MICHIGAN DATELINE UFO buffs cover west Michigan USKEGON UFO Michigan descending researchers southwestern this on are week after dozens of people said they saw something unusual in the night sky March 8 from Grand Rapids west to the Lake Michigan shore between Muskegon and South Haven. "It is, right now, the hottest case we have in the country," said Walter Andrus, director of the Texas-based Mutual UFO Network. What makes the case so unusual is the sightings seem to coincide with radar trackings of unexplained objects by the National Weather Service office in Muskegon, Andrus said. Holly Graves said she, her husband and 14-year-old son saw a huge, rotating globeshaped object with white and red lights, hovering just above tree level across the road from their Holland home. "What we saw was not a whole craft, but the bottom of it, turning in a clockwise motion," Graves said.

After the family called police, an officer saw lights in the distance and contacted the National Weather Service. The office in turn notified the Mutual UFO Network after tracking signals on radar. STATE Meat plant employee convicted for killing boss GRAND RAPIDS A suburban Grand Rapids man was convicted Tuesday of firstdegree murder for shooting his boss in the back at the beefpacking plant where they worked. A Kent County Circuit Court jury found LeRoy Cousineau, 53, of Wyoming guilty in the November 1992 shotgun slaying of Robert VanderBoon, 34, at the Ada Beef Co. Cousineau's attorney argued that he could not control himself due to degenerative brain disease.

But prosecutors said Cousineau was methodical and in control. He faces a mandatory life sentence when he is sentenced April 26. CITY Casino proponents file petitions for vote DETROIT Backers of a floating casino on the Detroit River turned in 15,000 signatures on petitions Tuesday to put a measure on the Aug. 2 ballot to repeal the city's ban on casinos. Supporters of a Greektown casino turned in 10,000 signatures by the end of the day Tuesday for a referendum on their project on the same ballot.

If either group falls short of the required 8,000 signatures after the petitions are checked by the city clerk, supporters would have two weeks to collect more. OAKLAND Board member recall hangs on Holly vote HOLLY Voters in the Holly Area School District are to decide Friday whether to recall four board members for voting to eliminate bus service. Michael Therriault, Tim Burns, Julie Hughes and Ron Palmgren were targeted because of their Aug. 11 vote to cut bus service to help balance the district's budget. After the recall vote, the school board will operate until the June 13 general school board election with however many members remain.

BRIEFLY LANSING Human error was blamed Tuesday for the Michigan Lottery putting out the wrong winning number in Monday's Daily 4 game. The winning numbers, 2059, were announced correctly as they were drawn. But the wrong numbers, 2057, were posted on a toll-free hot line and sent to retailers. The mistake was corrected within 15 minutes.
