More action in the news wars, i Channel 50 (WKBD) has just signed a deal with television's Captain Outrageous, Ted Turner, to carry Turner's Cable News Network 2 service starting this October. But Ted Turner is the sort of player who makes any game interesting. And watching his continuing battle with the networks should be fascinating. ETC. Former Channel 2 reporter Charlie Cain has returned to the Detroit News, where he worked before getting into the grisly business known as TV news When's the last time you saw a TV editorial that was actually tough and substantial? Channel 50 will drop the half-hour Independent Network News it has been carrying at 10 p.m.

Channel 50 will do a six-minute local news update about halfway through the nightly hour of CNN2. Byron McGregor will anchor those updates, as he has been doing on the Independent Network News. And WKBD is hiring a small technical crew to produce one or two local stories each night for that mini-newscast. Over the past couple of years, Channel 50 management has contemplated restarting a fully-staffed news department to do local news. But the miserable economy has put those expensive plans on hold.

"The timing is just not right," Castleman said. Channel 50 bowed out of local news about 10 years ago. Of course, if CNN2 really takes off with the public, Channel 50 may decide otherwise. While rumors of his shaky financial shape circulate regularly, Turner has been aggressively peddling CNN2 to standard, non-cable TV stations. He is hoping to have 100 affiliates by fall.

All sorts of trysts are arranged un-; der the moonlight by the babbling; brook, but everybody seems to be showing up at once, which provides most of the comic scenes. THE MOVIE is a disappointment in; many ways.

Allen has taken himself out of the center of the story, sharing' screen time equally with the others, and that dilutes his point of view. There are no scenes in which he steps aside to' discuss a point with his audience, no clever flashbacks to childhood no funny voice-over narration. And Allen, who has worked with' cinematographer Gordon Willis to ere- ate some of the most visually stylized films of recent years, seems overly concerned with the look here. Every frame of film is gorgeously lighted, andU the woodsy landscapes go tone and hue with the all-Mendelssohn score. Still, it is unmistakably a Woody Allen movie, and that makes it inher--v ently better than something that would be, say, unmistakably Blake After seeing it last week, I started to rank the comedies Allen has directed by order of personal appreciation.

"Mid-; summer Night's Sex Comedy" didn't break the top five: 1) "Annie Hall," 2) 2 "Manhattan," 3) The sperm sequence of "Everything You Always Wanted to" Know About Sex," 4) "Sleeper" and 5) "Take the Money and Run." But even a so-so Woody Allen movie is a fair bet for a midsummer night out "The Eye Creature9" (1965) John Ashley, Cyrv 12:00 thia Hull. Dr. Carson considers a lucrative private prac 7:30 but down deep there the sense that I going to be esoteric or anti-religious or far-out I make them nervous in some way." I can't explain it, either. With the exception of "Interiors" and "Stardust Memories" the first a dark and humorless family melodrama, the second a whiny comedy about a film director who rejects his successes (and his fans) all of Allen's films have been roaringly funny.

"A MIDSUMMER Night's Sex Comedy," one of two Allen comedies being released this year (the other opens at Christmas), is a pastoral romp in which three couples spend a confused weekend together in 1906 New England It's an ensemble film played more for whimsy and gentility than convulsive laughs, and though Allen insists its underlying themes are the same as those of "Stardust Memories," no one's going to get a migraine trying to figure them out. Those themes deal with the unreasonable quest for the perfect if mance, the unanswerable question of life after death, and the unhealthy obsession with failed opportunities. Look for them if you want, or sit back and enjoy. ALLEN PLAYS a New York stock broker who spends his spare hours inventing things like the metaphysical globe, which projects romantic fantasies, and trying to start a fire in his frigid wife (Mary Steenburgen). In for a weekend are his wife's cousin (Jose Ferrer), who's a pedantic behavioral scientist, his fiance (Mia Farrow), Allen's best friend (Tony Roberts), who's a lecherous physician, and the eager young nurse (Julie Hagerty) from another planet land "Butterflies Are Free" (Part 2) (1972) GoldieHawn, Edward Albert Jr.
