IDA New Braunfels Herald Zeitung Sunday. 6 19S3 Rangers end season with win over Cole By DEBBIE DeLOACH Staff writer Winning traditions have to start somewhere. And Smithson Valley turned the corner with an 18-12 victory over Cole Friday night. "We had a tremendous team effort out there. Class.

Character. Both teams 3-6, fighting for No. 4," Ranger Coach Stan Irvine said. Catching his breath, he added, "There weren't any championships at stake just pride." It was a fight to the end Friday night. Cole took the edge on its first possession.

Quarterback Mike Usry went 18 yards around left side. The kick was wide to the right. Ranger quarterback Mike Irvine evened things up on a 16-yard pass to Chuck Neuman with 1:36 left in the first quarter. This tune, the kick was blocked. The Rangers regressed to old habits of beating themselves the second quarter.

But they weren't alone. The Cougars were dying a slow death on penalties. Both teams came out in the third quarter ready to break the tie. The Cougars drove down to the Ranger 17 where Mark Griffith tried a field goal. But the kick was short, and the tie remained.

But not for long. Quarterback Mike Irvine orchestrated an impressive 80-yard drive that ate up almost all the third quarter. The Rangers had stalled at about midfield when Cole was called on pass interference. That penalty gave the Rangers new life. Two plays later, Darren Gray, who went over 1,000 yards for the season Friday night, reached the endzone on a 29-yard burst.

The two-point pass play from Butch Hegeman to Gray fell incomplete, but the Score by quarters: Smithson Valley Cole 606 600 6-18 6-12 Smithson Valley 15 52-241 62 5-10-1 1-34 5-2 3-25 First Downs Rushes- yards Passing Yards Passes Punts Fumbles-tost Penalties yards Scoring Summary: Cole: Mike Usry 18 tun (kick Smithson Valley: Mike Irvine 16 pass to Chuck Ueuman (kick blocked). Passing Smithson Valley: Hastings 3-7-1; Irvine 2-20; Hegeman 0-1-0. Receiving Smithson Valley: Chuck Neuman 1-16; Hegeman 4-46 Rangers went ahead, 12-6. Four plays into the fourth period, the crowd moaned. Gray had fumbled on the handoff on his own 7, and Cougar Tommy Vickers was at the right place at the right time. Usry went in from the 1 with 9:01 left in the game.

But the PAT kick never got off the ground, and the score stayed 12-12. Two seconds later, Gray who had 236 yards for the night and 1,020 for the season had fumbled again. This time, Cougar Mike Yates was there. The Ranger defense rose to the occasion. A clipping penalty and a quarterback sack cut the optimism from the Cougars quick.

Inspired, the Ranger offense put on another show, going 80 yards in 13 plays to score the winning touchdown. Gray got the honors on a 9-yard run. Jeff Hastings PAT pass to Hegeman was incomplete. The Cougars still had 49 seconds to do something. But a pass picked off by Ranger Ronnie Rigdon put the game on ice, and ended the 1983 football season.

"By winning this one and playing as well as we did, I'd definitely call 1983 a successful season," Irvine said. "We played five teams ranked in the top 30 out of 210 3- A teams. That's not a soft schedule, especially starting eight sophomores." The victory over Cole gave Smithson Valley a "winning season," Irvine said. "Just going out on the field and legitimately beating someone, we've tied the school record tonight with four wins. In the years teams went or 5-4-1, there were forfeits, and I don't count those." Team effort was at the heart of the victory over Cole.

The Rangers had over 300 yards total offense for the second time this year, and at the heart of that effort were 18 seniors who were playing high school football for the last time. "We've got 11 lettermen coming back next year eight sophomores and three juniors and all started during the 1983 season. Our freshmen team went 6-2, our junior varsity went 6-1-2, so the total program is there. "But to build a winning tradition, you've got to turn the corner," Irvine said, "and that's what we did tonight. These kids can look at themselves and believe without a lot of hoopla from me.

"Boy, I'm talking like we've won a championship or something. All we did was win a game, but it was just as important as a championship to the future of our program," he added. Darren Gray heads out after a handoff from Mike Irvine (17) Stall pholn hy Cinity Richardson Texas nips Houston; Baylor edges Hogs HOUSTON (AP) Texas kicker Jeff Ward booted field goals of 20, 51 and 47 yards, the last with 4:37 left to play, and the No. 2 ranked Ixmghorn's defense overcame Houston's determined upset bid Saturday to defeat the Cougars 9-3 in a Southwest Conference showdown. Texas' defense, ranked first in the nation in total defense, came up with four Houston turnovers while the Longhorn offense struggled throughout the game recording zero or minus yardage on seven of its first 12 drives prior to a late fourth quarter drive.

The Longhorns, 8-0, did not get a first down in the second half until 9:40 remained in the game. The Longhorns ended that drive with Ward's third field goal; a 47-yarder for a 9-3 lead. Houston kicker Mike Clendenen missed field goal attempts of 39 and 29 yards in the first and fourth quarters as the Cougars dropped to a 3-6 record. Texas took a 6-0 halftime lead on Jeff Ward's field goals of 20 and 51 yards as the Cougars continued to hurt themselves with mistakes. Mossy Cade's 56 yard interception return to the Houston 4 and a 2-yard face mask penalty set up Ward's 20- yarder in the first quarter.

