Gibson's fourth homer of the year came minutes after a vicious brawl which ended with two players from each team ejected. Gibson gestured derisively at the Twins' dugout as he crossed the plate.

Winning pitcher was Dave Rozema, who couldn't take a bow because he was in the Tiger clubhouse being treated for an injury to his left knee suffered during the llth-inning fight. Loser Ron Davis set off that brawl the second of the night after giving up a single to Lynn Jones. Davis threw an inside pitch to Enos Cabell, who charged the mound. Both benches emptied, and Tigers Cabell and Richie Hebner and Twins Davis and Jesus Vega were ejected. Terry Felton replaced Davis and retired pinch-hitter Tom Brookens for the second out.

Gibson's towering homer into the center field seats, his fifth hit in six at-bats, ended the game. THE TWINS scored first, getting two runs in the second inning after shortstop Mark DeJohn made two mistakes. DeJohn, subbing for Alan Trammell, went behind second base for Tom Brunansky's ground ball, but bounced his throw into the Twins' dugout, putting Brunansky a second. After Tiger starter Dan Petry issued a walk, John Castino bounced one over the mound. DeJohn fielded it near second base and relayed to finst to retire Castino.

But the runner at second was ruled safe by umpire Lou DiMuro, allowing Brunansky to score and prompting two arguments. Tiger manager Sparky Anderson debated the ruling at second, while Twins manager Billy Gardner stormed so strongly at ump Larry Barnett over the out at first base that he was ejected. Petry then served up successive singles to Ron Washington and Tim Laudner to bring home the second run. The Tigers got one run back in the third after Twins starter Pete Redfern walked Chet Lemon. Gibson's one-out single sent Lemon sliding into third, and it appeared he might have been tagged out when he momentarily lost contact with the bag.

But umpire Durwood Merrill called him safe, and that triggered an outburst from Twins coach Jim Lemon, which got the acting manager ejected. Mike Ivie brought home the run with a sacrifice fly. The Tigers tied it in the fourth. Lance Parrish led off with a long double and was bunted to third. With the Minnesota infield drawn in, DeJohn spanked a ground ball into center field to score Parrish.

Redfern then hit Lemon with a pitch, setting off the game's first scuffle. Lemon was ejected and Redfern left with a minor injury, to be replaced by Bobby Castillo. The Tigers got only one man to scoring position against Castillo until the ninth, when two-out singles by Gibson and Ivie put runners at the corners. But Davis was summoned from the bullpen to retire Hebner on a fly ball to send the game to extra innings. ATLANTA 2, St.

Louis 1: Biff Pocoroba hit a solo homer with two out in the ninth inning, giving the Braves the win. Pocoroba's first homer of the season came off loser Doug Bair (3-1) and made a winner of Gene Garber (4-1) Garber pitched one inning in relief of starter Phil Niekro, who allowed only five hits in eight innings. The Cardinals tied the score at 1-1 in the ninth when Lonnie Smith singled, stole second, went Rozema hurts knee in 2d brawl Tigers, at home: 10-4; Tigers on the road: 9-8. Tigers last year: 15-16, 6th place. FRIDAY'S RESULTS DETROIT 4, Minnesota 2, 11 innings.

TEXAS 4, Toronto 3: Doug Flynn's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 1 1th inning won the game for Texas. Texas loaded the bases with no outs in the 1 1th on Larry Parrish's walk, Pat Putnam's double and Leon Roberts' intentional walk. After Bobby Johnson popped out, Flynn hit his game-winning fly to right off Roy Lee Jackson. Hosken Powell's pinch-hit double and Ernie Whitt's pinch-hit single in the ninth gave Toronto a 3-2 lead, but Texas tied the score in their half of the inning on singles by Parrish, Roberts and Flynn. Milwaukee 2, CHICAG0 1: Gorman Thomas hit two homers and Rollie Fingers picked up his seventh save, enabling the Brewers to snap a four-game losing streak.

