Debbie Stabenow held a "Detroit kickoff Monday in her campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. But the real message was to her arch-rival, former U.S. Rep.

Corey is a senior at Marian High School in Bloomfield Township but takes her debate class at Seaholm. She plans to attend Georgetown University. Two other Birmingham students both from Groves High School won prizes: Karen Schouten placed third and won a $750 scholarshio. and David $300 scholarship.

Republican Gov. John Engler has "disinvested" in the city, she said, and she promised to reverse that trend. "It's time we realize we're all one." Wolpe's campaign manager Ken Brock said his candidate has an equally impressive list of supporters from Detroit, especially among labor unions and churches.

"I think you'll see who has the strongest organization Aug. 2," he said. A spokesman for state Rep. Lynn Jondahl, D-Okemos, said Jondahl kicked off his campaign in Detroit, visits there regularly, enjoys the support of lots of Detroiters but won't have another kickoff. "We'll have our next press event in Detroit when we have something to say about an issue people care about," said James Curran.

The fourth candidate, Lansing lawyer Larry Owen, has touted himself as the only candidate with southeast Michigan roots in a field where all the contenders live in Ingham County.