A 35-yard pass interference call against UH free safety Robert Jones was the big gainer prior to Ward's 51- yarder in the second quarter. But Texas' ineffective offense couldn't take full advantage of the gifts and had gained only 38 yards at the half. It was the second straight slow start for the Longhorns, who trailed Texas Tech 3-0 a week ago at the half before winning 20-3. After Cade's interception, Houston's aroused defense stopped Texas for a minus one yard on three plays. Texas safety Jerry Gray recovered a fumble by quarterback Gerald Landry at the Houston 24 to start a late second quarter Longhorns drive that went for a minus 25 yards.

The drive ended when UH's Eugene Lockhard sacked Todd Dodge for an 11-yard loss. Texas now is 5-0 in SWC games and Houston dropped to 2-4. Baylor 24, Arkansas 21 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) Marty Jimmerson kicked a 24-yard field goal on the final play of the game to give Baylor a 24-21 Southwest Conference victory over Arkansas on Saturday. Despite an all-out blitz Cody Carlson completed a 33-yard pass to Bruce Davis to set up Jimmerson's field goal.

quarter but his 31-yard attempt was low and blocked and his 50-yard attempt with 40 seconds left never had a chance. After the second miss, Baylor started from its 33 and Carlson hit passes of 17 yards to Gerald McNeil and 13 yards to Broderick Sargent to get the drive going. Baylor took a 14-0 lead on drives of 99 yards in 14 plays and 89 yards in 16 plays. Carl Miller's 100-yard kickoff return and an 80-yard drive that ended nine seconds before the half made it 14-14 at the end of the second quarter. Arkansas went 69 yards with its first possession of the third quarter and Baylor came right back with a 90- yard drive on 13 plays.

Allen Rice, the fullback-quarterback, ended that on a 1-yard sneak with 5:40 left in the third quarter. The extra point was the 42nd point in less than 25 minutes of playing time. Baylor is 6-2-1 and Arkansas is 5-3. SMU 20, Rice 6 IRVING (AP) Jeff Atkins dashed 56 yards to setup a touchdown, scored two more and ground out 218 yards Saturday to carry the No. 8 ranked Southern Methodist Mustangs to a hard-earned 20-6 Southwest Conference homecoming victory over the Rice Owls.

With scouts from the Bluebonnet, Citrus, Sun and Liberty Bowls watching, Rice battled SMU to a 6-6 tie through three quarters, intercepting SMU quarterback Lance Mcllhenny four times. Atkins, a freshman from Fort Worth, ran 56 yards down the right sideline and five plays later Mcllhenny flipped a one-yard scoring pass to tight end Rickey Bolden for the go-ahead fourth period score. Dwayne Anderson's interception of a Phillip Money pass at the Rice 33 positioned Atkins for consecutive runs of 11 and 22 yards that finally put the Owls away with 6:45 to play. Atkins' total, fashioned on 20 carries, was the third best in SMU history and the most ever by a freshman. SMU's other tailback, Reggie Dupard, carved out a career best 172 yards on 29 carries as the Mustangs finally wore down the depth-thin Owls.

The combined total of 390 yards by Atkins and Dupard surpassed a school record of 347 by Eric Dickerson and Craig James. SMU is 7-1 overall and 4-1 in SWC play, a game behind Texas. Rice is 1-9 and 0-7 in league The Owls took a 3-0 second quarter lead on the longest field goal in the school's history, a 55-yarder by sophomore James Hamrick that just cleared the crossbar. It came with 1:38 left in the half and broke the school mark of 53 yards set last season by Joel Baxter. The stung Mustangs surged 80 yards in just four plays to score 65 seconds later to take a 6-3 halftime lead.

Atkins ran for 9 and 10 yards then Dupard ripped off a 60-yard gallop to the Owl one-yard line. Atkins bulled across for the score on the next play with 33 seconds left in the half. Hamrick kicked a 34-yard field goal to tie the game 6-all in the third period before SMU finally broke loose. TCU 10, Texas Tech 10 LUBBOCK (AP)- Texas Tech's Leonard Harris returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown Saturday as the Red Raiders battled Texas Christian to a 10-10 tie the third standoff between the two Southwest Conference teams in five years. Harris, a split end, also ran back another punt 50 yards in the fourth quarter but Ricky Gann's field goal attempt from the 30 sailed wide to the right.

TCU's Ken Ozee missed a 49-yard field goal attempt with seven seconds remaining. The deadlock left Tech at 3-1-1 in SWC play and erased the Raiders' slim hopes for a share of the conference title. They are 3-4-1 for the year. TCU, now 1-6-2 and 1-4-1, played catch-up throughout the damp, chilly afternoon, overcoming 7-0 and 10-7 deficits. Harris' punt return staked the Raiders to a 7-0 lead in the second period but TCU's Egypy Allen quickly squared the count with a 47-yard rim through the heart of the Texas Tech defense.

Gann, who missed a 48-yard field goal attempt earlier, kicked a 43- yarder with 22 seconds left in the first half. The Horned Frogs used a 63-yard pass from quarterback Anthony Gulley to James Calhoun to trigger a weird series of events that culminated in Ozee's tying field goal with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter. Just seconds after the pass play, Gulley fumbled and Brad White recovered for Tech at the Raider 13. On the next play, I-back Robert Lewis fumbled and TCU's Kent Trammel fell on the ball at the 14. Safety Rusty Roark broke through to spill alternate TCU quarterback Anthony Sciaraffa on a third-down pass play and the Frogs had to settle for Ozee's field goal that turned out to be the tying points.
