Straight, non-theatrical reporting particularly typifies the excellent ses synagogue in West Bloomfield burned down Jan. 18, the high-energy, new-look Channel 2 "Eyewitness News" fairly bludgeoned the story into submission.

Nikki Grandberry spiced her live report on the 1 1 p.m. news that day with a frankly sensationalized sion news. Moping about miserable ratings be gosh darned, TV2 and news director John Howell aim to compete. The ratings will eventually follow, they say. IN FACT, Channel 2 has already all but usurped Channel 7's title as the champ of jam-packed, Head-lines-Are-Us news.

Tedious staging, lively cast Mozart's opera "Idomeneo," which will be telecast as part of the 'Live from the Met" series on WTVS (Channel 56) at 8 tonight (simulcast on WQRS-FM, 105.1) was the composer's favorite among all his operas. It isn't my favorite I like both interview with a masked member of the Jewish Defense League. He was there to guard the synagogue after the blaze, he said, and hinted menacingly that he had an idea who set the fire. The next afternoon, anchorman Roy Weissinger led off the 5:30 early news with two more stories on the fire. Both played heavily to the arson angle, and both allowed Channel 2 to pat itself on the back by melodramatically reporting that officials BWUMIt riiko Huffy But remember, eyebrows and bluster aside, Channel 7's Bill Bonds is still the king because he is the best at what he does.

He is Detroit's grand communicator. And No. 1 Channel 7 still dominates the ratings because of its slick, corporate news style. Plus, with a two-hour block of early news, Channel 7 is producing 60 minutes more of daily news programming than its competitors. rtfrniwJ mum political coverage of Robert Pisor and the fine business news reports of Jennifer Moore and Tim Coleman.

CHANNEL 4 has been much more willing than its competitors to tackle the complex and important economic issues that plague Michigan and the nation and to lead newscasts with those often non-visual economic stories. But remember, all of us basically watch the TV news we feel most comfortable with. We respond to the style, the packaging, the personalities and the chemistry as much as we do to any notion of goodbad journalism. Being somewhat of a traditionalist, I feel most comfortable with Channel 4. But that is not to deny the considerable skills of Bonds, who is always fascinating to watch.

I love it when he gets angry and lets loose with a little righteous wrath. And Channel 2's hectic, electric light orchestra already is showing signs of positive energy with its various newscast accessories. Chuck Gaidica does a smooth, informative weather forecast. Fred McLeod has loaded up his fine sports reports with oodles of taped highlights for genuine jock junkies. So stay tuned.

The TV news battles are always fun to watch. And Channel 2 seems ready to make it a three-way war. "Don Giovanni" and "The Magic Flute" better but it does contain some glorious music. And tonight's telecast (which was taped at a live performance last November) boasts some fine singing from a stellar cast Bill Bonds That often gets overlooked. stage posing and posturing, and poor Cotrubas seems to spend half her onstage time caressing rocks.

Ponnelle's sets and costumes, on the other hand, are superb. He sets the opera among decaying ruins, incorporating an ominous face of Neptune, who precipitates the opera's tragic elements, within the facade of the ruins. Pavarotti fans are in for a special treat, since the telecast provides them with the rare opportunity to see their favorite tenor sing Mozart, a composer not usually associated with him. (Pavarotti did sing the part of Idamante in a production of "Idomeneo" at the 1974 Glyndebourne Festival, in the early part of his career.) He sings the role of Idomeneo with grace, providing a pure legato line that, while well within the confines of Mo-zartean style, also carries considerable dramatic impact. Cotrubas is an outstanding Ilia, sweet of voice and, when she isn't caressing those rocks, dramatically impressive.

She moves with an innate nobility that even Ponnelle's goofy staging can't squelch. Von Stade is effective as Idamante, although her voice takes on a metallic cast at times. Hildegard Behrens is a raspy Elettra, singing with coarse brit-tleness throughout. John Alexander makes a fine Arbace, and James Levine conducts the Met orchestra with gusto. Li .1 JtWf r.n.

A investigating the fire had asked to inspect TV2 videotape to check for clues. That night at 1 1, Channel 2 again led with the fire story as Murray Feldman covered a memorial service and interviewed congregation members on their feelings. Did Channel 2 overplay the story? Yes. Did it inject added drama into a situation that was dramatic enough all by itself? Yes. In fact, arson has been ruled out as a cause of the fire.

But with that sort of aggressive coverage, the new "Eyewitness News" is also serving notice to its competitors at Channels 7 and 4. No longer will Channel 2 be the coasting lazy boy of Detroit televi- Actually, though the show business excesses of local TV news remain, Detroit TV news generally offers more substance and better reporting than the yakety-yak freak shows called news in many cities. Part of the reason, I still believe, is the sobering influence of Channel 4's low-key, more straightforward approach to the news. Though Channel 2 aad 7 usually praise the WDIV news with faint damns regarding the dull competence of Mort Crim Channel 4 has made doing real TV that includes Lu- Partti ciano Pavarotti in the title role, Frederica Von Stade in the "pants" role of Idomeneo's son Idamante and lleana Cotrubas as Ilia, Idamante's lover. Two things have kept "Idomeneo" from gaining a place in the standard repertory: the static conventions imposed on it by the opera seria form, with its seemingly endless recitatives, and the lack of stage action.

Mozart's music, for the most part, manages to rise above these problems, but there are long stretches of tedium in the opera. Unfortunately, Jean-Pierre Pon-nelle's staging magnifies the tedium. At 16, she was a mother. When her daughter Jenny was four months old, she discovered her husband was unfaithful and she fled to her mother in France, leaving her young family in New York. This happens 12 years before the opening of "Running Out," the "GE Theater" at 9 tonight on CBS (Channel 2 in Detroit). Deborah Raffin stars as Elizabeth. The drama concerns Elizabeth's attempts to re-establish a relationship with her family in New York.

Raffin talked about the drama from her home in California. What's so special about this drama? "It's rare and very nice when 'an actress can get involved in something that she can feel strongly about particularly in television. But this is one of those very personal stories, a story of relationships. Television does that quite well. "What we've tried to do is show everyone's point of view, the girl's, the ex-husband's and, especially, the child's.

The film starts when (Elizabeth) comes back. But we set up the situation that she was a baby herself when she had to take care of a baby as well as cope with her husband's affair. She just can't handle it emotionally and she has a breakdown. Really, it's a case of both of them being too young, too immature She intends to come back but each year, the guilt becomes stronger. Finally, she is sent to New York as part of her work and she decides she has to face the past.

She has to overcome the bitterness of her daughter; her feeling of abandonment. There is curiosity about her mother. It's almost like an adopted child trying to find out about her birth mother." Do you really, think viewers will identify with these people? It isn't often a girl will leave her baby and she can't run to a place like France.
