First, he is a marvelous student.

The lowest grade he has received in high school was an A-minus, and there have only been three of those. Second, he has been a two-way, three-year starter at Escanaba High School, which is always a senior-dominated team. Third, Altobelli seems to have an inner strength that allows him to accomplish what seems physically impossible for a 5-foot-ll, 182-pound running back. THIS SEASON, Altobelli began the year at quarterback before being moved to tailback. Still, he managed to gain 1,160 yards and average nearly seven yards a carry.

Against Cheboygan, Altobelli ran for more than 300 yards, the finest individual performance of the season. He is the offensive captain of the 1982 Free Press All-State Team, which is recognized by the Michigan High School Coaches Association as the offical All-State team. "There must be a denial he has that people can't tackle him," said Escanaba coach Jerry Cvengros. "He absolutely refuses to go down. It's like he's saying: 'You can't tackle "I try not to go down," said Altobelli.

"I try to get every yard I can. Every yard is important. You have to believe you can do it. You have to believe in yourself whether it's football or school or whatever." ALTOBELLI IS TOPS in the classroom as well. He is No.

1 in his senior class of 366. "He doesn't show up to be a genius on the ACT test," said Cvengros. "There might be a dozen with higher ACT scores than Dean. But his parents say he budgets his time well so he can have a certain amount of time for his studies." Last year, Altobelli was one of the keys in Escanaba's Class A state championship. At the time, he said it was the dream of every boy in Escanaba to be able to wear an Eskymos uniform.

"There is great tradition here," he said this week. "You're expected to win. The thing that makes it special is our coaching staff. They care a lot. They care what kind of people you become and what you'll be after football.

They build a lot of character." The defensive captain of the All-State team is Pat Shurmur of Dearborn Divine Child, the best linebacker in the state this year. He has been thinking about this honor for three years. "When I was a freshman I went to an All-State banquet," he recalled. "When I was looking at everyone, I said: 'I'll be there coach Dick Sossion. "It's hard to define quickness I don't mean speed.

In one game Mark intercepted a batted ball and he ran 52 yards before a halfback caught him. He's got excellent quickness off the line and he's also a devastating downfield blocker. He just annihilated defensive halfbacks." St. Johns coach Joe Gonzales talks in superlatives when he refers to defensive end Tim Moore. "He's the best big man we've had in nine years," Gonzales said.

"He could get to the ball better than anyone. He always wanted to be around the ball all the time. He runs a 4.7 40, and that's good for his size (6-3, 210)." BOB MORSE was a do-everything back at Muskegon Catholic Central, the Class state champ. On a team with three exceptional running backs, Morse rushed for nearly 1,000 yards. He was also a tremendous defensive back.

At 5-foot-9, 178 pounds, Morse will probably never play big-time college football, but he was certainly an All-State performer. "He's just a terrific athlete," said Muskegon Catholic Central coach Pete Kutches. "Offensively, he has a great sense of balance. He can make the cut and he's got deceiving speed. On defense he's got a sense of where the ball's at.

He moves quickly and he goes to it. He's always making the big hit for us. That's Bob Morse." Once again, Farmington Harrison's Dave Blackmer was the best kicker in the state. He will probably be remembered by most fans for the winning field goal he kicked in last week's Class A state championship game. But Harrison coach John Herrington will remember a game in Blackmer's sophomore year.

"We were playing Walled Lake Central and the game went into overtime," Herrington said. "Three straight times they scored and Dave had to kick an extra point three straight times to force another overtime. Then in the fourth overtime, he had to kick a field goal to finally win the game. Ever since that game, he does not seem to worry about pressure." The 54th annual Free Press All-State Team, recognized by the Michigan High School Coaches Association as the state's official team, was selected by the Free Press Grid Board: Chuck Gordon of Westland John Glenn; Ross MacDonald of Fraser; Bill McLellan of Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port; Dave Cooke of North Muskegon; Jim Long of Kalamazoo Central and Ken Hofer of Menominee. This season, Shurmur was the force behind Divine Child's drive to the Class state playoffs.

"All things considered, I'm going to do whatever it takes to be the best," he said. "Ever, since I was young, my dad has been telling me you can do anything if you work hard. I try and apply that to everything I do. I don't mind working four and five hours a day, five days a week in the off season, if I can accomplish something I want to be the best." ONE OF the best offensive tackles in the state can be found at Lansing Waverly Jeff Stump. "A lot of colleges are looking at him with the idea of moving him to center or guard," said Waverly coach Ron Fandrick.

"When he gets out on a block he stays there. Defensively, he's got excellent mobility down the line of scrimmage." Lansing Eastern coach Gil Sauceda knew he was going to have to throw the ball more this year than in the past, but he had no idea quarterback Marcelle Carruthers would complete so many passes. Carruthers was good on 129 of 225 attempts for an astounding 1,642 yards and 13 touchdowns. "He's got a keen eye for finding the man that's open," said Sauceda. "We threw as many as 36 times a game, and Marcelle got to the point where he could look at the second and even the third receivers.

That's something you don't teach kids." Ray Holliman could have made the All-State team as either an offensive or defensive lineman. "I've been at it (coaching) 32 years," said Holland West Ottawa coach Roger Chiaverini, "and I've had five other All-State linemen. Ray's the best defensive lineman I've ever coached. He's got great range and makes the big play repeatedly. He has great awareness of where he is on the field." FLINT CENTRAL has been best known recently for its All-State basketball players.

This year, running back Ed Greer has taken over the spotlight. He averaged 5.1 yards a carry while gaining 1,078 yards on a team that didn't pass much. "Ed's got a combination of strength and power, plus he can cook it, too," said Central coach Joe Eufinger. "He got us two yards when we needed it and he also had touchdown runs of 80, 76 and 46 yards. If he had something, he could take it all the way.

If there was no blocking, he could put his shoulder down and bury you." i The only Class athlete on the overall first team is lineman Mark Cataldo of Kalamazoo Hackett, who was a two-way, two-year starter. "He is big and strong and quick," said Hackett The Free Press coach of the year is on Page 7E. The All-State honorable mention list is on the Scoreboard, Page 4E. i.
