43 DETROIT FREE PRESS' TUESDAY, JUNE 28. 1994 mm 2 rt 3 Pled es near 82 billion, sweeten zone bid Soccer field needs place put dom new roots Youth robbed of shoes, Bible KTROIT Two 3 rr rr 3 rr teenagers robbed a 16-; 1 year-old youth of his shoes, his identification nually for three years to install high-efficiency natural gas furnaces in the zone. The only criticism Monday was directed toward Detroit Edison and Ameritech, which Robinson said pledged services and in-kind contributions but no cash. "I'd like to know why the two largest utilities serving this area have not committed money," said Council-woman Kay Everett. Detroit Edison spokesman S.

Martin Taylor said the company already NEIGHBORHOODS, from Page North Assembly Plant and hire 10 to 15 percent of new workers from the zone, and by Ford to give $8 million to the Detroit Renaissance Development Fund. Commitments of $5.8 million from community groups, $21 million from community service organizations and $11 million from foundations. Pledges by Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. to create 150-200 jobs for zone residents and give $750,000 an provides substantial financial help in the zone and other poor communities through such programs as the Detroit Edison Foundation. He said the company neglected to point that out in its pledge letter due to internal miscorn-munication.

Ameritech spokesman Phil Jones acknowledged the company has made no cash commitment, but added that it has spent $1.7 billion on a fiber optics network in Wayne County that will allow businesses within the zone to take advantage of the latest communications technology. and his Bible, police said By amber Arellano ae Press Staff Writer Where in the Detroit area can you plant a $2-million grass soccer field? No one knows. Today, the last of four World Cup Sanies will be played at the Silver-ilonie. After that, the history-making Kentucky bluegrass grown especially for the indoor stadium has to go. World Cup officials said Monday they would like to donate the 90,000 square feet of sod to Pontiac or De-tioit.

But finding a place to transplant the cjitire field of soccer dreams, and siting it there, has been tough. Offi-uils have until Friday to find a place, just in time to clean up for a July 5 i invention of 50,000 Jehovah's Wit-trsses. "We're looking for an angel to Move it," said Jim Duggan, executive director for the Michigan World Cup Host Committee. "If we can't find someone, we've got about 12 individuals or businesses who want to buy it." Starting Wednesday, a Pontiac firm wJl donate its labor to cut, roll and load the sod onto trucks. Landscaping companies are being sought to donate the $5,000 in labor needed to move and reinstall the grass.

Pontiac wants the grass, but officials don't think they'll have a large enough patch of land to plant it by Friday. Detroit officials have the land on Belle Isle, but don't have the staff or money to move the sod there. Whoever pays to move it can decide where it goes, Duggan said. The grass made worldwide headlines as the first grown for an indoor stadium. Michigan State University researchers worked more than two years on the grass, and local corporations and state grants paid for it.

If it is sold, it will cost 7 cents a square foot, the market price for regular grass. "If we sell it individually, I'm going to buy some," says Duggan, a Far-mington Hills home lawn's not good. But I'd love to have some World Cup grass in my front yard." To help move the sod, call the Michigan World Cup Host Committee fit 1-810-456-1994, 94:30 weekdays. Elsewhere Search for missing sailor in Lake Huron is given up GODERICH, Ontario Canadian and U.S. rescue teams gave up Monday night after two intensive days of searching Lake Huron for a 60-year-old Detroit man whose sailboat washed ashore in Ontario on Saturday.

"She combined a great sense of what consumers wanted to know about new homes with a strong understanding of the commercial real estate market. And she loved to be first with a story." She died of liver cancer Friday at home in Largo, where she moved in 1986. Miss Weddell, 65, was born in New Castle, and attended Indiana University.

She started work at WIBC Radio in Indianapolis. She moved to Detroit in 1953 to work for the W.B. Doner advertising agency, where she handled radio and television accounts. After nine years, she left Doner to learn the print media while working at smaller agencies. She developed an interest in real estate while handling several builders' and developers' accounts.

"When we lived in Huntington Woods, she redid my whole backyard and made it absolutely gorgeous," said Theda Rodman, a friend with whom Miss Weddell shared a home for many years. Miss Weddell was a soft-spoken woman who loved books and cats and particularly enjoyed a series of cat-centered mysteries written by a friend and former Free Press writer. "She recently wrote a letter telling Lilian Jackson Braun how much we enjoyed her cat books, but it's still on her desk," said Rodman. No services are planned. Sterling Hts.
