DETROIT FREE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 1993 OBITUARIES Lewis led biggest black business Associated Press NEW YORK Reginald chairman of TLC Beatrice al Holdings, the nation's largest owned business, died Tuesday, after it was disclosed he had Lewis, Internationblack- one day cancer of the brain and was in a coma. He was 50. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage, the company said. Mr. Lewis, a philanthropist with a reputation as a tough businessman, was listed by Forbes magazine last year among the 400 richest Americans with a net worth estimated at $400 million.

He bought the McCall Pattern Co. in 1984 and sold it in 1987 at a substantial profit. The deal that propelled him to the top was his acquisition of the Beatrice International Food Co. for $985 million in 1987. He used his TLC Group, which stands for the Lewis Company, to make the leveraged buyout.

In 1991, TLC Beatrice had revenue of $1.54 billion and net income of $51.4 million. Forbes listed TLC Beatrice as the 74th largest privately-held company in the United States. Black Enterprise magazine lists TLC Beatrice, a food processing and distribution company, as the nation's biggest black-owned business. Last week, Mr. Lewis implemented a succession plan that put his brother, Jean Fugett at TLC Beatrice's helm.

Fugett had been vice chairman. Fugett, 41, who played for the Dallas Cowboys and was a reporter for the Washington Post, has been a member of TLC's board of directors and its management committee since TLC acquired Beatrice. Mr. Lewis donated millions to various institutions, including historically black colleges. His donations to Harvard University ranged from $10 the week after he graduated from its law school to $3 million last summer to fund an international law program, which will be housed in an international law center named after him.

The donation was the largest the law school had received from an individual in its 175-year history and the building is the university's first named after an African American. Mr. Lewis, a Baltimore native, is survived by his wife and two daughters. Funeral scheduled for young fire victims BY JEAN CALMEN Free Press Staff Writer Funeral services will be held Thursday for four small children who were killed Thursday in a house fire on Detroit's east side. Arson investigators are still probing the blaze.

Rondell Bassett, 4, and Joshua Dunn, 2, were dead on arrival at a hospital after the fire. Amelia Dunn, 5, died Friday and Ramone Bassett, 4, died Sunday. Fire Department spokesman Richard Milliner said speculation that de- Emilia Dunn, left, and Ramone Bassett Reginald Lewis Reginald Lewis fective wiring in the kitchen stove had been ruled out. Victim's family members declined interviews Thursday. Joshua and Amelia Dunn were the children of Naomi Bassett and Jerome Dunn.

Rondell and Ramon Bassett were the children of Naomi Bassett's daughter, Angela Bassett. Investigators say the fire started after Angela Bassett left the children alone briefly while she went to a neighbor's to call the University of Michigan Medical Center to check on the condition of her other child, 16- month-old Ramonta, who is suffering complications from a liver transplant. His condition was upgraded to fair Tuesday. Ramon Bassett also is survived by his father, Frederick Johnson. Rondell Bassett also is survived by his father, David Jefferson.

"The family remains in seclusion but is very grateful for all the cards, letters and donations they've received for the Bassett Baby Fund," said Elizabeth Wolf, a friend and administrator of the Autumn Woods Health Care Facility in Warren, where Naomi Bassett has worked years. The donations will pay for funeral expenses, she said. "Community response has been phenomenal we have people coming in off the street" as well as checks in the mail, particularly from "people who have had tragedy in their life," Wolf said. Donations can be made to the fund care of Autumn Woods Nursing Center, 29800 Hoover, Warren 48093. Or call 574-3444, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

Start your day the Free Press way Call 222-6500 MICHIGAN DATELINE Audits skipped at probed agency ANSING The House Fiscal Agency, under investigation for improper use of funds, apparently hasn't been audited since 1976, state Auditor General Thomas McTavish said Tuesday. McTavish said many of the state's 600 agencies and departments haven't been audited for many years because of limited manpower. He said the Fiscal Agency probably wasn't looked at because of its relatively small budget (about $3 million) and because it doesn't directly provide services to the public. McTavish is investigating allegations that the agency chief, John Morberg, spent more than $300,000 on unauthorized bonuses and legal fees last year. On Monday, McTavish seized agency records and took over its financial transactions.

Morberg and his deputy director, James Heckman, remain suspended without pay pending McTavish's investigation and a probe by Attorney General Frank Kelley.
