Eastern DT Michigan '65 "are back and bigger and stronger," said Bo. "Last year we were too small." LINEBACKERS: Senior Mike Boren, the enthusiastic native of Columbus, Ohio, returns to his inside from which he not only makes tackles but inspires the team. other inside linebacker is Mike Mallory, who is slated to replace Paul Glrgash, unless sophomore Mike Reln-hold wins the job. Robert Thompson is gone from one outside position. Carlton Rose and Tom Hassell could be starters.

Also listed high on the depth chart is senior Rodney Lyles. Freshman inside linebacker John Balourdos Injured a knee In a workout this week. That injury could force the Wolverines to red-shirt him this season. DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD: Safety Keith Bostlc is gone, as are cornerbacks Jerry Burgel and Marion Body. Only starter returning is Evan Cooper, the free safety.

Jeff Cohen, a fifth-year senior, will get a chance at Bostic's job. Senior Rich Hewlett, the former quarterback, gets a chance to win a comerback position. John Lott is listed at one cornerback (he's an experienced senior). Unless he decides to quit the team or school or change schools again, Brad Cochran will return to the defensive backfield, probably at a corner. QUARTERBACK: Senior Steve Smith has first shot at the position after two years as a starter.

As he comes back from Rose Bowl shoulder injury, the job is his to keep or to lose. Dave Hall, the senior backup, encouraged both himself and others as Smith's replacement in a losing role last; New Year's Day. Third-stringer Jim Harbaugh, the anxious sophomore, has a high school reputation as a slick California passer. His father, Jack, is head coach at Western Michigan following a stint as a Schembechler assistant. Young Harbaugh may play a noticeable role as soon as this season.

RUNNING BACKS: "We'll have a tailback," Schembechler announces, but who will it be to replace Larry Ricks? Depth chart lists senior Kerry Smith, sophomore Ben Logue, junior Rick Rogers and junior Brian Mercer, In that order. Coaches around the league like Iowa's Hayden Fry say It doesn't matter what name, number, race, creed, colpr, rank or serial number, Michigan always has a good tailback and a good ground game. Thomas Wllcher might be back from a knee injury he suffered running track last year by mid-season. At fullback, Schembechler claims "tremendous depth" with sophomore Eddie Garrett, senior Greg Armstrong, senior Jerald Ingram and sophomores Bob Perryman and Dan Rice. Often, in Schem- KICKING GAME: Punting should be fine, Schembechler says, with the return of senior Don Bracken.

Last year, Bracken averaged 39.1 yards per attempt and oppositions averaged only 2.9 yards per return. At the placekicking position, it will be difficult to replace All HaJI-Shaikh. Candidates will be Pat Moons, Todd Schlopy, Mike Melnyk and Bob Bergeron. "In spring ball," Schembechler said, "no one kind of jumped out of there and took the position. One will have to grab that position and do a job with It." In the Early Schembechler Era the Wolverines were burned by lack of attention to this crucial position.

Under the reign of Haji-Sheikh, it became a moot issue. The defense LINE: "What we worry about," Schembechler says, "is our own ability to stop the run. Because we work against the pass so much, you don't have as much time to prepare for the run because you have to defend against passes now 40 to 45 times a game." Bo suffered a blow last weekend when tackle Mike Hammersteln broke his hand during a workout. He'll be out indefinitely. Dave Meredith or Vlnce DeFellce will replace Hammerstein.

The other two interior linemen, tackle Kevin Brooko and nose guard Al Slnclch, wwm trot j5S bechler's fullback competitions, he who blocks best plays first. OFFENSIVE LINE: Key returning players here are center Tom Dlxon and quick-side guard Stefan Humphries, big guys and seniors, both expected to keep things under control In the middle of the line. Schembechler thinks Dixon is the best in the league and he praises Humphries as much for his mind (3.76 GPA in medical engineering) as for his body work. Art Balourdos is listed as the guard on the strong side, with Jerry Diorlo behind him. The battle at strong tackle is being fought by Clay Miller and Mark Hammersteln.

Doug James and Dan Yarano, both seniors, are listed at quick tackle. RECEIVERS: Replacing Anthony Carter as flanker will be either Gllvannl or Steve Johnson, both sophomores. Vlnce Bean returns for a senior season on the other side. Replacing Craig Dunaway at tight end will be either Sim Nelson, a junior, Milt Carthens, a senior, or junior Eric Kattus.
