2B DETROIT FREE PRESS MONDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1993 Post Office elves sift Santa wish lists 2l teas The Detroit Police Department is seeking help from citizens in locating these fugitives. Each week the Free Press profiles at-large suspects. The Detroit Police Repeat Offenders Program compiled this list. The St. Louis Circuit Court jury awarded $750,000 in actual damages and $78 million in punitive damages to Jean Kinder, 49. Domino's spokesman Tim Mclntyre said Saturday the company is confident Friday's judgment will be reversed.

At issue in the trial was Domino's guarantee to deliver in 30 minutes or less. In May, the Ann Arbor-based chain paid $2.8 million to settle a similar suit. Age: 20 Height: 5 feet 10 Weight: .165 Charged with: Assault with intent to commit murder and using a BY JOE ROSSITER Free Press Special Writer Santa's helpers at the North Pole have nothing on the ones in Detroit when it comes to providing needy children and families with the merriest Christmas possible. Shirley Clark, coordinator of the Santa's Helper Program at the main Detroit Post Office, and a handful of assistants have been busily reading and sorting through mounds of letters addressed to Santa from children, hoping to fulfill their Christmas wish lists. "This is what Christmas is all about, the sharing, caring and love.

The fact that the Post Office has allowed me to do this is my Christmas," said the Detroit mother of two. "My son told me that this is my calling. This is what I was meant to do." This is the third year that Clark, a postal employee for 27 years, has been in charge of the program and she expects to receive up to 2,000 Santa letters this season. Every letter is read. The ones with return addresses are set aside and a cheerful form letter is returned.

For the truly needy, Clark does her best to match the family with an individual, club or business group that has volunteered to pitch in. Requests run the gamut from greedily extravagant to starkly realistic. Many are simple, like the one from the little girl who wants a puppy "because I can hug and kiss him a lot." murder and using a firearm during a felony. "Sometimes I can feel myself choking back tears," said Clark. "These people are crying out for help. Then you get funny letters.

The kids tell Santa they'll leave milk and cookies for him or they just want to check on his health." Clark plans to make sure no one is forgotten. "Can you imagine waking up on Christmas morning with all the presents and decorations and imagining tnat some kids won't have anything? I just wish I could fly over Detroit and make sure every child has a Christmas." To sponsor a family or ch ild contact Clark at 225-5433, firearm during a felony. On Nov. 9, 1990, shortly after noon, Siriani got into a fight with a 20-year-old man at a concert and critically shot him. Anyone with information about these individuals is asked to call Detroit Police at 1-800-752-1241 pnytime.

A boy named Chip writes, "I know that there are many children who lost toys in the fires and floods so I'm not' going to ask for much this year just two presents." One poignant letter from a welfare mother of four says: "After I pay rent and bills there's no money left. I would appreciate any help for the kids." Not all the children ask for gifts. Many are content to just send along their festive artwork for Santa's enjoyment. One youngster even enclosed 15 cents to help defray expenses. Another enterprising Little girl clipped countless pictures from a toy catalog and mailed them in, leaving no doubt in Santa's mind as to what she wanted for Christmas.

"They were ordered out of bed at the crack of dawn, and they started the day with a shot of cognac on an empty stomach." The elder Mr.

Rohr was born in Moline, 111., and grew up in Pontiac. He interrupted studies at the University of Michigan to enlist in the Army Air Forces. German ground troops often shot at his supply plane. "One day with a little time off, my dad and his copilot were just running around the countryside and they came across a destroyed enemy armored vehicle," his son said. "They extracted some of the armor plating and welded it to the bottom of the pilot and copilot's seats on their C47." They named their plane the "Flying Skillet." Over German territory, Van Rohr said, "The airplane was hit with quite a bit of shrapnel, and one piece came roaring right through the floor and hit his seat and put a big ding in the armored plating." Gen.

George Patton later gave Mr. Rohr a pistol, Van Rohr said, as "a special thanks for the dangerous flying." After the war, Mr. Rohr finished his journalism degree at U-M and was a police reporter in Pontiac before moving back to Moline to be near his mother. In 1950, while working as a reporter-photographer on the Moline Daily Dispatch, he met a City Hall clerk, Katherine VanLarcke, whom he married in 1951. At the time, Mr.

Rohr was paid $35 a week. "He got out of journalism because it didn't pay any money," his wife said. Mr. Rohr was a sales representative for Addressograph-Multigraph from 1955 until he retired in 1981. In addition to his wife and son, Mr.
