THE DETROIT FREE PRESS SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 1940 T7 Who? Everything Is Up to Martha Dfe with Wife Lively for Two 7 Linda with Tyrone Linda Darnell, who has Just completed the starring role In "Star Dust" at the Twentieth Ceni tury-Fox studios, has been assigned the lead opposite Tyrone Power in "The Great Commandment." Rochelle Hudson is Ford's sweetheart, to provide a dash of romance amidst the thrills. "My Little Chickadee," the merry Western in which W.

P. MacLane Back in Another Cell Movie at the Adams Is Thrilling Fare Barton MacLane who, every-time we look at the screen, is sulking in somebody's prison, nearly escaped Friday at the Adams. But they shot him just as he was getting out. Shot him good and. at the last moment, he turned out to be a pretty decent guy after all, whose confession cleared up a lot.

Just like the Westerns, prison fare has become a constant source of screen thrills. Since Gene Autry is the N6. 1 Cowhand of the nation we would like to nominate Mr. MacLane as the No. 1 Prisoner.

No prison is complete without him, nor John Lltel, who has reversed his collar this time, and is the understanding chaplain in "Men Without Souls." Litel doesn't have clear sailing in regenerating the convicts. After he foils one jail break, they incline to look on him as a stool-pigeon. He has better luck, though, in reforming Glenn Ford, a youngster who got himself sent to prison so that he could kill the brutal guard who beat his father to death. The young man, however, gets on quite a spot close to the hot seat when the guard i 12 i ff- -4f MOTION PICTURE ATTRACTIONS Jru jtimi CO TevTtfami 4mimuat I Hov jCESAJOMEROj CHARLIE RUGGLES MARTHA RAYE It all depends on her. Pooler 'And so three persona got mar-, Tied. If that sounds a little daffy Iflon't blame it on us. It is the idea behind the plot of "Too Many Husbands" which opened Friday at the Fox with "Viva Cisco Kid." Once before, as enforced reading In high school, we encountered a gal who got herself two husbands. book was Arden" and pretty dreary.

Well, there's no somber contemplation of the problem in "Too Many Husbands." This baby is designed for laughs and certainly should get them. It's as lighthearted as a kid who has kipped school and caught I. Mr. Douglas three fish. Skating lightly over what might a delicate problem, 'Too Many Husbands" extracts about all the humor that could be found in a situation where a girl finds her self with two personable husbands, see, Jean Arthur up and mar- ried Melvyn Douglas when she be.

lieved her first husband, Fred MacMurray, had been loBt at sea. Mr. Douglas was her husband's partner and had been oh so con- oiing: Drops Back for a Shave Then just as Mr. MacMurry's tame is being erased from the firm door, he comes back for a have and to call the little woman and let her know he's alive. Yoicks, what a situation! First Jean and Melvyn stammer their explanations.

And suddenly Miss Arthur, the minx, sees the full possibilities. Two husbands trying to win her favor. What's more, as she considers them she finds it increasingly difficult to decide which husband to keep. The boys sit down to decide and each has his arguments. Miss Arthur sits down to brood over the matter and the pair of husbands try to influence her verdict by Jumping over furniture and other mall-boy antics.

Her papa, elderly Henry Davenport, gets pretty mad about It, but even he isn't up to deciding which to Miss Arthur's spouse. Both husbands share a guest room. Douglas stoops to a bit of cheating when they leave it to chance. Piqued when the little woman Interviews each privately and winds up by choosing both, the boys stomp out and the police get called In to look for the two husbands. This, naturally, make them suspect bigamy and the final Terdict is up to the court.

We won't tell you whether the court decides if the reckless MacMurray or the more substantial Douglas ia the winning man. In fact, even after the legal decision Miss Arthur and the boys truck off to a ballroom to indulge In a bit of hilarious triangular dancing. It is all gay, acted up to full point by the trio of deft comedians and full of merry dialog, Adventures Continue Cesar Romero, having taken fever the role of O. Henry's dashing Cisco kid a picture ago, continues his adventuring in "Viva Cisco Kid." As usual, Chris-Pin Martin is the outlaw's faithful pal and herein gets the bulk of the comedy by being the foil for Villain Stanley Fields' practical jokes. He constantly would like to shoot himself a piece of Mr.

Shaw Although other obvious attributes may make a more general appeal, It seems to one observer, at least, that the outstanding achievement of "Rebecca," at the Michigan, is the deft direction of Alfred Hitchcock which gives the impression of the leading character, whose supposed body had been cast up by the ocean years before, being ever present without once appearing on the scene. The nearest approach to materialization comes with those portentous utterances in the prolog when from out the ether comes the malevolent voice of Rebecca de Winter, continuing the curse she put upon Manderley during her life, to pave the way for the disaster which stalks Max de Winter and his second wife, and makes the Daphne du Maimer novel a fascinating pathological ghost story.

Malign Influence Felt All through the Unfolding of the narrative you feel the malign Influence of the dead mistress of this vast manse on the living characters she has constantly at her mercy. If the emotional suspense exer- cised by "Re- becca" reaches it its greatest heights In the earlier stages of the film, where- f- in Is shown the brief period of happiness en-Joyed by Laurence Olivier, as the master of Joan Fontaine Manderley, and Joan Fontaine as his new, wife, and the descending curtain of tragedy, it ia because those Incidents, treated In faithful adherence to the book, lend themselves a bit better to dramatic development than do some of the more familiar devices used in clearing up the mystery. It is all very gripping, with no time for comedy, and it Is played to the well-known hilt by everyone Involved. In her first starring role, Joan Fontaine comes off triumphant as the paid companion who seeks surcease from an unpleasant association with a domineering female to become the second mistress of Manderley, high on the rough Cornish coast; to fall deeply in love with Olivier, and find her hoped-for happiness thwarted at every MOTION riCTURE ATTRACTIONS ,41 EXTRA LATE SHOW TONITE at 9 55 "in- T.I ainlL 1 I EXTRA LATE SHOW TtlITt fT un a lvj i ji i i lMilillli5U I xtra Added! 2Z WjUCll Harry Davenport, the Jndge In "Dr. EhrUch's Magic Bullet," will be a grandfather in May.

Teasel opens week's engagement at the Bowery on Monday night. turn by constantly intruding reminders of the past, and the shadow of tragic events that cast a lasting pall over the place. It is a sensitive, beautifully projected portrayal that hints at more good opportunities for Miss Fontaine, unless Hollywood overlooks one of its best actresses. The De Winter of Olivier Is In turn crisp and crushed, as the mood of the moment demands, a fine performance throughout of a man haunted by recollections of the tragedy in which he was a principal.

He carries on convincingly even in those moments toward the end when the plot becomes a bit diffuse. Excellent as Housekeeper Judith Anderson is the housekeeper, faithful to the memory of her dead mistress, who tortures the newcomer with references to the brilliance and beauty of her predecessor, and' altogether presents such a terrifying figure the Impulse Is to cheer when she perishes in the flames of Manderley, which she fired to complete her fiendish revenge. "Granny Get Your Gun," the accompanying feature, is a simple little tale that fairly oozes hokum of the homey sort. It is given relish chiefly by the work of veteran May Robson, still able to deliver with the, best of them. She is a gun-toting old grubstaker, in Western garb, who undertakes to straighten out the matrimonial mishaps of her granddaughter, Margot Etevtmson, and her worthless husband, Hardin Albright.

May gets all tangled up before she extricates herself, with the assistance of Harry Davenport, another fine veteran, who acta as her legal adviser and devoted suitor.