Thomas belted his first homer in the second inning into the left field stands off loser Richard Dotson (2-4) In the fourth, Dotson brushed back the Brewer center fielder, who came back to knock a 3-2 pitch over the left field bleachers for his sixth homer of the year. Fingers relieved Jim Slaton (3-0) in the seventh inning with two out and a runner on third and got Greg Luzinski to bounce back to the mound to end the threat. CALIFORNIA 5, Cleveland 2: The Angels' Bobby Grich delivered a two-out, tie-breaking single in the fifth inning and saved two runs with his clutch fielding in the seventh. Grich's single up the middle in the fifth drove in Brian Downing, aboard on a double, with two outs to break a 2-2 deadlock. In the Indians' seventh, with runners on second and third and two out, the Angel infielder went deep behind second base to snare1 Toby Harrah's grounder and threw the Cleveland third baseman out at first.

The key defensive play made a winner of Bruce Kison (2-0) Boston at Kansas City, postponed, rain. New York at Oakland, incomplete. Baltimore at Seattle, incomplete. to third on a bunt single by Ozzie Smith and scored on a sacrifice fly by Keith Hernandez. The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning on a solo homer by Rafael Ramirez off Cards starter Joaquin Andujar.

Lot Angeles 4, NEW YORK 1: Fernando Valenzuela scattered seven hits and knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and Dusty Baker hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, enabling the Dodgers to snap a four-game losing streak. The Dodger triumph snapped a four-game winning streak by the Mets. Valenzuela (5-3) struck out six and walked one in pitching his fourth complete game of the year and raising his lifetime record over the Mets to 3-0. In absorbing the loss, Met starter Randy Jones pitched the first eight innings, dropping his record to 4-2. PITTSBURGH 8, Cincinnati 7: Lee Lacy's three-run, eighth-inning single, which would have been a grand slam except for a base running mistake, lifted the Pirates.

Lacy's shot off reliever Tom Hume with the bases loaded and none out cleared the right center field fence for an apparent grand slam, but Lacy passed teammate Omar Moreno circling the bases and was called out, turning the hit into a single. Enrique Romo (3-1) picked up the victory in two innings of relief work. Kent Tekulve finished the game and earned his fourth save. Jim Kern (0-3) took the loss after loading the bases prior to Hume's appearance. MONTREAL 8, San Diego 7: Andre Dawson's two-run smgie capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning for the Expos.

Trailing 7-5, Tim Wallach started the Expos' eighth when he reached second on Padres third baseman Luis Salazar's two-base throwing error which eventually made all the runs unearned. Dan Normari's fly advanced Wallach to third, and one out later, Terry Francona singled off loser Eric Show (3-1) for the first run. Tim Raines followed with a single and reliever Gary Lucas replaced Show by walking Warren Cromartie, loading the bases for Dawson's heroics. Tom Gorman, the fifth Montreal pitcher, gained his first major league victory. Chicago 8, HOUSTON 3: Doubles by Bump Wills, Bill Buckner and Gary and a triple by Larry Bowa fueled a five-run sixth in-.

ning that carried the Cubs past the Astrost. Wills and Buckner doubled with one out to break a scoreless tie in the sixth, and Woods slammed a two-bagger to right-center after Keith Moreland was Intentionally walked, making it 2-0. Jody Davis knocked in Moreland with a sacrifice fly to left. Bowa's triple to the right field corner and a single up the middle by Ryne Sandberg gave the Astros a 5-0 lead. PHILADELPHIA 2, San Francisco 0: Steve Carlton pitched a no-hitter for 7 2-3 innings before settling for a two-hitter, pitching the Phillies to their 1 1th triumph in their last 12 games.

Carlton (4-5) had his no-hit bid snapped by rookie catcher Bob Brenley, playing his first game of the year, with two out in theeighth inning. Brenley hit a clean single to left field on a 2-0 pitch. John LeMaster followed with another single but pinch-hitter Duane Kuiper lined to second base to end the inning. The Phillies got the deciding run in the first inning off Denny Gale (1-3) With two out, Mike Schmidt lined a double to left center and scored when Gary Matthews ripped a shot off Gale's leg which rebounded to the third base dugout for an RBI double. today's games and probable pitchers 1982 overal statistics 1981 statistics vs opp Tim w-i wis in w-i mis today's games and probable pitchers 1982 overal statistics wl IP HITS ERA 1981 statistics vs opp H-L HITS ERA Tim 1 38 35 4.02 2 41 37 3.54 1-2 21 17 2.56 20 17 11 0.00 Havens (L) WUcoi (R) at DET 2:15 "I'm not saying he was throwing at somebody," said the Tiger slugger.

