Michael Todd's Michael Todd TOUR GIRLS IN TOWN" I rZii I "FOUR GIRLS IN TOWN Universal International has been consistently successful with the filming of science-fiction horror stories of unusual or off-beat interest. Jack Arnold, who directed U-I's big "sleeper" picture "The Creature from the Black Lagoon," was also the director of the studio's latest release, "The Incredible Shrinking Man," at the Palms Theater.

It doesn't matter that the cast has no "name" players. The strange story and the special effects, are the thing. I rff Prrsa Musie Oritie A new sonata for violin and piano was presented Wednesday night at the Detroit Institute of United Artists wo. 2.7ml THEATRE DOORS OPfcN A. M.

'To a man who can live in a UNFORGCmBLE' Richard Matheson, the central character, Scott Carey (Grant Williams), is finally comforted by the realization that every Arts under sponsorship of the Music Study Club. The composition, by Julius Chajes, had the composer at the piano, with Mischa Mischakoff as violinist.

This sonata may bear just claim to the designation of masterpiece. It is beautiful in conception and most effective in its realization. CHAJES AS. To an inch-high man, a spider is a mortal enemy. THE MYSTERY in the story is typically up-to-date. Carey and his wife Louise (Randy Stuart) are lazing on the deck of a cabin cruiser one sunny afternoon. Louise has gone below when a great cloud suddenly sweeps across the water, enveloping Carey After it has passed, his chest 'is covered with glittering particles. Within six months he discovers that he is not only losing weight, but losing height.

THE BEST medical research brains concentrate on his case. But they can find no way to retard the shrinking effect of what is to be taken as atomic fallout. It is obvious that as Carey grows smaller and smaller, the studio technicians had their work cut out for them. As Carey shrinks, the furniture of his home has to look larger. When he becomes so tiny that he is living in a dU's house, a disaster dumps him into the basement He is given up for dead and his wife prepares to move away.

Louise is unaware of the dramatic struggle for survival going on in the cellar. THAT IS how and where proportion becomes most vivid. A common pin assumes the proportion of a sword. Another pin is bent into a grappling hook with thread for a line strong enough to enable the little creature to scale an ordinary crate. Everything is highly imaginative, with appeal to the spectator's imagination and to pity.

The ending is necessarily unresolved, though worked out with reasoning. I'm just afraid that after he gets out of the cellar one of the birds will pick him up, mistaking him for a grub. 1 1 ttijgJ FORT LARAMIE THE COMEDY TEAM OF THE YEAR from in ami TECHMCOIOR BOB HOPE- Katharine HEPBURN rnmmm tf vj BY EARL WILSON NEW YORK Sexy Rexy Harrison will marry British actress Kay Kendall during the summer here in Hollywood and his ex-wife, Lilli Palmer, will wed Carlos Thompson "somewhere in Europe." ff2f 7 'THE 'A lot of pianist has proven himself a master of the classical expres- i sion, and something of this I quality reveals itself in the sonata. It is a shapely work in its broad outline, with imaginative detail and breadth of expression. There has been no new piece of music in recent time that can surpass the slow movement for dignity and color. It Is subtitled "Mourner's Prayer" and carries the spirit of grief within it. It is not, though, a burden of sorrow that emerges, but a contem- plation of a sad event.

The muted violin, against a 1 bell-like tolling of the piano, is enormously effective. There is humor in the scherzo and a blaze i of bravura brilliance in the finale. It is altogether a most estimable addition to the sonata repertory. The Chajes work was presented with the Beethoven "Spring" sonata and the Brahms in minor, opus 108. The classical clarity of the Beethoven and the more romantic air of the Brahms provided the right contrasts for a well-balanced program.
