IN A STRUGGLE that followed, Colby grabbed Adams' gun and shot him in the abdomen, witnesses said. Then, as the officer lay on the ground pleading for his life, Colby shot him twice more before speeding off, the witnesses said.

Passersby got Colby's license number, which led police to his home. Colby said at his trial he had argued shot Adams because "he pulled his gun and ordered me out of the car. He didn't treat me like a man." After the appeals court decision, the Wayne County Prosecutor's office decided not to try him again, and allowed him instead to plead guilty to the crime, with the understanding he would be sentenced to the prison time he'd already served. s. The Saving Place9 ALSO AVAILABLE AT a DeDepcr By SANDY McCLURE Free Press Start Writer A 41-year-old Detroit man, released from prison in July after serving more than 17 years for the murder of a Detroit police officer, stabbed his wife to death and then fatally stabbed himself, police said Wednesday.

-Neighbors called police about 11 p.m. Tuesday to an apartment in the 2600 block of Fisher. George Edward Colby and his wife, Wilhelmina, 40, Were found stabbed to death, lying in bed with their hands intertwined. A bloody butcher knife was in Colby's hand, police said. Earlier Tuesday, Colby had asked a neighbor to tell his son, Parrish, who is in the Army, that he had "killed his mama" and was going to kill himself, police said.

COLBY WAS RELEASED from prison July 17 after the state Court of Appeals overturned his murder conviction in the 1 963 shooting of Sgt. Sel wyn Adams, 46, a 20-year police veteran. He had served 17 years of a 19- to 55-year term for second-degree murder when the court overturned his conviction in October 1981. The court said it granted Colby a new trial because his original trial judge, then-Recorder's Court Judge Paul Krause, had not properly instructed the jury that malice must be demonstrated in first- or second-degree murder cases. Colby shot Adams three times with the officer's own revolver after Adams stopped him for speeding erratically along the Ford Freeway on a Saturday night, according to records.

Colby ap-parenty had just argued with his wife. Witnesses said Adams had his gun drawn as Colby got out of the car, but put it away after he saw Colby's son, Parrish, then an infant, strapped into IN STORE WAREHOUSE SALE ATI 4 DAYS 0NLY LiiT4 k( fl Every item in SM SAVE 20 TO 14-4 50 Famous names such as: CKROMCRAFT CAl-STYLE Fantastic $avlngs on all wood, chrome and brassglass dinette sets. Drunk driver sentenced PONTIAC A drunk driver who struck and killed a four-year-old girl with his truck was sentenced to 1 to 10 years in prison Wednesday by Oakland Circuit Judge Francis O'Brien. Prosecutor L. Brooks Patterson, who argued the case himself, blasted the verdict as too lenient. "We're sending the wrong message to drunk drivers," Patterson said.

Ronald Venticinque, 45, of Orton-ville, was convicted of manslaughter last Friday, after only 30 minutes of jury deliberations. Venticinque was driving in Ortonville on Sept. 18, 1981, when he struck Nicole Bien as she walked with her family. Patterson had asked for the maximum sentence of 10 to 15 years. "With 1 he'll be out in a halfway house in 45 days," Patterson said.

Sheriff hopefuls in court DETROIT Wayne County's two would-be sheriffs Loren Pittman and Robert Ficano were in court Wednesday, each arguing that he alone was entitled to the job. Circuit Judge Paul Teranes said he would issue an opinion soon. Ficano, the assistant county clerk, was appointed sheriff last December by a a 2-1 vote of a committee that has traditionally filled vacancies in elected county offices. County Executive William Lucas, who claims the new county charter transfers appointive authority to him, appointed Pittman, his under-sheriff, to succeed him as sheriff.