"But he'd just better find some Manager Sparky Anderson, who had his busiest night of the year trying to keep his men out of war, blamed the umpiring crew for the llth-inning explosion. It could have been avoided, he said, if they had ejected Davis for a lOth-in-ning pitch at Larry Herndon's jaw. "Herndon comes up and gets two strikes on him and that guy throws the ball up on his head," said Anderson. "Right then he should have been ejected. The umpires told both sides after the first one (Lemon vs.

Redfern,) that any more beanballs, and you're gone. "Well, they laid the rules down and they've got to enforce 'em. You don't let 'em throw a pitch there not at the coconut. No, sir. "In the first fight, Davis and Herndon had squared off, and then he gets up and throws one right at the coconut." The umpiring crew of Mike Reilly (plate), Larry Barnett, Lou DiMuro and Durwood Merrill locked themselves in their room after the game and refused to talk to reporters while they prepared a multitude of reports to the American League office.

They had a wild night of it. Minnesota manager Billy Garnder and Twins coach Jim Lemon had been ejected earlier in the game even before the Chet Lemon-Redfern fight. Chet Lemon was tossed out for that one, and Cabell, Davis, Hebner and Vega were thumbed for their actions in the final explosion. Gardner also blamed the umpires, but he placecTa different emphasis on things. "I thought Cabell, Herndon and Lemon were wrong.lhe said.

"If you can't pitch inside to them, what are you going to do? They're all over the plate." Davis, who was a New York Yankee until last month, insisted he had no evil intent in the Cabell incident, even though he waved his arms as if to invite trouble after Cabell went down. "Why would I throw at someone with a 1-and-l count? I didn't signal him to come on out at me, I signaled that it was a foul ball. "And I didn't throw at Herndon. If they can't handle a ball inside, that's their fault. They're hanging all over the plate." Davis said someone (he thinks it was reliever Elias Sosa) "took a cheap shot at me in the first fight I hope he hurt his hand on my head." Several of the Twins expressed concern about the continuation of the series this afternoon.

They mentioned that Milt Wilcox will be the Tigers' starting pitcher. Wilcox, as baseball fans recall, is not known for his reluctance to throw inside pitches some even call him a headhunter. I told Davis, 'You throw 95 miles an hour and you're throwing at somebody's head? That's "Then that Vega, he had five of their guys between us, he jumps over and takes a sucker punch, and he got me." VEGA'S LONG-RANGE shot started the biggest uproar of the night. Richie Hebner, who was grazed by Vega's punch as he stood near Gibson, "went berserk," he admitted.

Hebner, an amateur hockey player, attacked Vega and the reserve Minnesota infielder went down. Hebner piled on top of him and began landing punch after punch while Gibson, a former football ail-American, had to be restrained by a half-dozen Twins and Tigers. Then another close-range shootout between Cabell and Davis began as the umpires were distracted by the Hebner-Vega duel. Finally the fighters were separated, but Hebner did not cool off. "I got in a couple of good shots," said Hebner.

"I don't think I would have slept tonight if I hadn't. Man, I thought it was all over and I was about to walk away when (Vega) came over with that right hook and just grazed me. "I went berserk. "This is the last club I thought we would get into a fight with. I mean, they're a young club, just getting their feet wet.

I bet they don't even know what happened. If it was the Yankees or the White Sox, I could understand. But the Minnesota Twins? You'd never think we'd have trouble with them." Hebner added that the brawl "was the best I've seen in 14 years in this game." Gibson, saddened by the injury to his close friend Rozema, was proud that the Tigers won the game after the brawl. "Everybody was battling for everybody, and we won it together, that's the important thing," he said. "That fighting out there, that's part of the game and it's not something you want to get into very often, but we did what we felt was right." Gibson who promised on-deck man Mike Ivie that he was "going to win this mother right now" when he went to the plate moments after the brawl, gestured angrily and derisively at the Twins dugout as he crossed the plate with the final run.

And he publicly vowed revenge on Vega. "I will get Vega," he promised. "I will get him some day. It might be tomorrow or it might be five years from now, 10 years from now, but I will get him "I have some aggression to take out on him. I think he is very gutless to sucker somebody like he did Tell him to take his puff gloves off." Gibson also had angry words for Davis.
