And so what if the two teams combined to commit a Peach Bowl record 14 turnovers (seven each) and that the Wolfpack led 28 3 five minutes into the second quarter and score again To those outside the NC State locker room it might have seemed significant thatthe recently arthroscoped knee of quarterback made him as well as many of his 51 passes wobble in the rain 428 passing yards a Peach record were offset by his career high four interceptions The same applies to the muffed opening kickoff by Chet Davis a junior whose parents reportedly were here from New Jersey to see him play for the first time fumble was recovered on the Iowa 3 yard line by the Wolfpack who cashed in for a quick seven and Hayden ry 37 years a coach described blunder as most disheartening thing I have ever experienced as a football Toss all of that out Indeed to hear the Wolfpack (8 3 1) tell it this game was won solely for and by Sheridan who turned down the Georgia coaching offer eight days ago The Wolfpack seniors gave Sheridan the game ball after the game and they said the coach shed a few tears amidst the locker room hugs saw something in us that other peo ple see He believes in this pro said senior Little Blue Plenty of Gray Nothing Classic Rarely a stranger football game have I seen and I have seen scoreless ties and I have seen games played in snowstorms and zero weather and I have seen a team whip up on another team by 80 points This one ran longer than the Arab Israeli War It began in the murk and gloom and fog and creepy chill and later worked its way into a steady rain It was a kind of game on a kind of day on which Grantland Rice the grand old sport laureate would have felt his muses pushed to the extreme against a blue gray December would have been perfect for an opener Except there was little blue and lots of gray and nothing classic about this one as on that historic day of the creation of the It began at the beginning if that makes sense The first kickoff was fumbled recovered on the 3 yard line and converted into a swift touchdown With eight seconds left the last pass was thrown and the last touchdown scored Stadium Not the Culprit This Time i After 3 hours and 34 minutes the 21st Peach Bowl game had been played North Carolina State had beaten Iowa 28 23 and a scientist was needed to sort out all the bits and pieces and put them together again Humpty Dumpty would have been a piece of cake by comparison The two teams fumbled the ball 12 times State lost five Iowa three State intercepted the ball four times Iowa two That comes out to 14 turnovers which may be a world record Nobody knows They put the blame on the poor browbeaten Atlanta Stadium surface this time The field had grown some hair on its chest and it survived the thumping without serious injury No mud wrestling this irst place the ball spent so much time in the air but take a closer look at some interesting quarterback ing one quarterback who throws 51 passes and completes 30 for 428 yards and three touchdowns And on one leg another quarterback who comes in like a bullpen specialist every third down Soon as he runs his play trots off the field Barely hangs around long enough to see how the play came out He throws 10 passes completes seven for 152 yards and one touchdown Him they vote the leading offensive player of the day Third Down Heisman Candidate The first guy was a Heisman Trophy candidate Chuck Hartlieb came to Iowa from Woodstock Ill and was playing his final game A knee was injured the fourth game of the season and he has been hobbling around in a brace ever since Surgeons explored the hinge in late November and Iowa had tried to keep it quiet His limp told on him He had thrown only nine interceptions in 12 games One stretch he threw 144 passes 'without an interception He threw four in the Peach Bowl The second quarterback has a name right out of an old Alan Ladd movie title Shane Montgomery of NC State He is a junior from Newark Ohio Dick designated passing quarterback If there was a Third down Heisman Trophy Shane would be the leading candidate Charley Davenport starts and runs two plays then Montgomery comes on BiSJIER Continued on SB og Woods
