The agreement calls for cleanup of 285 acres of industrial property owned by Chrysler and contaminated mostly with solvents and gasoline residues. Attorney General Frank Kelley said the settlement is the largest redevelopment project ever in Michigan. "The judge still has to approve it, but we don't anticipate any difficulties," said Chris De Witt, a spokesman for Kelley.

Chrysler is being required to clean up the sites to levels that the Department of Natural Resources acceptable for industrial redevelopment. That means the state will allow some contaminants to remain if removing them is considered too costly. Such limited cleanups usually involve installing a barrier such as a parking lot or clay cap to prevent people from coming in contact with contaminants. Carmen Jones and Aisha Cooper were kicked out of school after a knife brawl. Now the students are suing their schools, saying it's up to the districts to make sure they get a proper education.

In one case, a court has agreed. The lawsuits come two months before a Michigan state law takes effect, mandating expulsions for students caught bringing weapons to school. Effective Jan. 1, students in grades 6-12 who bring a gun or other dangerous weapon to school are automatically expelled for 180 days. The law has no provisions for what happens to the students after they're expelled.

"I think there's going to be a lot more of these said Ron Ciranna, assistant legal counsel for the Michigan Association of School Boards. "This has caught a lot of districts completely by surprise.
