Morris and Tigers starter Bill Gul-lickson were in trouble from the start. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the second. Kirk Gibson led off the inning with a line double to right-center and took third on a wild pitch one out later. After Junior Felix walked and stole second (his first of the season), Milt Cuyler knocked in one run with a single to center and Chris Gomez hit an RBI grounder. The Indians came back with two runs both unearned off Gullick-son in the second to tie the game and then took the lead, 3-2, on Kenny Lofton's leadoff homer in the third.

The Tigers tied it in the fourth, with Cuyler again playing a key part. With two out, Felix lined a single to left and made it 3-3 on Cuyler's RBI double. Gullickson walked only 1.9 batters per nine innings (third-best in the American League) entering Tuesday's game. But he walked two in the fourth, and both scored. With one out, Manny Ramirez walked and scored on a double to right by Paul Sorrento.

After a walk to Sandy Alomar and a forceout, Lofton's two-run double made it 6-3. Morris was three outs from putting himself in position to qualify for his 11th victory when his control deserted him in the fifth. He faced five batters in the inning, walking four and surrendering a single to the other before leaving in favor of Jose Mesa. The Tigers continued the rally against the right-hander, with Tettleton, Felix and Cuyler all knocking in runs to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead. But the Tribe took the lead again an inning later when Jim Thome and Ramirez hit back-to-back homers off Mike Gardiner.

by Gene Guidi Free Press Sports Writer Cleveland it was like old times at new Jacobs Field on Tuesday night. The Indians kicked away a game they had won, and the home folks were in a booing mood. The Tigers won their first game at the Tribe's new home with a big assist from second baseman Carlos Baerga. Baerga threw away a cinch double-play ball in the ninth inning that sent the Tigers to a five-run rally and a 12-9 victory. "You won't see their team do that too many times this season," manager Sparky Anderson said.

"I wonder if ESPN will know what to do about us winning a game here?" The Tigers, losers of their first four games at Jacobs Field, trailed, 9-7, entering the ninth. Tony Phillips led off the inning with a single off closer Jeff Russell (0-6). Lou Whitaker hit a perfect double-play ball to Baerga, but he threw the ball into leftfield. "I was bearing down on the shortstop, figuring I was going to have to break up a double play," Phillips said. "Then the ball is in the outfield.

I think the play might have been a little tougher than it seemed." Once the Indians opened the door, they couldn't close it. Mickey Tettle-ton's 16th homer capped the comeback. "It's a crazy game sometimes, isn't it?" Tettleton said. "You see a tailor-made, double-play ball going to the second baseman, and you figure that's it, and the next thing you know the ball is down the leftfield line and your team has a life." Greg Cadaret (1-1) got his first Tigers victory, and Buddy Groom got his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth. The Tigers had rallied from a 6-3 deficit with four fifth-inning runs off Miscwd in final D.Wright World Championship FIRST ROUND POOL A (at Hamiton, Cut) Thursday1! osmes United Slates vs.

Cuyler's complaints triggered a closed-door clubhouse meeting called by Anderson. Cuyler looked like a goner when the Tigers acquired Eric Davis toward the end of last season and then signed him for $3 million to play center in 1994. But Davis' brittle body severely limited his contributions in 1994 and will make him a former Tiger after this season. Danny Bautista played some center when Davis went down, but the rookie seems better suited to rightfield than center. Kirk Gibson was pressed into duty in center for the second straight summer, but he's more effective as a designated hitter.

Cuyler returned from the disabled list last week and began playing with the same enthusiasm he showed as a rookie. He has speed on a team almost totally devoid of quickness, and his modest salary appeals to a club looking to cut into a $42 million payroll. HERE AND THERE: There's a new primer out for the fledgling baseball fan called "Why they Scratch Themselves: How to Understand Baseball." It's authored by John Hood and available through Forward Press for $9.95 plus $3.50 shipping. Call 1-800-35BOOKS for more information Cubs announcer Harry Caray probably will make only one more three-day trip this season as he recovers from a heat-induced fall in Florida in June. Don Mattingly says of the first-place Yankees: "I like the fact that we can do a little bit of everything we pitch pretty well, we hit pretty well, we're pretty good defensively and we're pretty deep." The average major league salary has risen from $51,500 in 1976 to $1.19 million.

JUST ASKING: Isn't a salary-cap proposal a little too arrogant, even for a bunch of egomaniacs like the owners? And while we're on the subject of salary caps, guys, how about a cap on the price of tickets and hot dogs? Would you know Jeff Bagwell if you saw him on the street? Anyone argue with Jose Canseco for comeback player of the year? Don't columns on what baseball fans can do to survive a strike tend to trigger your gag reflex? Has there ever been more speculation on pparky's future with the Tigers? NY ISLANDERS: Agreed to terms with forwards Andy Brickley and Kip Miller, defensemen Gord Dlneen and Milan Tlchy and goalie Frank Pietrangelo. "The young man will never have a better chance," Anderson said. "You look around and ask yourself: who else is there? I sure don't see anybody." The job used to belong to Cuyler, who in 1991 was voted to the Topps All-Rookie Team. That was the season Cuyler had 411 putouts, third-highest among American League outfielders, and stole 41 bases, the most by a Tigers rookie in 82 years. But after that fine start, Cuyler faded into the background, suffering injuries that were slow to heal and which ended his season prematurely in 1992 and 1993. Anderson, tired of waiting for Cuyler to regain his form, didn't hide the fact that he wanted to trade his outfielder to San Diego for Darrin Jackson in the spring of 1993.

Tr deal never happened, mostly because the Padres were scared by Cuyler's lingering knee problem that prevented him from running at top speed. Then there was the incident last summer when Cuyler publicly criticized the Tigers' attitude toward his Sic 3YO UP, 71 Imah 1)7 Little Annie 117 Msd The Slor 119 Edcaled Risk 119 Loltsa Talc 117 Personal Bid 117 Nvmber Snow 122 vlh-lOMIOO-edd, 3YO, 1 l-ltrritf.
