Signing up for volunteer activities and playing politically correct versions of carnival games designed to promote "The Big Help-a-thon," the youngsters helped give a positive view of helping, organizers said.

"I have problems of my own," said Diego Sandoval, a Burbank 10-year-old who; attended the telethon with classmates from Walt Disney Elementary School. "But I want to solve other people's problems." The scene, televised live across the nation on Nickelodeon cable, inspired more than 4 million viewers to pledge 31 million hours of their time to fulfill the Big Help's motto: "Clean, fix, share, give, do, visit, care." "It's a wonderful statement about kids," said Herb Scannell, Nickelodeon's senior vice-president of programming. "They like to help people," he added. Participants in the day-long telethon are supposed to begin to honor their pledges Oct. 15, which Nickelodeon has designated as "The Big Help Day." In five target cities Boston, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Antonio and Santa Barbara Nickelodeon will link up tfewers with volunteer opportunities.

Outside those areas, kids will be on their own when it comes to figuring out how to honor their pledges. To help these viewers, Nickelodeon has been showing public service announcements for service groups that cater to the drive's target audience ages 6-12.
