Actor Does Good Job Princess Glory Uses 3 Voices Singer in Night Club i V'. 1 The telling of this story is helped immeasurably by the performance of Harry Baur as Grigoryi Efimovich Rasputin. The paradoxical qualities of the man are projected withamazing skill, and every transition is set forth as clearly mentally as it is physically. In the matter of make-up, this Rasputin is an arresting object, Just as his conduct provides a fascinating study.

There are other excellent characterizations. But somehow they never seem to get very far Into the foreground when pitted against the compelling acting of Baur, who, more than anyone else, makes Rasputin" what it Is. Shaw The mystery of the Russian monk who stood so close to the czarist throne in the last days of that dynasty is not cleared up appreciably by "Rasputin." "However, this does not detract from the interest exerted by the French film at the Cinema. There is no apparent attempt on the part of Alfred Neuman, the au thor, or Director Marcel L'Herbier to explain anything. They have contented themselves with holding up to view externals in the career of this strange lndt vidual without seeking to establish whether he possessed divine power or waa just a charlatan.

Portrait Is Presented The result Is a portrait of a man who professed to perform physical miracles, with a leering implication of methods that would hardly get by in Hollywood. It pictures a man who counseled sin in its broadest forms as making repentance easier; who caroused wildly while he ministered to the needy; who defied church dignitaries when they cried out against his inroads on their constituency, and who caused political bigwigs to stand by im potently while he dictated affairs of state and wormed himself into the good graces of the Czarina. Othman HOLLYWOOD, Dec.

25 (U.P.) Today we have Mr. Henry Spitz, the assistant motion-picture director, taking the part of a Hon with a splinter in its paw When we walked Into the center of darkest Africa on Universal Studio's back lot, a group of natives and a couple of intrepid explorers were holding Mr. Spitz on the ground with ropes and bamboo poles. Mr. Spitz growled and struggled.

He was playing angry, as would any other lion with a sliver of wood in his foot. Star Removes Splinter The struggle between Mr. Spitz and his captors continued until Miss Lola Lane, beautiful in riding breeches and a shirt waist, approached and with a shiny pair of pliers removed the splinter from Mr. Spitz? In production was "Rigadoon," a melodrama of the dark continent, and Mr. Spitz merely was functioning as usual.

Yesterday, in fact, he was an alligator. Mr. Spitz put a lot of oomph In his lionesque struggle, but, unfor tunately for the customers, his dramatics never will be seen on the screen. It Just Can't Be Done It obviously is impossible to pull splinters from real lions. The humane society would object.

'So would the lions. Yet it is neces sary to show the natives struggling with something which can't be seen, and which is presumably a lion. That explains Mr. Spitz' function. He provides the struggle, the splinter, and the lion il lusion, by remaining out of camera focus.

All this sounds like the whole picture may be a fake and we hasten to correct that impression. There are lions, tigers and leopards all over the back lot, with Mme. Olga Celeste, the ani mal trainer, and her assistants with revolvers on their hips to keep th -n under control. Yesterday Miss Lane was struggling with a real lion, three months old, and it sank its teeth into her shoulder. That ruined the take.

It didn't do Miss Lane any good either. Director Harold Schuster ordered Mme. Olga to produce a biteless lion today. She did. Toothless and Milk-Fed It was six weeks old, almost white, about the size of an alley cat, and toothless.

Mme. Olga fed it warmed milk from a bottle with a nipple on it. She said she thought Miss Lane could handle it all right without getting hurt. This made Miss Lane angry. She said she wasn't going to act with any milk-fed lion.

She said she wanted the real thing and she assured Schuster that if he'd let MOTION PICTl KK ATTRACTION'S Reserved Seals now for Detroit's Biggest New Yeir's Evi Midnight Frolic. Such as the fact that Princes Glory iji "Gulliver's Travels' has hot one bit three voices. Iter dpeaking voice wrts done by Lovey a Miami nipht-club singer, who also provided the physical proportions from which the screen figure was drawn. Jessica Dragonette provided Princess Glory's singing voice.

And Marjorie Hines, film comedienne whose voice doubles for Olive Oyl tn the "Pnpeye" cartoons, provided Glory's sobs. Speeded Cp SO ret. Voice manipulation has no little to do with Gabby, the town crier, stealing of the same full-length cartoon. In this case Pinto ColviR, Hollywood's Man of a Thousand spoke for Gabby. However, after the recordings were made they were speeded up SO per cent faster than he naa talked to give the screen character unearthly intensity and pitch.

It was quite a job synchronizing the movements of the cartoon figure's lips with this hopped-up dialog. Cartoons take us to that grand "Peace on Earth" cartoon, with Its satiric bite, at the United Artists. Herein the little animals inherit the earth after warring mankind has been blotted out. It is beautifully done, and you might like to know that, ignoring major pictures. Parent's Magazine gave the cartoon its national award for 1939.

Drinking-Bout Scene With all that bloodshed In "Tower of London," continuing its run at the Adams, we forget to mention one performance which should flag plenty of attention. That's Vincent Price in that grand scene where, unable to meet Basil Rathbone with sword, he engages In a wine bout with him. His laughter, when he thinks he has won, will drive the chills down your back, and more when Rath-bone, unvanquished, raises his head and you know Price is doomed. You actually feel sorry for the guy when they tuck him in a wine vat to drown. As evidence that Robert Cum-Jiiing8, who flashed into the public consciousness with that swell work with Deanna Durbin in "Three Smart Girls Grow Up," has become a busy actor indeed, you might look at the Fox screen.

He is an exceeding important character, with Sonja Henie in "Everything Happens at Night" and in "Charley McCarthy, Detective." The annual poll of 12,273 movie exhibitors finds another juvenile In the No. 1 spot you've guessed it Mickey Rooney. Shirley, no longer as busy on the screen since she has begun to eprout up, has dropped to fifth place. Here is the order in which the theater exhibitors, who keep a firm eye on how the stars draw, rate the top 10 in pulling in the fans: 1 Mickey Rooney, 2 Tyrone Power.

8 Errol Flynn. 9 James Cagney, 10 Sonja Henie. Right behind these leaders are Bing Crosby and Jane Withers. r4'r4 I44 Movie Scrapbook MARIE WILSON Having attained stardom, Marie is still much the mystery girl she was when she first attracted the attention of Holly-woodians with, her odd antics. Dumb? Well, some of them seemed to be, but they were part of a well-laid plan that eventually bore fruit. Marie "put on the dog" in the best movie manner until a very substantial grubstake was dissipated and the bank brought her back to earth with a notification that her account was overdrawn. She tried to get Work as an extra, without very much success. When she did she upset her associates with her fantastic conduct, such as copying the names from one autograph book into another so they would be in alphabetical order.

The turn in luck came the day Marie stalled her car in front of a neighbor's driveway. A man came out, helped her push the car to a near-by garage, and paid for the gas. He was Nick Grinde, film direc tor, who gave her a bit part in one of his pictures that led to her selection for the part of Suslo in "Boy Meets Girl. That skyrocketed her to stardom, after two years of dis couraging effort. Let Moon Mullins, Free Tress comic erase jour frown today.
