Jimmy Demaret successfully defended his Tucson Open tournament title when he posted a record-breaking 264 to win first money in the 72-hole $10,000 event. It was 16 strokes under par for the four rounds. Demaret beat out his nearest rival and the pre-tour-nament favorite, Ben Hogan of Hershey, by three strokes, the latter finishing with 267. DEMARET, a Houston (Tex.) product now registered from Ojai, racked up a- great final round to stave off the challenges of his closest opponents. Starting the last round one stroke ahead of Hogan, Demaret hit the El Rio course for 33-3265 to clinch first prize of $2,000.

A crowd of several thousand watched the final round. Hogan turned in a final round of 67 and three-putted the last green from 15 feet.
