i Former series star cast in''Centennial" f. HOLLYWOOD Clint Walker, for- star of TV's "Cheyenne" series, returns to television after a near-fatal if- skiing accident in the early 1970s that ended his career, to play a key "role in NBC-TV's 25-hour adaptation of A. Michener's best-selling novel "Centennial." Walker has been cast as Joe Bean, the riverman who befriends trapper- Pasquinel. He will join, the "Cen- cast when it moves from Colof rado to Kentucky later this month. Robert Conrad, as Pasquinel, and Richard Chamberlain, as Alexander star in the first five hours of H'the story about the settling of the West.

The Universal Studios production will be telecast in several parts on NBC during the 1978-79 season. The executive producer is John Wilder, who also wrote the screen play. Virgil Vogel is directing. Among Walker's motion pictures are "The Dirty Dozen," "The Great Bank Robbery," "Send Me No Flowers," "Sam Whiskey" and "More Dead Than Alive." Monday thru Friday "The Dain Curse" is a first-class production By JOAN HANAUER NEW YORK (UPI) "The Dain Curse" is as sharp as the brim of the borsalino James Coburn pulls down over one eye, as sleekly nostalgic as the Pierce Arrow that graces the screen and as mystifying as befits a story by Dashiell Hammett. It also is CBS' first venture into the mini-series, a form the network resisted strenuously while it sat atop the ratings race. For its maiden venture, CBS presents a blockbuster in the six-hour show that will run Monday through Wednesday at 8 p.m. The production is as handsome as the best theatrical movies, shot on location in Easton, New York City and on Shelter Island, a lovely bit of land off Long Island where New York's Gov.

Hugh Carey has his summer home. New name The story is set in 1928, based on the first of Hammett's "Continental Op" series, which originally appeared as a mystery magazine serial. The Hammett character never had a name just Continental Op but the television moviemakers gave in and made one up. The Coburn character is named Hamilton Nash, meant to sound like a scrambled version of. Dashiell Hammett.

Hammett's boss at the Dickerson National Detective Agency, however, remains only "the Old Man." The cast of the production adds class to an already first-rate production. Coburn is the star, with just the right combination of tough world-weariness and intelligent curiosity. His assignment is to investigate the diamond robbery at the Leggett home. There he meets Beatrice Straight as Alice Dain Leggett yes, definitely, she is odd, but what is she hiding? That is the question the viewer will be asking throughout because everybody is hiding something and ho one is subtle about it. Miss Addison makes a wildly attractive Gabrielle yes, she definitely is even odder than her stepmother and might be recognizable to soap opera fans of "Ryan's Hope" and "Guiding Light." It is easy to see why even a cynical detective would find himself drawn to, her, unable to drop the case that wraps her in tragedy and, eventually, suspicion of murder. Murders, mysterious doings and beautifully set-up scenes follow one after the other, as the audience meets Jason Miller as Owen Fitzstephan, a mystery writer given to gorgeous garb and bizarre interests; and Jean Simmons as Aaronia Haldorn, the monumentally self-possessed wife of a half- crazy cult leader, played by Ellis Raab.

It's the kind of cult that occupies a Manhattan townhouse and appeals strictly to wealthy dabblers in the mystical. 'Special effects in the townhouse are handled by the aptly named Tom Fink, played with sly humor by Brent Spiner. Martin Cassidy is attractive as Eric Collinson, whose love for Gabrielle puts him in jeopardy of the Dain curse, and Hector Elizondo is the sheriff of a small town where even the law enforcement officers aren't what they seem. In Dashiell Hammett, nothing is what it seems. "The Dain Curse" makes it clear why he is considered the father of the modern private eye genre the tough-guy hero faces mys-.

tery piled atop confusion, events crash into one another and always there are the secrets of the past to unravel. Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe and Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer are direct descendants of Hammett's tales in which no one is innocent, making it hard to figure out who is guilty until the hero speaks in sadly resigned tones to the murderer. The trick for the au- thor is to refrain from killing off all the suspects before the detective figures out who done it. Good details "The Dain Curse" is beautifully presented, with the kind of attention to detail seldom available on the small screen. With judicious cutting it would make a stunning theatrical movie, which is not surprising since it was produced by Martin Poll, whose "A Lion A flower for a friend Brooke Shields, 12, one of the stars of the film, "King of the Gypsies," gives Danielle Brisebois, 8, a rose at a party at New York's Regine's that marked the completion of the movie.

Danielle plays the younger version of Brooke in the film. (UPI Photo) For Your Salina Movies Fox "A History of the Beatles." Vogue Hall." Mid State Cinemas Side 1: "The Greek Tycoon."
