people who have frozen water lines. After nearly two months of extremely low temperatures crews are working around the clock across the Upper Peninsula to restore water service. In Marquette, an official said some customers might have to wait up to two weeks, and advised running garden hoses to neighbors' houses. In Escanaba, the city water department is receiving about 40 calls a day for pipe-thawing service. "I haven't seen anything like this in my 20 years," water superintendent Warren Isaacson said Monday.

"We were almost caught up" over the weekend. "We only had six left. This morning, we're back up to 44." In Sault Ste. Marie, crews continue to work 16 to 20 hours a day and private contractors have been brought in to assist. "The guys are getting tired," water superintendent Bud Clarke said.

Eighty homes have reported frozen lines. St. Ignace officials urged all water-sewer customers to run the taps continually. STATE Robber loses appeal in '87 gas station slaying LANSING The Michigan Court of Appeals has rejected the appeal of a man convicted of NOVAK FRANK G. Feb.
