DETROIT FREE PRESSTHURSDAY, FEB. 1 1, 1982 3F Swami's top 10 games Open season on preps League race may be over, but Saginaw is aiming higher Today Saginaw vs. Flint Central, Flint's IMA Sports Arena, 8 p.m. Friday Ht F.lick 11 HcCabc Silf props Detroit Southwestern vs. Detroit Cooley, Calihan Hall, 6 p.m.

Lansing Eastern at Grand Ledge, 8 p.m. Detroit Catholic Central at DeLaSalle Collegiate, 7:45 p.m. Battle Creek Lakeview at Portage Northern, 7:50 p.m. Sterling Heights at Utica Ford, 8:10 p.m. Ann Arbor Huron at Jackson Parkside, 8 p.m.

Southfield at Birmingham Seaholm, 8 p.m. Benton Harbor at Muskegon Mona Shores, 7:45 p.m. Waterford Township at Livonia Stevenson, 7:45 p.m. (Probable winners in bold.) By HAL SCHRAM Free Press Sports Writer Saginaw High, which has lost three games this season, is virtually out of the Saginaw Valley League race. But of course the big goal a state Class A championship is still a March possibility.

"I don't know whether we'll reach it or not," coach Charles Coles said Wednesday as he readied his 12-3 Trojans for tonight's showdown with Flint Central at Flint's IMA Sports Arena. "But that's always been our goal, and we just may have the talent to get the job done. "Despite the three losses all in Saginaw I've never lost confidence in these young men. They're trying very, very hard, and by March we should have a fine club." Before Wednesday's practice, Saginaw's star guard, Russell Brown, underwent treatment for a groin injury. "We're trying to get him ready for the Flint Central game," Coles said, "but we'll wait until just before game time to decide whether he'll play." Louis Rainge, a 6-foot-8 center, and Kevin McAdoo, a six-foot point guard both of whom transferred last fall from Pontiac Central to Saginaw have fit well into the Trojan starting quintet.

Andre Jackson, Anthony Johnson and Brown are Saginaw's other usual starters. ONE OF THE TROJANS' three losses came at the hands of arch-rival Saginaw Arthur Hill. It was the first time in 10 years that the Lumberjacks had beaten Saginaw High in basketball. "Give Arthur Hill all the credit," says Coles. "They're a lot better than anybody gives them credit for being, and anyone who beats them has to play very hard.

They had that one coming to them. You just don't go on beating any school forever." The Public School League launches its post-season playoffs with double-headers at Calihan Hall tonight and Friday night. In Friday's feature, Southwestern, with scoring leader Antoine Joubert, will attempt to eliminate favored Northwestern. In other key games Friday around the state, No. 2-ranked Lansing Eastern invades Grand Ledge, Benton Harbor goes to Muskegon Mona Shores and Battle Creek Lakeview must win at Portage Northern if it hopes to stay in the Big '8' Conference race.

1 IBCD riPUTI Detroit Professional OUrEn Nun I Boxing Club presents FEBRUARY 12, 1982 8:30 p.m. at the STATE FAIR COMMUNITY i The University of Michigan once again landed some of the best high school football prospects in the country as players began signing national letters of intent Wednesday. U-M's catches include Ivan Hicks of Pensauken, N.J., younger brother of former U-M great Dwight Hicks, and Tony Gant of Fremont, Ohio. Both have been rated by scouting services as two of the 10 best defensive backs in the country. Michigan also may have ended the place-kicking troubles that plagued the Wolverines the past three seasons with the signing of Pat Moons of Ft.

Lauderdale, considered one of the two best prep kickers in the nation. Although U-M lost Birmingham Brother Rice quarterback Dave Yarema to Michigan State, the Wolverines did land QB prospect Jim Harbaugh of Palo Alto, Calif. He is the son of former U-M assistant Jack Harbaugh, Western Michigan's new head coach. MICHIGAN STATE appeared headed for a good recruiting year earlier this week, but by Wednesday the Spartans had lost out on some key national players. A top prospect already enrolled at MSU is Brian Phelps, a transfer from Ventura (Calif.) College who completed 108 of 238 passes for 1,471 yards, eight touchdowns and 13 interceptions this seas-son.

In his two years at Ventura, he led the school to a pair of bowl games. But the MSU staff didn't want to talk about Phelps. "We won't release (announce) him until we finish recruiting quarterbacks," MSU head coach Muddy Waters said. One player Waters would talk about was Preston Gray, a Parade Magazine All-American who caught 49 passes for 800 yards. "From what I understand, he's as good as they come," Waters said.

Because MSU already has 67 players on scholarship, the Spartans are allowed to bring in only 18 more. And the rest of the MSU group is not nearly in the same class as Michigan's. Central Michigan landed two state players recruited by MSU quarterback Ron Fillmore of Sanford Meridian and fullback Jeff Whiteside of Trenton. Both were potential Big Ten players who decided on the Mid-American Conference. But the CMU group goes much deeper than Fillmore and Whiteside, and could be the finest class in the MAC.
