GKK.KN BAY SCORING: Tourhdown! Towlon, Reane; Conversion Cona 2. Meld coal Kelrharrit. BY BOB LATSHAW Freo Preu Staff Writer GREEN BAY, Wis. After a four-week scoring famine, the Detroit lions fattened up on the Green Bay Packers Sunday afternoon. Detroit tied its all-time scoring mark by rolling up a 52-17 triumph, its third of the season, before 24,656 customers.

This was strictly a team victory. The defensive unit smashed the Packer running attack, recovering four fumbles, and the secondary picked off five Packer passes that killed off scoring chances. The Packers gained only 53 yards rushing. BOBBY LAYNE sparked the Lions' offensive crew with Jug Girard, playing before the old home folks, doing the major por tion of the work. Layne tossed three touchdown passes during the afternoon, with Girard catching twO of them.

All told, Girard picked up 130 of the Lions' 284 yards gained. He picked off four passes for 69 yards, Including two touchdown receptions. He also picked up 61 yards on 11 rushes, lugging the ball from scrimmage. The offensive platoon was the picture of efficiency. It needed only 29 plays to punch across five touchdowns.

The other two came on a 65-yard punt return by Jack Christiansen and a 46-yard return of an Intercepted pass by Bob Smith. The Lions scored the first two Turn to Page 35, Column 1 lowly New York Rangers, -f Unable to win a gam all season, New York finally plucked 3-2 triumph from the sagging D-troiters. .7 The Wings could draw only slim consolation from the fact that they weren't blanked or routed aa In the 9-0 blasting suffered Saturday in Montreal. OWNERS OF the weakest offense in the National League, the Rangers outshot Detroit, 40 to 25, and never trailed. Lanky Jack Stoddard set the pace with two goals, New York's first and third, both on rebound plays.

As a result the Wings, without a victory on the road in all five away games this season, closed a disastrous five-day trip. On the journey they blew a 5-4 verdict to Toronto, were subjected to the gross indignity at Montreal and then were outplayed here. 7 Even the presence of Manager' Jack Adams at rlnkslde after a hurried flight from Detroit failed to charm the Detroit team. U-M's Getting Well ILLINI NEXT TO All Agree, BY HAL MIDDLESWORTH Balance and versatility! That is what has carried Michigan to the top of the Big Ten standings and gives Wolverine fans hope for their fifth Conference title in six years.

Those valuable attributes of Coach Bennie Oosterbaan's steadily-improving Wolverines never were more clear than In 1 Lou Groza, Cleveland's crack place-kicker, booted four field goals as the Browns broke out of a three-way first-place tie with th New York Giants and Chicago Cardinals. The Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers gave the Browns big assists. .7, THE EAGLES upset the Giants, 11 to 10, and the Steelers surprised the Cardinals, 34 to 28, for their first victory In five starts. The Browns (4-1) now hold a one-game lead over the Giants. Eagles and Cardinals (each 3-2).

In another National Conference game, the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Chicago Bears, 31 to 7. Two touchdowns by Fullback Chuck Drazenovlch, both set up by the passing and running of Quarterback Eddie LeBaron, gave Washington a 13-6 lead at the half. But two second-half field goals by Groza plus Otto Graham's two-yard touchdown lunge enabled Cleveland to win before 32,496 home fans. Hugh McElhenny, Joe Perry and Don White made long touchdown runs as San Francisco waltzed to Its 13th straight victory over the last two seasons. McElhenny raced 83 yards and Perry 77 to score.

White's scoring run was only 29 yards, but he crissed-crossed the field twice to reach the goal line. ED BAWEL'S Bl-yard touchdown dash with a punt and Bob Thomason's 19-yard scoring pass to End Bob Walston proved all the points Philadelphia needed against New York. Ends Pete Pihos and Norm Willey and Guard Frank Kilroy led an Eagle defense which limited Fullback Ed Price, the 1951 ground-gaining champion, to a mere seven yards. Quarterback Jim Finks threw touchdown passes to Lynn Chandnols, Elble Nickel and George Sulima to lead Pittsburgh to its triumph over the Cardinals at Chicago. Card Quarterback Don Panciera threw three touchdown passes to OUis Matson in the last 16 minutes in a fine but futile rally.

TRAILING, 7 TO 3. going into the final period, the Rams reeled off 28 points to crush the Bears. Volney Quinlan, Moose Myers. Tom Fears and Ken Casner scored the Rams' last-period touchdowns. It was a sad day all around for the Bears, sevn-time NFL champions.

He has done a tremendous job, too, as the balance wheel in a backfield which embraces three first-year men. Game by game, the others came along. Ted Kress nailed down the left halfback job with a splendid performance against Michigan State and was the big wheel against Stanford, although the Wolverines lost both encounters. Against Indiana, Freshman Tony Branoff came tearing through to claim the right halfback job. In the Northwestern game, it was Dick Balzhlser who made the headlines and the backfield by filling a void at fullback.

So what happened against Minnesota? They all came through together with a balanced, hard-to-fathom, harder-to-stop running offense which toppled the Gophers from the unbeaten Conference list and kept the Little Brown Jug at Ann Arbor for the 10th year. The Wolverines' first touchdown, gained the first time they got the ball, illustrates their versatilitiy. Balzhiser carried four times, Kress once and Frankie Howell twice for a total of 37 yards in a 71-yard march. KRESS PASSED to Lowell Perry for 26 yards and to Topor for eight and there was the touchdown march all wrapped up. Balzhiser scored that one and another in the second quarter.

Topor added the third in the final period. Meanwhile, the Wolverines defensive heroes were giving Minnesota its first whitewashing in If games and Coach Wes Fesler his own first shutout since 1947, his first season at Ohio State. The aggressive Wolverine defenders pulled Paul Giel, Minnesota's wonder-boy halfback, down to an even 100 yards, both running and passing. Quarterback Don Swanson, eighth-high passer in the Conference, completed a single toss, the humming Wolverine machine, at Ann Arbor Saturday. Thrice-beaten, the lllini will be fresh from their 40-12 licking by Purdue, only unbeaten team In Conference play beside Michigan.

Illinois has won Its last two meetings with the Wolverines, but there's no optimism this time. Perhaps Scout Leo Johnson's comment after watching Michigan in three straight games is significant: "No one's going to beat that team. It gets better every week."
