It appeared he might have pulled a hamstring running out a ground ball, but trainer Pio DiSalvo said he thought the injury was only a cramp or spasm and drew Anderson's praise. "I don't know how you could come to the ball park and see two guys throwing the ball any harder," he declared.

Berenguer and James are out of options, and there are strong indications they'll be kept on the roster No. 24 in a series. 1982 finish: 94-68, second place, one game behind Milwaukee. Who'i new: Manager Joe Altobelli steps into a long cast by Earl Weaver. Under Weaver, the O's finished lower than second place only twice in 15 winning six division titles, four pennants and one World Series.

Rookie Leo i iU jl ill aim 1 I Illustration by Free Press Art Director DICK MAYER By BRIAN BRAGG Free Press Sports Writer LAKELAND, Fla. Sparky Anderson and Kirk Gibson had a private discussion Thursday about the manager's decision to make Chet Lemon the Tigers' regular center fielder in the first weeks of the season. The talk didn't change anything, but it did clear the air. Gibson had heard of Anderson's preference for Lemon before being directly informed, and Anderson admitted he made a mistake in not telling Gibson before informing the news media. "I should have told him a week ago," said the manager.

"I told him I made a mistake, but what can I do now? It's over, and there's nothing I can do about it." Gibson, who returned to action Thursday after a week on the sidelines with an injured left collarbone, was originally in Anderson's plans to platoon in center, but he'll start the season as a designated hitter against right-handed pitching. LEMON STARRED in center field for the Chicago White Sox for six seasons before moving to right field in his first year with the Tigers last season. Because the Tigers will face left-handed pitchers frequently in the early weeks of the season, Lemon would have been the center fielder in any event even without Anderson's apparent abandonment of a platoon scheme. Gibson accepted the manager's decision without anger. "That's the way it is," he said.

"I'm going to be a DH. I don't like it, but there isn't anything I can do about it. "I'll just have to wait until I get my chance. I don't like sitting down nobody does But I'll get my chance." Anderson said he understands Gibson's feelings: "I wouldn't have anybody in my clubhouse who wasn't upset about not playing." B. F.

And will rookie of the year Cal Ripken (.264, 28, 93) encounter a sophomore slump, and will right fielder Dan. Ford go into a trance, as he did last year? Key players: Lefty reliever Tippy Martinez, 33, worked in 76 games last year as the Birds nearly pulled off a miracle finish. Righty reliever Tim Stoddard added 12 saves to Martinez's 16 despite missing the first and last months of the season with arm and knee problems.

Probable 1983 finish: Altobelli inherits enough talent to win it all. If the Birds don't finish first this year, they'll be close. Seaver was supposed to throw 100 pitches before the Mets' exhibition game against Montreal, but he quit after throwing 50. "I don't know whether it's stiffness, pain or fatigue, but the leg still bothers me," Seaver said. "I just didn't want to take any chances."
